Merry Christmas from FIRESTORM FAN!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to the readers of FIRESTORM FAN! It’s been a fantastic year for us Match-heads and I sincerely appreciate all your support and comments! Y’all are the best!

Speaking of comments from fans… Match-head John Godwin sent me an audio file of him and his girlfriend, Rachel, singing their own heart-warming holiday tune. Give it a listen using the player below. Alternatively, you may download the file and listen by right-clicking here, choosing “Save Target/Link As”, and selecting a location on your computer to save the file (618 KB).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

By John’s own admission, Rachel is the better singer. After listening to the song, I’d have to agree. :)  My thanks to John and Rachel for sending this original song! So much fun and the stinger is great!

Have a very happy holidays! Ho Ho Ho!

The Christmas Eve Not-So Random Panel of the Day

Here is your not-so-random panel of the day! Take a guess where it’s from…

Firestorm by Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, and Jack Abel

You long-time Match-heads may have guessed this panel comes from Firestorm the Nuclear Man vol I #4 (Aug/Sept 1978)! Well, did you also notice the deer on the right side of the panel? Take a closer look below…

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in Firestorm by Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, and Jack Abel

That’s right, not only did Firestorm The Nuclear Man vol I #4 feature the introduction of the Hyena, it also featured a cameo by Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! Clearly either penciller Al Milgrom or inker Jack Abel were having some fun with this issue!

My thanks to that whippersnapper, Chad Bokelman, for sending this my way! He sent me this info back in March and I’ve been waiting all this time to post it! Thanks Lil’ Chad!

JLA film based upon a story featuring Firestorm?

Information and rumors about the 2015 Justice League movie have started to emerge. One source reported that the “big bad” of the film will be Darkseid. Shortly after that information was released, the same source reported that screenwriter Will Beall was taking his inspiration from the adventure told across Justice League of America #183-185 (published in 1980). If you’ve never read those comics, it’s a huge story featuring the Justice League, the Justice Society, and the evils of Apokolips. The basic plot is Darkseid plans to destroy the Earth by blasting it with a ray that will move Apokolips into the Earth’s place. The story is a LOT more complex, but that’s the boiled down pitch. Long-time Match-heads know this adventure was written by Gerry Conway and included Firestorm! … more after the awesome covers …

Justice League of America #185 cover by Jim Starlin and Bob Smith

Now let’s take a step back and think about the big picture. I’ve been speculating on what might make up the first Justice League film and Firestorm’s potential involvement…

First, is it likely that Firestorm will appear in the first Justice League feature film? Probably not. Seems logical they would focus on the core JLA members, such as: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, and maybe throw in Aquaman and Cyborg. Beyond that, I doubt we’ll see any further JLA members in the first film.

Second, would they EVER include Firestorm in a feature film? A teenager whose head is on fire and has a complex secret identity? Could be problematic to introduce in a feature film unless he played a very significant part.

Third, I’m questioning whether the film will actually be based upon JLA #183-185. Those issues feature a very complicated story that is steeped with parallel universes, the Justice Society, and much more. Seems to me it would make more sense to base the film on the recent New 52 Justice League relaunch. Justice League #1-6 featured the formation of the League and introduced Darkseid. Those are things the first movie will need to accomplish as well. Those issues were wildly successful from a sales perspective (though opinions vary on quality of story). Finally, factor in that Geoff Johns wrote the New 52 Justice League comic and he’s DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer. His Green Lantern comics influenced that feature film, so it seems feasible his Justice League comics might do the same.

My thanks to Shane Snyder (aka The Yeastfly) for the heads-up on the JLA movie scoop.

So what do you think the plot of the Justice League film will be? Do you think we’ll ever see Firestorm on the silver screen?

Firestorm vs Despero by Joshua Flower

CROSSOVER! Everybody loves a crossover! Today FIRESTORM FAN is teaming up with the blogs representing Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman!

All through December over on THE IDOL-HEAD OF DIABOLU, our good buddy Frank has been running “The December of Despero!” That’s right, everyone’s favorite Martian Manhunter blog has turned the reigns over to one of the vilest JLA villains of all time — Despero! Today we’re going to play along!

Check out the sketchcard below featuring Firestorm battling Despero by Joshua Flowers! You can find this sketch over on Flower’s deviantART account.

Kind of a unique interpretation for both Firestorm and Despero. Despero’s madness is captured nicely, but something about Firestorm’s face is hard for me to accept. Perhaps it’s the teeth or the angry expression. Ignoring Firestorm’s face, I think this is a great drawing! Interesting perspective, great coloring, and dynamic action! Good stuff!

As we continue our Despero crossover… wait, what was that? … that can’t be right … seriously?!?! … Okay folks, I’ve been informed that apparently today Frank isn’t featuring Despero during his own “The December of Despero” crossover. … Just great. Thanks, Frank. … Instead we’re focusing on the artwork of Joshua Flower. With that now settled, here is another great Joshua Flower Firestorm sketch! You can also find this sketch card on Joshua Flower’s deviantART account.

This time around we have Jason battling two armored dudes. Not sure if those armored guys represent soldiers, robots, DOLLIES, or possibly even Multiplex (in his original uniform). Whoever Firestorm is battling, it sure looks great! I think I prefer this card to the one at the top.

As mentioned, we’ve crossed over with a few different blogs today! My thanks to Diabolu Frank for suggesting and coordinating today’s cool posts! While I’m featuring Firestorm here on my site, you should visit these other character-specific blogs to see how they spotlight their own favorite heroes today. FURY OF FIRESTORM #18 and JUSTICE LEAGUE #18 Solicitations

Last Friday DC Comics released the solicitation for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #18 shipping in March 2013! I gotta tell ya, I was really excited by the solicitation. I had sort of convinced myself the solicitation for issue #18 would contain the dreaded words, “FINAL ISSUE”. So when the solicitation was released, I was ecstatic! Not only is the series continuing beyond issue #18, this issue features the return of a classic Firestorm rogue — Multiplex! As you  may recall, Multiplex recently appeared in a back-up story in Justice League #13. I’m looking forward to finding out more about this new incarnation of The Duplicate Villain! Check out the excellent cover below for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #18 penciled by Dan Jurgens and inked by Ray McCarthy! I really dig the use of Multiplex’s chest emblem to frame the cover; conveys a sense of cross-hairs too!

Here is the solicitation:

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MAN #18

On sale MARCH 27 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
• Introducing the all-new Multiplex!
• Now that Ronnie and Jason can become one as Firestorm, can they defeat a villain who can create an army of himself?

In addition to Fury of Firestorm #18, our favorite Nuclear Man appears on another cover in March — Justice League #18! Check out the bottom left-hand corner of the cover below by Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, and Rod Reis (or as my buddy Aqua-rob from The Aquaman Shrine calls them, “The Boys”). If I understand correctly, this cover is suggesting that some of these folks will make up the reorganized Justice League team. Seems likely that Element Woman will make the cut based upon preview art and her history with Geoff Johns. Let’s hope Firestorm makes the team too!

My thanks to Match-heads Jason Pope, Sean Koury, Keith G. Baker, and Oscar Olalde for the heads-up about these solicitations! Thanks guys!
