Cadmus tries to add a new member to Justice League 3000. We say “tried to” because the last thing Firestorm wants to do is join what he considers to be a group of losers. It gets complicated.

I originally had no intention of picking up this book.  While I dig the creative team, I just didn’t have any passion for something resembling DC 1,000,000. Now, however, they’ve got my attention. I can’t help wondering who is in control of this version of Firestorm. Are we talking a clone of Ronnie, Jason, Professor Stein, Miguel O’Hara, or something else altogether?  Okay, “Miguel O’Hara” was a joke.  Just seeing you were paying attention.

As we find out more, I’ll be sure to share! My thanks to Doug Zawisza and the guys at The Aquaman Shrine for the heads-up!

Multiplex & Mindboggler in Suicide Squad film?

Firestorm rogues Multiplex and Mindboggler could appear in the theatrical Suicide Squad film?!?! According to Bleeding Cool, a Suicide Squad film script by Justin Marks has been floating around since early 2011. In this version of the script, both Multiplex and Mindboggler make appearances!!

Suicide Squad advertisement in DC Comics 1987

Check out full coverage of the Suicide Squad script over on Bleeding Cool. Below I’ve posted the two script pages related to our Nuclear Nemeses (yes, that’s plural for “nemesis” – I looked it up).

First is a small snippet from the script featuring our favorite multiple man!

Suicide Squad film script featuring Multiplex

Next, the Mindboggler takes to the screen!

Suicide Squad film script featuring Mindboggler

Not sure if this film will ever see production, or once the movie is made if these characters will actually make the cut. Regardless, pretty cool they made it this far!! Also, I can’t discuss Suicide Squad without acknowledging the comic writer was none other than Firestorm scribe John Ostrander!!

My thanks to Diabolu Frank for sending the news my way! Thanks Frank! Be sure to check out Franks blogs by clicking here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here.

Firestorm and Superman by Dan Jurgens

Just yesterday we ran a piece on Dan Jurgens writing Firestorm in The New 52: Futures End. Coincidentally, a few hours later DC Comics announced Dan will be writing the new ongoing series, Aquaman and the Others!  For you listeners of The Fire and Water Podcast, let that sink in a minute. In the near future, Dan Jurgens will be writing the adventures of Firestorm and Aquaman at the same time!! How cool is that?!?!

In honor of Dan’s achievement, I thought we’d run one of my favorite Dan Jurgens’ Firestorm pages. This comes from The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #20. Enjoy!

Futures End – Dan Jurgens working on Firestorm

Back in December we heard about DC’s new weekly series for 2014, Futures End. Click here for more information. Some of the characters featured in this series will include: Batman Beyond, Frankenstein, and Firestorm. The writers on the series include: Jeff Lemire, Keith Giffen, Brian Azzarello and Dan Jurgens. In an interview last week with Comic Book Resources, Dan Jurgens explained that he’s working on Firestorm’s part of the story. Here is Dan’s quote:

The character I’m playing around with most right now is Firestorm. One of the things we talked about when we first started to get the overall story ideas together is, if we’re going to tell a story that takes place five years from now, what are the changes the characters might naturally go through in that amount of time? Say, if you take a 25-year-old person, hypothetically they’re 30 five years later, they don’t go through as much change. If you take high school age characters, like Firestorm — or the kids that made him up, Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch — that five-year period for them is filled with change. You really move from being a kid to an adult; you are into your college years or through college already. I’m playing around with those general concepts of what happens to these people we might have first seen in their high school years — what are they five years down? How does that affect them in terms of whether or not they’re a superhero like Firestorm, or whether they make a decision not to be? That’s really the area I’m focusing on.

Sounds pretty cool! After reading Dan Jurgens’ run on the recent Firestorm series, I’m excited to see his take on these characters five years later! Also, it’s a comfort to hear that in the future Firestorm will still be composed of Ronnie and Jason. With current events in Forever Evil, I wasn’t sure what might happen to our favorite Nuclear Man. Click here to read the entire interview with the writers of Futures End.

Here are your Firestorm-related Who’s Who entries from this issue…

Multiplex, the first supervilliain Firestorm ever faced! Also, in some ways Multiplex was intended to be the antithesis of Firestorm. Both gained their powers from the same nuclear explosion. Our favorite Nuclear Man represents the power of fusion, while Multiplex represents the power of fission. Martin Stein is a respected scientific genius, whereas Danton Black was a shady, spotlight-stealing scientific-hack. I always enjoyed seeing Multiplex create smaller and smaller duplicates of himself. Fun! Click the image to enlarge.

Multiplex Who's Who by Joe Brozowski and Greg Brooks

Next is the Monitor (and Anti-Monitor). Firestorm was recruited by the Monitor and Harbinger early in the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Click the image below to enlarge, then read the entry. It’s a bit long, but provides an excellent recap of Crisis without getting bogged down in too much detail. I was seriously impressed by this write-up!

The Monitor and Anti-Monitor Who's Who by George Perez

Finally are the New Gods. Firestorm met several of them in Justice League of America #183-185. This was during one of the annual team-ups with the JSA. If you’ve never read those issues, I highly recommend them! Click the image to enlarge.

Nickelodeon’s Video Comics with Firestorm

Back in 1980 & 1981, a fledgling children’s TV network called Nickelodeon ran a series entitled Video Comics. Each episode, a DC comic was read to the audience while panels were shown on-screen. Some stories included were Adam Strange, Nutsy Squirrel, Sugar & Spike, and Swamp Thing. The live-action opening showed kids arriving at a store to buy comic books. Watch the video embedded below and look carefully around the 10 second mark! Click here if you can’t view the video below.

Here is a screen shot from those opening credits featuring some dude with his hair on fire!

Nickelodeon's Video Comics aired from 1979-1981

According to the Director, there were roughly 70 comics read for the series. Very little information exists on the internet about this series. Therefore, we have no way of knowing if Firestorm was one of the comics featured. I never watched this series myself, but it looks like so much fun! You can watch an episode right now featuring Swamp Thing by clicking here! Neat!

My thanks to Rob Kelly of The Aquaman Shrine for the heads-up on this series! Thanks, Aqua-rob!

Professor Stein is a Badass! And other current appearances

Fair warning, the following contains SPOILERS for some of the Forever Evil saga…

In case you missed it at your local comic shop, Professor Martin Stein is a complete badass! Firestorm doesn’t have his own monthly series, and he’s been incapacitated in Forever Evil, but he’s still an important character in the three series below. Don’t miss your favorite Nuclear Man and his supporting cast! Pick up these comics!

Check out the panel below from last week’s Forever Evil: A.R.G.U.S. #3! This is just one panel from eight pages of Firestorm-related action. Be sure to pick up your copy by Sterling Gates, Neil Edwards, Jason Paz, and Jay Leisten! Well worth your time and money! Click the image to enlarge.

Professor Martin Stein in Forever Evil ARGUS #3

Next is another Professor Stein-centric appearance from Justice League #26, released two weeks ago. This is one panel from Deathstorm’s full-page origin. Pick up your copy by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Eber Ferreira, Rob Hunter, and Andy Lanning. Click to enlarge.

Justice League of America Forever Evil Deathstorm

Finally, Justice League of America #10 from last month teased us with this Firestorm-centric page at the very end. Pick up your copy by Matt Kindt, Tom Derenick, Eddy Barrows, Tom Nguyen, Allen Martinez, and Hi-Fi. They’ve been building a story tied-in with Firestorm’s role in Forever Evil. Hopefully next week’s issue we’ll see more of our favorite Nuclear Man!
