Man, I LOVE Yildiray’s work in pencil, ink, and marker!  His art is so dynamic, clean, and painterly!  Ronnie looks fantastic!  Don’t get me wrong, I love Steve Buccellato’s coloring too.  I’m just taking some time to appreciate Yildiray’s work.

Yildiray posted this piece to Twitter on Tuesday.  If you’re a user of social media, be sure to follow Yildiray Cinar on Twitter!

Happy Thanksgiving from FIRESTORM FAN!

Happy Thanksgiving to all the match-heads out there!  This year we have something extra-special to be thankful for… a brand new ongoing FIRESTORM series!  Hooray!

Below is a little Thanksgiving fun from the 2003 JSA/JLA Thanksgiving get-together in JSA #54.  This issue featured Ronnie when he was operating solo as Firestorm.

Firestorm and Doctor Fate together!  Two of my favorites!  And poor Ronnie, he never seems to say the right thing around women.

Another Yildiray Cinar Brightest Day Firestorm Sketch

Yildiray Cinar, current Fury of Firestorm artist, posted this sketch to Twitter back in October.  It’s a commission he did at the New York Comic-Con of the Brightest Day version of Firestorm.  It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?!?!

We’ve now seen a few Brightest Day Firestorm sketches by Yildiray Cinar.  You can check out other Brightest Day Firestorm artwork by Yildiray by clicking here, clicking here, or clicking here.  Awesome stuff!  Sort of makes me sad he never got a chance to draw a post-Brightest Day Firestorm comic.

New Ethan Van Sciver Firestorm Art

Over the weekend, Ethan Van Sciver posted to his Facebook this new Firestorm-related drawing. I’m guessing this is an upcoming cover, but can’t be sure.  The only comment Ethan gave was, “On no, Ronnie.”  Check it out below.

Ronnie Raymond Firestorm by Ethan Van Sciver

Wild drawing!  A few interesting things to notice…

  • Ronnie appears to be wearing his Firestorm costume, yet his head isn’t on fire and he doesn’t have the black eye liner.
  • The Firestorm-ish guy tormenting Ronnie looks a lot like one of the Firestorms we got a sneak peek of in issue #1.
  • I count three or four Firestorm-looking dudes tormenting Ronnie. From the parts we can see, each of them looks identical. Hmmm… nuclear powers… identical copies… Could this be The New 52 variation of Multiplex?  Probably not, but that would rock!

What are your thoughts?

Favorite Covers: Firestorm #19

I love the cover to Firestorm vol. III #19 by Matt Haley!  What makes this cover special is the beauty of deep space, the glow of Firestorm’s nuclear aura, and the breathtaking Donna Troy.  Wow!  It’s gorgeous!  This was an interesting time for Jason as he was wearing a costume very similar to the classic Firestorm.  Jamal Igle described it as an “interim costume”, between issues #13 and One Year Later.

Below you’ll find the uninhibited cover art.  Click the image to enlarge.

October Comic Sales Figures

DC Comics The New 52 once again ruled the comic sales charts in October 2011! For sales through Diamond Comic Distributors, DC Comics held the top six sales spots, and 17 of the top 20 spots. Way to go DC Comics!

Since this is a Firestorm blog, we should probably talk about The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #2. In October our favorite Nuclear Men occupied the 54th sales spot with 39,591 units sold. Of DC’s The New 52 issues, Fury of Firestorm landed as the 34th book in units sold. Also worth mentioning, in October the second printing of The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #1 sold 10,539 units. Not too shabby for a second printing!

Lets put this in perspective… last month Fury of Firestorm #1 (first printing) occupied the 46th sales spot with 43,200 units sold. Of DC’s The New 52 issues, Fury of Firestorm #1 landed as the 30th book in units sold. So we had some slippage from issues #1 to issue #2, which is completely normal. From issue #1 to issue #2, there was a drop of 3,609 units sold (8.4%). Honestly, that’s not a huge drop. By way of comparison, sales for the last Firestorm monthly series (2004) dropped from issue #1 to issue #2 by 23%. Also, units sold for issue #2 of the previous Firestorm series were less than the units sold for the current #2 issue.

Fury of Firestorm #2 still out-performed lots of other successful books such as: Wolverine, Daredevil, Invincible Iron Man, X-Men Legacy, Walking Dead, Captain America and Bucky, and many more. Also, just think how good these rankings would look if they included the digital sales! Overall, I still think Fury of Firestorm is performing well and should be considered a success! Below you’ll find the top 100 selling comics in October from The Comic Chronicles.

October 2011 Comic Sales according to The Comics Chronicles

Congratulations to DC Comics, Ethan Van Sciver, Gail Simone, Yildiray Cinar, the folks in DC Editorial and Marketing, and anyone else involved in making Fury of Firestorm #2 and the second month of The New 52 such a success!

MORE NEWS: More Rumors About Gail Leaving & Firestorm #6 Solicit

Alright match-heads, I know just yesterday I reported that Gail Simone was staying on the Firestorm book.  Well… another rumor has popped up that Gail is leaving Firestorm.  According to Bleeding Cool, Gail Simone will be leaving The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men in March.  That translates to issue #7.  As we saw yesterday, while talking specifically about issue #7 Ethan Van Sciver confirmed that Gail Simone is still co-writing Firestorm.  Since we haven’t heard anything about issue #8, I suppose it’s possible this particular rumor could be true.  However, I’m going to wait for confirmation from DC or Gail before I put any faith into this rumor.  I panicked a month ago when Bleeding Cool stated that Gail had “walked off the comic”.  Clearly that wasn’t true as she continued to script issues #6 and #7 after that rumor broke.  I’m okay with waiting for the truth this time around.  My thanks to match-heads Keith G. Baker and liquidcross for the heads-up about this rumor.

On a more positive note, the solicitation was released this week for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #6 scheduled for February!  Check out the solicitation and the gorgeous cover below!  Click the image to enlarge.

In the blink of an eye, Ronnie and Jason witness a horror so gruesome, the two young Firestorms will question their entire futures as Super Heroes. As if that wasn’t enough, Pozhar, the Russian Firestorm, shows the two boys exactly how dangerous their world has become.

DC Universe | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US

On Sale February 22, 2012

First, what an amazing cover by Ethan Van Sciver! This may be my favorite yet! The cover really conveys the enormity of whatever terrible situation Jason and Ronnie have found themselves in. Also, I love how the craters form the Firestorm symbol! So cool!

Second, did you read the solicitation verbiage? Did you notice… Pozhar?  Oh yeah!  It’s POZHAR!  That’s right, the alter-ego of Mikhail Arkadin (at least, in the previous continuity)!  For you newer readers, Mikhail Arkadin used to be a major part of the Firestorm matrix.  From 1987 through 1990, Firestorm was composed of Ronnie Raymond and Mikhail Arkadin (along with Professor Stein’s subconscious, but we didn’t know that at the time). Mikhail was a very active part of the “Blank Slate” era of Firestorm, and a passive part of the Elemental Firestorm era.  Personally, I consider Mikhail the forgotten hero of Firestorm.  He doesn’t come up often in Firestorm discussions nowadays.  Most people focus on Ronnie, Professor Stein, or Jason (myself included).  However, I gotta tell ya, Mikhail deserves to be lauded as a core Firestorm cast member.

Keep in mind, all of that was in the previous continuity.  In The New 52, Pozhar will obviously be different.  He might turn out to be a hero or a villain; or he might not even be Mikhail Arkadin.  Only time will tell.  I don’t know for a fact, but I suspect that was Pozhar on the cover of The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #4.

This solicitation has inspired me to put together a Mikhail Arkadin/Pozhar entry here at FIRESTORM FAN within the next few weeks.  In the meantime, click here for my thoughts on the “Blank Slate” Firestorm.  My thanks to match-head Brandon Leonard for the heads-up about this solicitation.

NEWS: Van Sciver, Simone, Cinar, Collections, and More!

Howdy Match-heads! It’s been a busy week for Firestorm news! Here is a quick recap of some Nuclear News…

  • Yildiray Cinar, current Firestorm artist, posted a rockin’ new teaser image promoting issue #3! This image is similar to the teaser images released prior to issue #1 and #2. Could this be the new villain called Helix? I love the circles in place of the pupil; looks a little reminiscent of the circles in the series logo! Click the image below to enlarge.

  • Ethan Van Sciver, current Firestorm co-plotter and cover artist, posted a message on his Facebook last week about The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #7. In the comments Ethan confirmed that Gail Simone, current co-plotter and scripter, will continue to write Firestorm. Some fans suspected that Gail would leave the book after issue #6. Now we know she’s hanging around a while longer! Hooray! See the screen shot below.

  • Ethan Van Sciver has been spending some time lately over on the DC Comics Message Board in the Firestorm forum. He created a thread allowing fans to directly ask him questions about the new Firestorm series. The thread is entitled, “FIRESTORM QUESTIONS FOR ETHAN VAN SCIVER! Ask here!” Even if you don’t have a question for Ethan, stop by the message board and check out what questions he’s answering. My thanks to match-head Keith Baker for the heads-up about this!
  • Firestorm was mentioned a couple times recently on DC Comics The Source blog:
    * First, DC announced their plans to collect The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #1-6 into a soft cover scheduled for release in September 2012! Click here for details. My thanks to match-head Ken Deemer for the heads-up about this collection!
    * Second was a post on The Source entitled, “3 Things you Didn’t Know About The Nuclear Men”.  Click here to read the post and check out the accompanying artwork below by Yildiray Cinar (click the image to enlarge)! Thanks to match-heads Eric Sellers and Ken Deemer (again) for the heads-up about this posting!
