Multiplex Confirmed for Flash Episode 2!

The CW have released a description for the second episode of their upcoming series, “Firestorm and his Atomic Friends.” … Wait, sorry. My mistake. … The series is entitled, “The Flash.” However, they did confirm the villain of the second episode is one of our favorite Nuclear Nemeses, Multiplex (Danton Black)! Check out the episode 2 description below:

BARRY HAS FUN WITH HIS NEW POWERS BUT A SETBACK MAKES HIM QUESTION HIS ABILITY TO BE A HERO — Barry (Grant Gustin) escorts Iris (Candice Patton) to a university gathering honoring scientist Simon Stagg (guest star William Sadler). When six gunmen storm the event, Barry changes into The Flash and tries to stop them. While he does save a man’s life, he passes out before he can capture the robbers, which frustrates him. As Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh), Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) scramble to find out what’s wrong with Barry, Joe (Jesse Martin) comes down hard on Barry for taking the law into his own hands and risking his life. Barry realizes that it wasn’t six gunmen but a metahuman named Danton Black (guest star Michael Christopher Smith), who can make multiples of himself. Meanwhile, Iris becomes even more intrigued by the “red streak.” David Nutter directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg & Geoff Johns (101). Original airdate 10/14/2014.

How cool is that?!?! Nice to see they are going with the classic spelling of his name, “Danton” rather than “Dalton”. For more on Michael Smith, click here! All these Firestorm characters appearing on The Flash: Caitlin Snow (Killer Frost), Ronnie Raymond, Plastique, Professor Martin Stein (eventually they’ve said), and now Multiplex! Can’t wait for Bazooka Joan and Zuggernaut!

If you’re unfamiliar with Multiplex, here is some info on the comic character to catch you up. Important facts: Multiplex has the power to create super-strong duplicates of himself; he was the first supervillain Firestorm ever fought; his origin is directly tied to Professor Stein and the creation of Firestorm; and he and Killer Frost are Firestorm’s primary arch-enemies. Below I’ve included two versions of his costume (original and contemporary), as well as his Who’s Who entry circa 1986. I doubt he’ll be wearing a costume on the show, but it’s still cool to see how he appears in the comics. Check it out!

Crisis T-shirt — Want!

Love, love, love this Crisis on Infinite Earths t-shirt! It’s advertised on SuperHeroStuff.com as, “DC Crisis Variant Sublimated T-Shirt”. Unfortunately it carries a $39.99 price tag. Ouch!

Crisis on Infinite Earths Variant Sublimated T-ShirtStill, it’s a really cool shirt! Might just be worth the $40! Y’know, the way the image covers the entire shirt (even the sleeves) reminds me of the “Mega-Print” t-shirts of the 1990s!

My thanks to the many Match-heads who gave me heads-up on this t-shirt.  Just a couple to thank include Doug Zawisza & Roger Priebe, plus many others I’m forgetting right now!

Firestorm’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Last month during the height of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge popularity, good friend to the site Luke Daab posed the question, “… has any thought been given to what would happen if Firestorm accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?”  I pondered the question and came up with two contradictory answers. Then we received what I consider to be a definitive answer. Read on…

Shag’s Answer #1: From Firestorm the Nuclear Man #3 (May 1978), by Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, and Bob Mcleod. Firestorm is kissed by Killer Frost. Her ability to absorb heat from living beings resulted in Firestorm’s flaming hair being extinguished. Once the fire goes out, you can see Ronnie’s hair underneath! I believe this is the only time we see normal hair on Firestorm. A fun gem from the formative days of our favorite Nuclear Man! Possible answer to Luke’s question: Sufficient cold may extinguish Firestorm’s flaming hair.

Firestorm the Nuclear Man #3 by Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, and Bob Mcleod.

Shag’s Answer #2: From The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #16 (March 2013) by Dan Jurgens, Karl Kesel, and Ray McCarthy. In this example, Firestorm’s flaming hair continues to burn even though he’s submerged in cold water. Possible answer to Luke’s question: Cold water would not extinguish Firestorm’s flaming hair.

Fury of Firestorm #16 by Dan Jurgens, Karl Kesel, and Ray McCarthy

Definitive Answer: While the question was being debated among the fans, Firestorm writer and artist Dan Jurgens himself chimed in! Dan’s answer was, “Given the science of how his power works, I don’t see anyway the ‘fire’ gets snuffed out. It’s generated from with in and isn’t really fire anyway.” Given Dan’s tenure with DC Comics and writing the Firestorm title, I consider that pretty definitive! Thanks, Dan!

Custom Mego Firestorm in Development – Part 1!

So excited about this! Markneto (a.k.a. Mark Sautter) is working on a custom Mego Firestorm for me! If you’re not familiar with Markneto’s astonishing custom work, visit his blog or “Like” his Facebook page. For another example, check out his amazing custom Mego Doctor Fate (given to me by my generous friend and FIRE & WATER PODCAST co-host Rob Kelly).

From time to time, Markneto will provide us with updates on the process of creating this custom Mego Firestorm. He’s already jumped in and created the custom card art (see below). The front is based upon the original house ad promoting Firestorm’s debut (technically, the house ad was his first appearance in a comic)! Mark clearly knows his audience as the back image includes Doctor Fate, Blue Devil, and Slipknot!

Can’t wait for further updates from Markneto! Please help spread the word about Markneto’s gorgeous custom work!

Who's Who The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #22

Here are your Firestorm-related Who’s Who entries from this issue…

First up is Starro by Ian Akin. Firestorm first encountered this penta-digited foe back in Justice League of America #189 (April 1981). Note you can see Firestorm in the surprint below with a starfish stuck to his face. Click to enlarge.

Who's Who Starro by Ian Akin

Next up is Steel by Chuck Patton and Larry Mahlstedt. While Firestorm and Steel never served in the Justice League at the same time, they did fight side-by-side during Legends (1986). Click to enlarge.

Who's Who Steel by Chuck Patton and Larry Mahlstedt

Then we’ve got the Suicide Squad by Luke McDonnell & Rick Magyar. Firestorm faced the Suicide Squad soon after their ongoing series premiered in Fury of Firestorm #64 (October 1987). Additionally, this was the final issue of Firestorm’s monthly comic to feature the original team of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein as the Nuclear Man. I guess you could say the Suicide Squad (and Pozhar) were the original Firestorm’s final foes. Click to enlarge.

Finally, we’ve got Swamp Thing by Steve Bissette and John Totleben! The original Firestorm didn’t encounter Swamp Thing very much. However, while Firestorm was in his Elemental form (1989-1990), the two characters interacted more often thanks to their shared origins.

Dragon Con 2014 Cosplay Crossover

Awesome Cosplay and a Blog Crossover?!?! Two great tastes that taste great together! A number of different blogs have combined forces today to feature some of the amazing cosplayers at Dragon Con 2014! Each blog in this crossover will focus on their own favorite heroes and corresponding cosplayers. If you’re not familiar with Dragon Con, it’s the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe! It’s held each year over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta. It is also known as the premier convention for cosplayers and “Geek Mardi Gras”! I’ve attended 10 of the past 12 years, and absolutely love the insanity and fun!

Dragon Con 2014

Today here at FIRESTORM FAN we’re going to feature… well… sadly I didn’t see any Firestorm nor Killer Frost cosplayers this year. (sad face) However, there were hundreds of other amazing DC Comics related cosplayers this year. Just check out these group shots! Both of these photos were taken by Patrick Sun, and you can find many more on his Flickr page. Click each to enlarge!

Now just for fun, check out this zoomable photo of the DC Comics Mega Photoshoot by Michael Blitch! These photos were taken during cosplay photoshoots organized by the Superhero Costuming Forum. The planning and coordination of these massive photoshoots is an astonishing task! The Grand Poobah over at the Superhero Costuming Forum is Allen Hansard. Allen’s probably best known to you Match-heads as a frequent Firestorm cosplayer! To the rest of the world, Allen is known as the guy who directs most of these photoshoots! In fact, this year he cosplayed as himself directing a Marvel shoot (he’s represented below by Doctor Strange with the megaphone)! Ha!

Superhero Costuming Forum Dragon Con Director Allen Hansard

I took about 200 pictures this year of various cosplayers and activities which you can find on Flickr. Hopefully next year there will be a plethora of Firestorm cosplayers (especially after his break-out roll on the TV series The Flash)!
