Trinity War Part 4 in Stores Today

Quit goofing around on the internet. Go read “Trinity War” Part 4 in Justice League of America #7 in stores today! I’ll admit, I was sorta lukewarm about this crossover when it first started. However, I’m now finding myself looking forward to the upcoming installments!

If you can’t get to the comic shop right now (what’s wrong with you?!?!), then head over to the New York Post online to check out the five page preview! Just so you know, a particular Firestorm rogue makes an appearance in the preview! Below is the cover by Doug Mahnke which includes our favorite Nuclear Man! Click the image below to enlarge.

Forever Evil by Geoff Johns and David Finch

Geoff Johns gave an interview recently on the upcoming mini-series, Forever Evil. During the interview, Geoff confirmed the antagonists of the piece will be the Crime Syndicate of America from Earth-3. Also confirmed was Deathstorm as a member of that team. Geoff described Deathstorm in the following way, “Deathstorm is a scientist who’s been merged with the dead body of his lab assistant. It’s given him a cold demeanor and a clammy touch. He’s essentially a mad Nazi scientist with Atomic Power at his hand.”

There is a lot more information to read in Geoff’s full interview with IGN!

Wow! Pretty interesting and creepy stuff! I wonder if the Earth 3 scientist was Martin Stein, Danton (a.k.a. Dalton) Black, or someone else entirely. Since Deathstorm is so radically different, I’m hopeful his personality will be different from the previous incarnation. Only time will tell if Deathstorm is still used as commentary on 1990s villains.

Here are your Firestorm-related Who’s Who entries from this issue…

Killer Frost, arguably Firestorm’s most well-known adversary, drawn by the co-creator of the character Al Milgrom!

Justice League of America, featuring our favorite hot-head, by Luke McDonnell & Bill Wray. In retrospect, probably should have gone with Perez for an entry this important. Before anyone comments, I realize Luke McDonnell was drawing the JLA at the time. I’m just sayin’, such a high profile entry with this art…   Click to enlarge.

Custom Mego Firestorm by Ben Plavin

Fellow Match-head Ben Plavin took some time to make his own custom Mego figure of Firestorm! The figure started life as a Mego Iron Man, but Ben customized the head, repainted the face and created the outfit (with some help from Dr. Mego). He even went as far as to create a box to go with the figure! Check out the images below!

Elemental Firestorm Promoted in DC Direct Currents #16

A few months ago we ran the back cover of Direct Currents #16 from May 1989. Turns out that back cover was a tie-in with an article within that issue.

Check out this cool promotional blurb from Direct Currents #16 about the coming of the Elemental Firestorm! Click the image to enlarge!

Direct Currents #16 featuring the Elemental Firestorm

Man, I love me some Elemental Firestorm! That piece makes we want to break out those issues and read them all over again!

If you aren’t familiar with Direct Currents, they were a free promotional magazine containing approximately 8 pages soliciting the titles being released by DC Comics that month. My local comic shop didn’t typically carry Direct Currents, so it was always a treat to find one in other shops.

My thanks to Michael Bailey of the Fortress of Baileytude sending this scan my way!

Deathstorm Confirmed for Forever Evil… plus I rant for a bit

A while back we reported rumors that Deathstorm might make his way to DC’s New 52. Well, we can now confirm Deathstorm’s return in the upcoming Forever Evil mini-series.

DC Comics has released a preview for the first issue of the Forever Evil mini-series by Geoff Johns and David Finch.  You can find all five pages of the preview over on Bleeding Cool and Comic Book.com. Below is one of the preview pages, specifically the one featuring Deathstorm. Check it out…

Forever Evil #1 Preview featuring Deathstorm

Wondering how Deathstorm can appear in the New 52, even though Firestorm didn’t appear in the New 52 version of Blackest Night? Well, share your own speculation in the comments! Also, check out the post from last week and read other Match-heads speculation. Personally, I’m leaning towards the villains in Forever Evil (identified as the Crime Syndicate) as residents of an alternate Earth, and Deathstorm is simply Firestorm’s opposite member. We’ll see soon enough!

<rant> Now for a little editorial. I’m just gonna lay my cards on the table here… I didn’t care for Deathstorm in Brightest Day. Visually, he’s cool looking, however, his personality and actions grated on my nerves (specifically his use of language and gory attacks). When writing Brightest Day, Geoff Johns said the following about Deathstorm, “He’s a character that’s really fun to write. We wanted to basically create a 1990s villain who loved being from the 1990s.”  If that was Geoff’s plan for the character, I think he accomplished his goal during Blackest Night and Brightest Day as the character was a pastiche of bad ’90s stereotypes. However, that’s exactly what Deathstorm was, a stereotype. He represented the bad feelings people have towards ’90s comics, but the reality is that many ’90s comics and villains were very good. Saying Deathstorm represents ’90s villains is like saying Disco represents the 1970s. There was more to the ’70s than Disco, and there was more to ’90s villains than the stereotypes Deathstorm represented. While I’m a child of ’80s comics, I read and enjoyed many comics in the ’90s. Lots of people take cheap shots at ’90s comics nowadays, and I can’t help but stand up for them. Maybe it’s because I enjoyed so many comics during that decade, or maybe it’s because I’m hard-wired as a geek to stand up for the underdog. Either way, I wish people would start celebrating the better aspects of the ’90s instead of trying to further tear down what was bad.

Additionally, Geoff Johns has been known to use characters as a cipher for his commentary. Geoff’s quote above indicates that Deathstorm was his commentary on ’90s villains. Geoff’s said in other places that Superboy-Prime was supposed to represent whiny fanboys. Also, I suspect that Murk (appearing in recent issues of Aquaman) is Geoff’s commentary on ’90s Aquaman. Since Firestorm was barely active in the ’90s, it seems to me that commentary on ’90s villains would be better suited attached to a character that was actually popular during that decade.

With all that said, Deathstorm is oddly popular with readers and I am thankful Firestorm has such a high-profile foe. It’s just for my personal tastes, I’d rather have a villain that’s less grating on my nerves. </rant>

My thanks to Brandon Leonard and Russ Burlingame for the heads-up on Deathstorm’s return!
