Nuclear News – 2010-02-03 – B&B Cartoon Sneak Peek, Figures, Legos

Welcome to another installment of FIRESTORM FAN’s Nuclear News! Here are some news and web findings on our favorite hothead.

Firestorm in Batman: The Brave and the Bold

  • It’s been announced that Firestorm will appear in the upcoming direct-to-video animated feature, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.  Firestorm will be voiced by Cedric Yarbrough.  At this time it’s not clear if the Firestorm in the feature will be from the “good” Earth of the Justice League, or the “evil” Earth of the Crime Syndicate.  World’s Finest Online has the cast rundown for the feature.  My thanks to Joshua Wolf and Max Henderson for sending this information my way.
  • The Ronnie Raymond Firestorm DC Universe Infinite Heroes figure has started appearing in stores.  Keep your eyes out for this figure.  Get it before it disappears.  My thanks to CJ/Outburst for the heads-up on this.

  • Kurt Harris put together a fun line-drawing showing what a Firestorm Lego figure might look like.  You can find Kurt Harris’ work on Flickr.

  • Over at the Favorite Fiction blog, Marcus McElhaney has put together another Firestorm battle using the customized Capcom fighting game.  This time out it’s Firestorm versus Marvel’s Quasar from the 1990s. If you can’t view the embedded video below, please click here.

  • Finally, Ninjabot1000 on YouTube has put together a review of the DC Universe Classics Worlds Greatest Superheroes Firestorm action figure. It’s about 7 minutes long and goes into great detail about the figure.  If you can’t view the embedded video below, please click here.

Crisis On Earth-Blog: The DC Challenge

Crisis on Earth-Blog: The DC ChallengeFirestorm DC Challenge by George Perez

Welcome to FIRESTORM FAN’s part of the Crisis on Earth-Blog: The DC Challenge! FIRESTORM FAN is the source for DC Comics’ Nuclear Man! You’ll find anything and everything Firestorm-related here. Things such as merchandise, comics, toys, apparel, cartoons, news, creator interviews, and commentary about the character. If this is your first time here, welcome aboard! If you’re a regular, I think you’ll enjoy this crossover event.

Today and throughout the next few weeks on comic book-themed blogs across the internet, DC Comics characters are being spotlighted in a series of challenges. In my case I’ll be representing Firestorm, my all-time favorite superhero. Your DC Challenge, if you choose to accept it, involves visiting each of these various blogs and tackling their particular challenge.

The objective of these challenges is to go from blog to blog until you reach the goal-page featuring a lush scan from an obscure George Pérez pin-up of every major character involved in this crossover event. We all hope you enjoy this online scavenger hunt, and the new comic blogs you’ll be exposed to! Many thanks go out to mastermind Frank Lee Delano (of the blogs: Idol-Head of Diabolu, Justice League Detroit, and …nurgh…) for coordinating this massive effort! Way to go, Frank!

Your FIRESTORM FAN challenge is the crossword puzzle below. I couldn’t embed the crossword puzzle itself, so you’ll have to click the image to be taken to the interactive puzzle.  Each question in the puzzle relates to either Firestorm or a character participating in this crossover. Just a heads-up, I removed any spaces or hyphens from the answers. For example “Captain Amazing” would simply be “CaptainAmazing”; or “Locust-Man” would simply be “LocastMan”. Once you’ve finished the challenge, be sure to investigate the other links beneath the puzzle. Have fun!

Hope you enjoyed the crossword puzzle! Now you’ll have to work your way through a few of the blogs below if you want to reach the goal-page featuring an obscure George Pérez pin-up of every major character in this crossover. Some of these blogs are participating in the crossover today, others will be in the coming weeks. Visit them now, visit them later, visit them often!

If you enjoy blog crossovers, then you may want to check out the previous comic blog crossovers we’ve done. The first major Crisis on Earth-Blog celebrated the gorgeous George Pérez/Alex Ross painting from the Crisis on Infinite Earths 1998 hardcover. The next blog crossover was a celebration of the Super Powers Collection’s 25th Anniversary.

Firestorm on Batman: Brave & the Bold Cartoon on Feb. 5

Firestorm on Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon

Firestorm finally returns to animation after nearly 25 years! It’s been confirmed that Firestorm will appear on the Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon on Friday, February 5.

Here is the lowdown: Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 7:30pm (ET) – “A Bat Divided!”

A school field trip goes awry when Dr. Double X causes a lab explosion that fuses slacker science teacher Ronnie to his genius pupil Jason, creating the reluctant hero Firestorm…and unbeknown to them, it leaves Batman divided into three parts!

My thanks to Max Handerson for the heads-up on this information.  Details may be found at World’s Finest Online.

No matter which incarnation of ole match-head is your favorite, this is good news for our Nuclear Man.  The more exposure Firestorm gets (regardless of the version), the more it increases awareness.  Hopefully that will translate into higher sales for comics he appears in.

Gerry Conway Firestorm Interview Part 2

We’re still celebrating one year of FIRESTORM FAN.com this week! Today we’ve got part two of our interview with Firestorm co-creator, Gerry Conway!

Gerry Conway co-creator of Firestorm

If you haven’t listened to part one of the interview, please click here.  As I mentioned the other day, Gerry was absolutely wonderful to talk with. I really appreciate how generous he was with his time. We talked for roughly 80 minutes about Firestorm’s creation, artists, the writing process, creator rights, the DC Implosion, merchandise, where the character has journeyed since his involvement, and much more!

Gerry and I spoke so long, I had to break the interview into two parts. The first part ran about 50 minutes long, while this second part runs about 30 minutes.

You may play part two of the interview right here on the FIRESTORM FAN site with the handy-dandy player at the top of this post! I apologize for not offering the interview in text format, but transcribing an interview that long would have taken months.

Alternatively, you may download the file and listen to it on an MP3 player or your computer. You may download part two of the interview by right-clicking here, choosing “Save Target/Link As”, and selecting a location on your computer to save the file (28.5 MB).

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy the interview. To keep up with Gerry, be sure to check him out on Twitter and Facebook.

If that’s still not enough Gerry Conway Firestorm action for you, then check out Back Issue Magazine.  Gerry along with several others did a fantastic interview about Firestorm for Back Issue magazine three years ago. If you haven’t read it, issue #20 of Back Issue is available as a digital download from TwoMorrows Publishing. The PDF is only $2.95, so go check it out!

Gerry Conway Firestorm Interview

We’re celebrating one year of FIRESTORM FAN.com this week!  In honor of the occasion, we’ve got an amazing interview with Firestorm co-creator, Gerry Conway!

Gerry Conway Firestorm co-creator

Gerry Conway was one of the most prolific comic book writers of the 1970s and 80s.  His writing credits go on for miles! He’s probably best known for co-creating the Punisher and scripting the death of Gwen Stacy in the Amazing Spider-Man.  He also wrote for and produced such TV series as Law & Order and Diagnosis Murder.  Back in 1977, Gerry created Firestorm the Nuclear Man along with artist Al Milgrom.  Gerry continued to write the character of Firestorm for about nine years.  Gerry recently returned to comics after an almost 20 year absence with the insightful mini-series, The Last Days of Animal Man.

Gerry is a true professional and a joy to talk with. I really appreciate how generous he was with his time. We talked for roughly 80 minutes about Firestorm’s creation, artists, the writing process, creator rights, the DC Implosion, merchandise, where the character has journeyed since his involvement, and much more!

Given that we talked for so long, I’ve opted to break the interview into two parts.  The first part runs about 50 minutes long, while the second part runs about 30 minutes and will be available here later this week (UPDATEpart two is available now by clicking here).

You may play part one of the interview right here on the FIRESTORM FAN site with the handy-dandy player at the top of this post! I apologize for not offering the interview in text format, but transcribing an interview that long would have taken months.

Alternatively, you may download the file and listen to it on an MP3 player or your computer. You may download part one of the interview by right-clicking here, choosing “Save Target/Link As”, and selecting a location on your computer to save the file (48.6 MB).

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy the interview. To keep up with Gerry, be sure to check him out on Twitter and Facebook.

Firestorm Original Art Extravaganza

Happy New Year, Match-heads!  We’re gearing up for the one year anniversary of FIRESTORM FAN with an amazing interview featuring Firestorm co-creator Gerry Conway!  Watch for that in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, it’s time for more original Firestorm pages from our friend Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog.  He happens to own several of the original Firestorm pages and has been kind enough to allow me to publish scans of them here. I’ve been horribly negligent in publishing his more recent acquisitions, so I’m playing catch up today.  Jon’s been a great contributor to FIRESTORM FAN and my thanks go out to him. You may view scans of his entire art collection online by clicking here.

Below is an amazing shot from the series 52.  This is page three from issue #24 featuring Firestorm’s attempt to create a new Justice League.  It was drawn by Phil Jimenez with inks by Andy Lanning.  Such a wonderful shot of a truly quirky team.  I love every character in this group!

Below are two preliminary sketches by Matt Haley as he tried to figure out the design for the cover to Firestorm vol III #11.

Below are two pages from Firestorm vol II #19.  These were drawn by the legendary Gene Colan. The second page was even signed by the artist!

Firestorm vol 2 issue 19 pg 22

The following page is a nice piece from Firestorm vol II issue #30 by penciller Rafael Kayanan and inker Romeo Tanghal.

These next two pages come from Firestorm vol III issue #5 and were penciled by ChrisCross and inked by Keith Champagne.  In these pages, Firestorm meets Superman and the Flash for the first time.

Firestorm vol 3 issue 5 pg 20

This next one is from Firestorm vol III issue 11 and features a great shot of Killer Frost.  This was drawn by penciller Dale Eaglesham and inker Wade von Grawbadger.

The next page is from Firestorm vol III issue 12 and features the return of the Ronnie Raymond Firestorm!  In this shot he’s chasing down his long-time foe Multiplex.  This nuclearrific page was penciled by Jamal Igle and inked by Rob Stull.

The page below is from Firestorm vol III issue 22 and features the fusing of Jason Rusch and Professor Martin Stein.  This page was penciled by Eddy Barrows and inked by Rob Stull.

Finally a nice quiet diner scene from Firestorm vol III issue 32.  This one was penciled by Jamal Igle and inked by Keith Champagne.  Be sure to watch for the characters in the background!

My thanks again to Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog for providing me with theses scans to publish!

Nuclear News – 2009-12-16 – Gerry Conway Interview, JLA, Vs The Senty, and other web findings

Welcome to another installment of FIRESTORM FAN’s Nuclear News! Here are some news and web findings on our favorite hothead.

  • I guess the biggest news about Firestorm this week is my own.  Gerry Conway, co-creator of Firestorm and writer of the character for nine years, was kind enough to grant an interview for FIRESTORM FAN! He was super nice and extraordinarily generous with his time. Even though Mr. Conway has had an amazing and prolific career, we focused almost exclusively on Firestorm for the interview.  Once I get the audio edited and cleaned-up (read as: edit out tons of my fanboy awestruck ramblings), it should come out to about an hour.  The interview will be posted as an audio file, as it would literally take me months to transcribe the interview.  Watch for this interview in the first part of January to commemorate the one year anniversary of the FIRESTORM FAN blog.
  • I want to send a huge THANKS to Tommy from the Bat-Blog, a fantastic blog dedicated to all-things Batman! He was kind enough to give FIRESTORM FAN a shout-out last week. That was super-cool of him! Thanks Tommy!
  • While Firestorm doesn’t appear in Justice League of America #39, he is mentioned several times.  Additionally, there is a very creepy scene of Black Lantern Doctor Light licking Gehenna’s transformed head from Blackest Night.  Yuck!

  • Over at the Favorite Fiction blog, Marcus McElhaney postulates what would happen if Marvel Comic’s The Sentry fought Firestorm.  He even uses video from the customized Capcom fighting game to make his point.  While I’m not thrilled with the outcome of the fight, it’s still really cool to see it. Watch for Ronnie transforming into Firestorm and listen for sounds from the Super Friends cartoon. Click here to visit the Favorite Fiction blog.

If you can’t view the embedded video above, please click here.

  • Over at The Fwoosh, The Knights Round Table created several Green Lantern custom Mego action figures for Custom Con 24The Knights Round Table is a customizing community for the 8inch and 9inch cloth scale action figure format.  Here is their Mego scale Black Lantern Firestorm.

  • I stumbled across the comic strip below by Fred Hembeck on The Hembeck Files!  It appears it was originally drawn back in 1978, prior to Firestorm vol I getting canceled.

  • Finally, a cute Firestorm drawing by Matt Kaufenberg.  Given the hair on Firestorm, I gotta wonder if this was based upon early pictures of the Firestorm Blammoid.  My thanks to BDog for sending this my way.
