FURY OF FIRESTORM #0 Preview!

The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #0 goes on sale tomorrow! Many folks are excited for the adventures of the newly-merged Ronnie & Jason Firestorm! If you can’t wait until tomorrow, check out the five page preview over on IGN right now! Click here to check it out!

This issue is written by Joe Harris, penciled by Yildiray Cinar, inked by Marlo Alquiza, colored by Hi-Fi, and lettered by Travis Lanham! Sadly this will be the final issue of this creative team. However, they’ve given us a fantastic run of Firestorm comics and it looks like they are going out with a bang!

This issue is entitled, “Covalence”. If you’re unfamiliar with the word, below are some definitions to help explain. Since this issue is about Ronnie and Jason merging to become a singular Firestorm, the definitions below begin to make sense.

  • Covalence: the formation and nature of covalent bonds
  • Covalent bonds: a type of chemical bond involving the sharing of electrons between atoms in a molecule, especially the sharing of a pair of electrons by two adjacent atoms

Below are a few of the pages from the preview. Be sure to visit IGN to see all five preview pages!

Custom Doctor Fate Mego Action Figure

Okay, this is only marginally about Firestorm, but humor me as my birthday is this weekend. Today we’re looking at an incredibly thoughtful birthday present I received from Rob Kelly, my co-host for THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST and webmaster of The Aquaman Shrine!

Obviously I’m nutso for Firestorm, but I’m also a freak for Doctor Fate. Yup, I dig The Ankh Avenger! … okay, no one calls him The Ankh Avenger but me, just deal with it … For my birthday Rob commissioned this amazing custom action figure of Doctor Fate in the classic Mego style! How cool is this?!?!?!

Custom Doctor Fate Mego Action Figure

Rob mailed this to me last week. I had absolutely no idea and was floored when I opened the package! Just look at this super-cool figure and custom card artwork!

Custom Doctor Fate Mego Action Figure

The quality of Doctor Fate’s helmet often makes or breaks an action figure, and in this case it definitely makes it!

Custom Doctor Fate Mego Action Figure

This custom card artwork knocks me out! In addition to replicating the Mego action figure card, you’ve got: The Immortal Doctor Fate logo from the reprint mini-series in the 80s, the FIRE AND WATER ACTION HEROES logo, a Walt Simonson drawn Doctor Fate, Chuck Patton drawn Aquaman, Slipknot by someone (anyone know?), Paris Cullins drawn Blue Devil, and an Al Milgrom drawn Firestorm! Someone threw a party and invited all my favorites!

Below you’ll find the back of the card! More gorgeous Doctor Fate artwork, this time by Shawn McManus! Then inserted is a classic Who’s Who entry for The Ankh Avenger! Sweet!

Wow! Such an amazing and generous gift! My eternal thanks go out to Rob! THANK YOU!

Since you’re already messing around on the internet, please visit the blog of Mark Sautter, the creator of this Doctor Fate custom Mego action figure. He features lots of other really cool custom Mego figures! Check it out!

Firestorm Meets Thor in Super-Team Family

Remember that fantastic team-up between Firestorm and Thor drawn by Jack Kirby? Super-Team Family proudly presents Firestorm and The Mighty Thor in, “Wrath of the Axe-Guardian!”

Superteam Family Presents Firestorm and Thor by Jack Kirby

No, you didn’t miss an actual inter-company crossover starring our favorite match-head and the Asgardian Prince. This fictitious meeting is the work of a gentleman named Ross who runs Super-Team Family: The Lost Issues! That site is dedicated to the greatest team-ups that never happened. He started with Brave and the Bold fake covers starring Batman, transitioned into Marvel Two-in-One fake covers starring the Thing, and is now doing Super-Team Family featuring a wide variety of team-ups. Below are a few previous Firestorm appearances:

Be sure to check out Ross’ work! There are some real gems in there, and they were all done with Microsoft Paint! Impressive! My thanks to Dave Cox for the heads-up on this particular entry!

Go Buy FURY OF FIRESTORM Trade Paperback

While at your comic shop today, be sure to pick up the trade paperback, The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men — God Particle. It was released last week, but you should still be able to find it in stores.

Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men God Particle trade paperback

This trade collects the exciting first six issues of the series! If you haven’t tried the series before now, this is a great opportunity to read the entire first arc from Gail Simone, Ethan Van Sciver, and Yildiray Cinar! Also, you get six issues for the price of five! Not a bad deal!

For those that have already read the issues, in addition to the great story and art, you’ll get bonus materials such as: Yildiray Cinar pencil pages, character designs, and improved coloring (there were some coloring errors in the first few issues of the series).

Here is the solicitation:

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN VOL. 1 – THE GOD PARTICLE

  • Two FIRESTORMS make their explosive returns in the DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 series!

Cover by: Ethan Van Sciver

Also worth mentioning, on the last page it says, “Continued in Firestorm – The Firestorm Protocols“! To my knowledge the second Fury of Firestorm trade paperback hasn’t been solicited yet. I’ve been a little worried because it should have been advertised by now. So this teaser is encouraging news! We need to support Firestorm-related trade paperbacks. Let’s send a clear message to DC that we’ll support Firestorm comics in trade paperback format. Who knows, perhaps this will eventually lead to DC collecting the classic Fury of Firestorm run from the 80s!

DragonCon 2012 Cosplay Crossover

CROSSOVER! Everybody loves a crossover! Twelve different blogs have combined forces today to feature some of the amazing cosplayers at DragonCon 2012! Each blog in this crossover will focus on their own favorite heroes and corresponding cosplayers. If you’re not familiar with DragonCon, it’s the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe! It’s held each year over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta. It is also known as the premier convention for cosplayers.

DragonCon

Today here at FIRESTORM FAN we’re going to feature… well… Firestorm. Sadly there was only one Firestorm-related cosplayer this year, but what a great costume it was!!! Box Hero Firestorm! All of the photos I’m displaying today were taken during cosplay photoshoots organized by the Superhero Costuming Forum. The planning and coordination of these massive photoshoots is an astonishing task! My hats off to these folks for doing such a great job!

The Firestorm Box Hero was cosplayed by Allen Hansard (see below). Allen was the very first Firestorm cosplayer we featured here at FIRESTORM FAN. Additionally, Allen is the Grand Poobah over at the Superhero Costuming Forum.

If you’ve enjoyed this blog crossover, then you should check out some previous comic blog crossovers we’ve done. The first major blog crossover celebrated the gorgeous George Pérez/Alex Ross painting from the Crisis on Infinite Earths 1998 hardcover. The next major blog crossover was a celebration of the Super Powers Collection’s 25th Anniversary. Some subsequent major crossovers included: DC Challenge, Read This Too, Mayfairstivus, April Fool’s Day 2011, Blackest Night to Brightest Day, Green Lantern: Circle of Fire, Animated Anthem Day and Secret Files & Origins!

Firestorm Sketch Card by Thom Zahler (of “Love and Capes”)

Check out this super-cool Firestorm sketch card I bought at DragonCon from Thom Zahler, creator and artist of the comic book, Love and Capes! I dig Thom’s clean, cartoony style — it’s just plain fun!

In addition to being ultra-talented, Thom is also a huge Firestorm fan! Back in 2009, I commissioned a Firehawk sketch from Thom which you can see by clicking here. If you haven’t checked out Love and Capes, you can order the trades online or from your local comic book store.
