As promised during the episode, here are Lee Novak’s hilarious custom lyrics for “Download It, Maybe”, sung to the tune of  “Call Me Maybe“:

I was never really a fan,
Of this guy, Aquaman
I never gave him a chance,
Until I found this show

Never collected his books,
Or gave him a second look
But now I think I’m hooked,
Because I heard this show

I did some lookin’ online,
At Rob’s Aquaman Shrine,
Wow, that Mera sure is fine,
I guess it’s “Ride the Wave” time!

Hey, there’s these two guys,
They’re entertaining,
And here’s their podcast,
Download it, maybe?

It’s hard to get through,
a boring work day,
Without Fire & Water,
Download it, maybe?

Hey, there’s these two guys,
They’re entertaining,
And here’s their podcast,
Download it, maybe?

And all the other blogs,
Just try to compete,
But here’s the podcast,
Download it, maybe?

I hit the net with a plan,
To search for “nuclear man”
It brought up Firestorm Fan,
And then I found this show

A place for fellow match heads,
To discuss comics we’ve read,
And cry that Martin Stein’s dead,
It’s all part of this show

Two guys merge into the same,
Firehawk sure is a hot dame
Although Slipknot is kinda lame,
It’s still cool to fan the flame!

Hey, there’s these two guys,

When a new show goes up,
It makes me so glad
It makes me so glad
It makes me so, so glad

Get Your Own Parody Comic Book Portrait!

Artist Billy Penn (Hot Shot & Mighty Girl, Savage Dragon) is currently running a special on Parody Comic Book Portraits! Click the advertisement below to enlarge.

Parody Comic Book Portraits by Billy Penn

For Father’s Day 2009, my wife commissioned Billy to draw a parody comic book cover featuring me. Billy created the brilliant homage to Flash #123 (Sept. 1961) you see in the upper left-hand corner of the ad above. For the complete story on that commission, check out the original post on ONCE UPON A GEEK.

Billy does amazing work and is super-nice! I highly recommend his parody comic book portraits, whether it’s for yourself or a friend!

Luke Daab’s DC Sillies

Darn that Luke Daab! He’s dastardly creative and keeps producing wonderful Firestorm pieces! Luke Daab is an artist, a writer, a musician and a puppeteer. Luke has created artwork for McDonald’s restaurants, Star Wars, DC Comics, Transformers and Kung Fu Panda! Today we’re looking at his recent “DC Sillies” of our favorite Nuclear Men!

You can view this first piece over on Luke’s deviantART page.

You can view this second piece also over on Luke’s deviantART page.

Alternatively, you can check out both great artworks on Luke’s Tumblr. In addition to the sites above, be sure to keep up with Luke on his website and through Twitter.

We’ve featured Luke’s fantastic artwork previously – check it out here and here. Also, a big thanks to Luke for being such a big supporter of THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST. If you enjoy Luke’s style, be sure to check out his Aquaman work as well over on The Aquaman Shrine – here, here, here, and here.

Firestorm Box Hero – Under Construction

It’s comic convention season, so that means it’s cosplay season too! One of our favorite cosplaying Match-heads is Allen Hansard! Allen was the very first Firestorm cosplayer we featured here at FIRESTORM FAN. Additionally, Allen organizes the massive cosplay photoshoots at DragonCon each year for the Superhero Costuming Forum. These photoshoots are legendary! You’ve got to see them to believe them!

One of the more interesting cosplaying phenomena in the past few years is the proliferation of “box heroes”. These are elaborate costumes made from flat packaging cardboard with squarish features (yes, squarish is a word — I had to Google it to be sure). That’s right, cardboard box superheroes! This year for DragonCon, Allen is constructing a Firestorm box hero! Check out the work in progress below…

To give you an idea what a completed box hero looks like, below you’ll find box hero versions of Spider-Man and Iron Man! For more on the Box Hero Corps, visit their Facebook page or their blog.

Spider-Man and Iron Man box heroes

Doesn’t that Firestorm box hero look amazing?!?!?! I can’t wait to see the final product at DragonCon this year. Firestorm’s hair presented some interesting challenges for the box engineers. Their flame design is really inventive! Allen and the people helping him were really thinking “outside the box” on this one. Y’know, other cosplayers just don’t “stack” up to Allen; they’re just “squares”. Okay, enough of my bad puns. I’ll “pack” it in.

Firestorm by Yildiray Cinar, age 14

Check out this sketch of the Elemental Firestorm by Yildiray Cinar (current artist on The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men)!

Yildiray Cinar drew Firestorm when he was 14 years old

A little confused? I can imagine. This sketch of the Elemental Firestorm was done by Yildiray Cinar way back in 1990 when he was only 14 years old! So this qualifies as his first Firestorm work!

Yildiray Cinar still loves the Elemental Firestorm design and has since done some amazing pieces featuring this incarnation of Firestorm.

Firestorm by George Perez – The Shapiro Collection

George Perez recently posted a phenomenal Firestorm sketch to his Facebook fan page. It’s part of a collection of JLA sketches. Here are the details as he explained on Facebook:

JLA: The Shapiro Collection
During the course of several conventions this year I’ve been commissioned by fan Ari Shapiro to create illustrations of the classic JLA (before the disbanding wherein the main characters were replaced by Vixen, Vibe, Steel and Gypsy, etc.) I finished the final commission at the Miami show so now’s the time to reveal them all on my Facebook page. While some have appeared here before, a few are making their Facebook debut. I hope you enjoy them as much as Ari seemed to.

Below is the gorgeous Firestorm sketch from this collection!

Firestorm by George Perez for the Shapiro Collection

Wow, what a drawing! George Perez draws one of the most recognizable Firestorms out there! After co-creator Al Milgrom’s run on Firestorm volume I, George Perez was essentially the next regular artist for Firestorm (first on the Firestorm back-up stories in Flash, then on Justice League of America). Check out all the fantastic sketches in, “JLA: the Shapiro Collection” by clicking here.

My thanks to Match-heads Keith G. Baker and Eric Sellers for the heads-up on this sketch!

Firestorm News from San Diego Comic-Con

Dan Jurgens, writer and penciller on The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men starting with issue #13 in October, appeared last Friday on a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. According to Newsarama, during the “DC Comics – The New 52″ panel Dan Jurgens said,

“We’re going to take Firestorm back to being one character again.”

“We’ll concentrate on Jason and Ronnie’s relationship and what it means for two people to share one body.”

Well, there you have it Match-heads! We suspected it from the solicitation artwork, but this confirms that Ronnie and Jason will act as one Firestorm going forward! Spread the word to classic Firestorm fans that haven’t been following the current series. Let’s get them to pick up the book starting with issues #0 and #13!

On a barely-related note… below you’ll find a panel from Booster Gold vol II #1 (Oct. 2007) written by Geoff Johns, with art by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund. Notice the top right-hand section of the chalkboard. And after that, notice that Rip Hunter’s white chalk draws black. Weird.

Booster Gold vol II #1 by Geoff Johns and Dan Jurgens

I find the panel above somewhat ironic. Geoff Johns wrote this Booster Gold comic, and later went on to write Firestorm in Brightest Day (with Ronnie & Jason together as a single Firestorm). Norm Rapmund helped ink several issues of The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men (with Ronnie and Jason as independent Firestorms). Finally, Dan Jurgens did the layouts for this panel, and now he’s taking over Fury of Firestorm (with Ronnie and Jason together as a single Firestorm). It’s like the creative talent that developed this panel have come full circle!

John Byrne’s Superman Quoted Firestorm

In an early issue of his Superman run, John Byrne featured word balloons from over a dozen other titles released that same month — including Firestorm! This information was featured recently over on CBR’s “Comic Book Legends Revealed.”  The issue was Superman #10 (Oct. 1987) by John Byrne and Karl Kesel. In the story, Superman’s powers are increasing uncontrollably. On the page below, Superman’s super-hearing is enhanced to the point where he can hear every sound on the planet (or at least the entire line of DC Comics from that month).

Superman #10 by John Byrne and Karl Kesel

Man, I miss John Byrne on Superman! Great stuff! On the page above, check out the word balloon above Superman’s cape that starts with, “How were you…”. Then take a gander at this panel below from The Fury of Firestorm #64 (Oct. 1987) by John Ostrander, Joe Brozowski, and Sam de la Rosa.

That’s so cool! My thanks for the heads-up on this to Walter from the outstanding Boosterrific site dedicated to Booster Gold!

Bizarro Firestorm in Supergirl

Check it out — Bizarro Firestorm! I was aware of his appearance in the cartoon The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians, but I didn’t think he ever appeared in the comics.

Me am so not happy!

Bizarro Firestorm from Supergirl #57 art by Bernard Chang

This comes from Supergirl #57 (Dec. 2010) by Sterling Gates and Bernard Chang. Below is an image featuring several Bizarro Justice Leaguers. Such fun! Click the image below to enlarge.

My thanks to Michael Bradley (from The Thrilling Adventures of Superman podcast) for the heads-up on this appearance! He was following up on a comment I made on the recent WHO’S WHO PODCAST about Bizarro Firestorm. Michael showed me while there was no pre-Crisis Firestorm, there was a post-Crisis version. Michael went on to say how much he liked the squares on Firestorm’s shirt, and wouldn’t it have been more appropriate for Bizarro Firestorm to have a huge chunk of ice on his head, rather than flame. :)
