First Firestorm Fan Letter (1977) and “Robby” Raymond

Today we’re looking at the very first piece of fan mail ever received by DC Comics about Firestorm! Comics reader Mitch Senft holds the distinction of having the first published letter about the Nuclear Man. Mitch’s letter was very honest and pointed out some highlights of the book and some concerns he had with the character. Check out the letter’s page below from Firestorm vol. I #2 (Apr. 1978). As noted in the letter column, the letter was received in October 1977, more than a month before the first issue hit the stands!

Also worth noting, last week we published a promotional piece from Nov. 1977 hyping the upcoming release of Firestorm #1. In that article, Professor Martin Stein is referred to as “Charles” Stein. Well, turns out Martin wasn’t the only one back then with an Identity Crisis (yes, pun intended). Throughout the letter column below Ronnie Raymond is referred to as “Robby” Raymond. I can understand the fan letter misidentifying him as “Robby”, but editor Jack C. Harris too? Makes you wonder if this was simply an error, or if the character was actually named “Robby” at some point prior to the release of the first issue (a possibility Gerry Conway recently suggested).

Check out the letters page below. Click to enlarge!

Firestorm #2 letter column featuring Robby Raymond

Not sure how the mix-up occurred with Ronnie’s name, but certainly makes for an interesting time capsule.

I recently contacted the letter writer above, Mitch Senft, and asked for any additional feedback on his encounter with the first issue prior to publication. He responded with:

About all I remember was being at a small convention around Ithaca where Milgrom and Nasser/Netzer appeared. Milgrom had a B&W copy of Firestorm #1, and I was intrigued, intrigued enough to send off a LoC [letter of comment] — which is something I did few enough times to count on the fingers of one hand. The book came out, you might note, during the brief time Gerry Conway was editing at DC. Can’t remember if this was immediately before or after his eight minutes as Marvel EIC [Editor-in-Chief]. In any case, part of his job, I believe, was to create a bunch of books that were Marvel-like — of which Firestorm was very clearly one.

My thanks to Mitch for responding to my request and providing feedback on a letter he wrote over 35 years ago! Thanks, Mitch! Also, my thanks to fellow blogger Anj for digging up this letter and sending me a scan! You can check out Anj’s fantastic Supergirl blog by clicking here!

Who will the JLA choose to take on Firestorm?

First, be sure to pick up Justice League #20 if you haven’t already. It came out a few weeks ago and features some good Firestorm moments. Well worth the time and money for any Match-heads.

Second, I wanted to take a moment to discuss the closing caption box. Check it out below.

Justice League #20 - Firestorm

If you haven’t been reading Justice League of America (JLA), then you need to know this team was assembled with the secret purpose of taking down the Justice League (JL) if ever necessary. Each member of the JLA has been recruited specifically for their ability to take down a specific member of the JL. So the caption box above poses the question, “Who will be chosen by the JLA to take on Firestorm?” Good question. Anyone willing to hazard a guess?

I have a sneaking suspicion it’s … wait for it … Professor Martin Stein. I know, you’re thinking, “Wha- What?!?!” My reason for this is why else was Professor Stein brought back in Fury of Firestorm #20. Prior to that, Professor Stein was dead as far as DC editorial was concerned, and any creators inquiring about bringing him back were shot down (or so the rumor goes). So why bring Professor Stein back in the final issue of Firestorm? I can’t think of any reason other than Geoff Johns wants to use the character in one of his Justice League books.

Anyone else got a theory on the JLA recruit or why Professor Stein was brought back?

Daily Planet Headline: Make Way for Firestorm!

Firestorm made the front page of the Daily Planet! .. Well, sort of.

During the Bronze Age, each issue of DC Comics contained an in-house promotional page called “Daily Planet”. The modern equivalent would be the Channel 52 strips or the DC Comics All Access pages. Each “Daily Planet” included information on upcoming releases and the ever-popular “Answer Man” column. The November 28, 1977 edition prominently featured our favorite Nuclear Man! This would have hit the shelves exactly one week before Firestorm #1 arrived.

Click the image below to enlarge.

DC Comics Daily Planet featuring Firestorm from November 28, 1977

Did you notice the Professor Charles Stein comment above?!??! Believe it or not, this is the second reference to Charles Stein. The first appeared a week prior to this “Daily Planet” edition in an editorial by Jenette Kahn. The editorial appeared November 21, 1977 in Teen Titans #53 (and possibly other comics as well).  Click here to read that editorial.

Either Martin’s name changed sometime prior to the first issue hitting the shelves, or this error just kept popping up. Either way, it’s an interesting peek into the promotional launch for the original series!

I came across this on Count Comics Tumblr, so my thanks to him!

Killer Frost One-Shot Coming in September

This September, Firestorm’s nemesis Killer Frost is getting her own one-shot! It’s part of the DC Comics’ “Villain’s Month”! Click here for more information on “Villain’s Month”.

The Killer Frost issue is one of the books “replacing” the Justice League of America title (JLA) in September. The comic will feature a story written by Sterling Gates, art by Derlis Santacruz, and a cover by Tony S. Daniel and Matt Banning. Interesting that she’s replacing JLA since Firestorm is part of the main Justice League title (JL). Why is her book connected to JLA and not JL? I wonder if the decision is related to whoever will be chosen by the JLA to take on Firestorm (as mentioned in JL #20). Looking forward to finding out!

Below you’ll find the cover and solicitation to Justice League of America #7.2: Killer Frost. Click the image to enlarge. For the announcement, check out this article.

Justice League of America #7.2 Killer Frost cover by Tony S. Daniel and Matt Banning

Here is the solicitation:

Not every villain is grateful to the Secret Society for ridding the world of the Justice League. For Killer Frost, only one thing matters: feeding off Firestorm’s energy! But with Firestorm gone, a desperate Frost is forced to decide whether she should search for the missing hero or find a new source for her power fixes.

My thanks to fellow Match-heads Brandon LeonardJimmy McGlinchey, and Keith G. Baker for the heads-up on this!

Mustachioed Firestorm by Thom Zahler, Ron Swanson style

Here is a fun commission by Thom Zahler (writer and artist of Love and Capes) done at C2E2 back in April. Love Firestorm and Professor Martin Stein sporting mustachios! When I asked him, “Is that Firestorm with a Commissioner Gordon ‘stache or a Porn ‘stache?”  He responded with, “The full Ron Swanson.”  LOL!

Firestorm Farewell Post-Mortem

Howdy Match-heads! I’m back after some much-needed time off to: mourn the ending of Firestorm vol IV, recharge my batteries, and do some traveling for business & fun. I originally planned to take off a few days, but that turned into nearly two weeks. Thanks for your patience, we now resume normal service.

THANK YOU

I want to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone that participated in the #FirestormFarewell campaign the week of May 22! If you missed it, this was an effort to give Firestorm’s final issue a social media send-off. We suggested that Firestorm fans change their social media avatars to the drawing below by the dastardly creative Luke Daab. This piece of art sums up how many Match-heads felt about the cancellation of this title. Additionally, folks were asked to post using the hashtag #FirestormFarewell.

Firestorm Farewell by Luke Daab

I gotta say, I think the #FirestormFarewell campaign was a huge success! Y’all are simply amazing! Not only did we come together as fans, we also attracted the attention of some comic book and fan press! How cool is that?!?!

Below are the awesome individuals that either adopted Luke Daab’s Firestorm image as their social media avatar, or posted with the hashtag #FirestormFarewell. And these are only the folks I was able to easily identify. I’m sure I missed some people, and to those folks I apologize.  We’ve got here a list that represents over 100 unique individuals! That’s roughly 1% of the total readership for the Fury of Firestorm series. While that may not sound like a lot, you try herding this many cats into doing the same thing on the same day!
