Holiday Break

I’m gonna take a few days off from blogging due to the holidays and some painful deadlines at work. I’ll see you in a few days! Meanwhile, check out Jason and Gehenna at the JLA Christmas party from the 2008 DC Universe Holiday Special.  Story by Alan Burnett with art by Kevin Maguire.

In this first panel, Jason gets busted by Dick Grayson (a.k.a. Night-Stick-in-the-Mud-Wing) for trying to liven up the party.

In this next panel, Jason keeps the fun going by using his atomic restructuring powers to play DJ!  And he’s apparently got a special message just for me!  Seriously folks, this is an unaltered panel.

Thanks, Jason! You know I’m rockin’ it! … and is that Wonder Woman grinding on the Shaggy Man?!?!? That’s some wild party!

Fury of Firestorm #4 Teaser by Yildiray Cinar

Yildiray Cinar, Fury of Firestorm artist, posted a mysterious new teaser image promoting issue #4! The image shows a person bent over, but we’re left wondering if they are on fire, or perhaps they’re made of stone or ash? The curiosity is getting to me! Looking forward to The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #4 in stores one week from today, December 28, 2011!

This image is similar to the previous teasers for issues #1, #2, and #3.

To keep the excitement going, below are some images of Helix from issue #3 by Yildiray Cinar! These are the uncolored drawings, done with pencil, ink, and marker. I’m sure I sound like a broken record, but I love this artwork! Yildiray’s art is dynamic, clean, and has a really neat painterly look! And WOW, Helix is friggin’ huge and imposing! Great job, Yildiray!

Jenette Kahn talks about Firestorm’s creation

Today we’re piloting the Wayback Machine to November 21, 1977, exactly two weeks before the first appearance of our favorite Nuclear Man in Firestorm #1.  On this fortnight before Firestorm’s debut, Teen Titans #53 hit the stands.  This particular issue is probably best known for featuring the end of the original Teen Titans.  However, also worth noting in this comic was an interesting editorial (or in this case “Publishorial”) from Jenette Kahn, the Publisher of DC Comics at the time.

In this article, Jenette reveals quite a bit about the soon-to-appear Firestorm, as well as his alter-egos Ronnie Raymond and Professor Charles (?!?!) Stein.  She then goes on to explain the creative process in developing new characters.  It’s a very interesting piece and was probably very enlightening for the fans at the time.  Click the image below to enlarge the article to readable size.

Thanks to my FIRE AND WATER PODCAST co-host Rob Kelly for sending me this scan!  I’d never even heard of this editorial prior to Rob sending it my way.  Thanks, Rob!

Unusual Suspects: Darkseid versus Firestorm

When you think of Firestorm foes, characters that typically come to mind include: Killer Frost, Multiplex, Hyena, Typhoon, Plastique, Deathstorm, or maybe even Slipknot.  However, in Firestorm’s 34 years he’s faced quite a few other foes.  Today we’re starting a new semi-regular feature looking at some of Firestorm’s more unusual opponents.  Welcome to the first installment of what I like to call — UNUSUAL SUSPECTS!

Right out of the gate I wanted to tackle one of DC’s biggest, baddest villains of all – DARKSEID!  Believe it or not, Firestorm has gone toe-to-toe with Darkseid on a few occasions and somehow managed to survive!

First up is a scene from Justice League of America #185 (Dec 1980) written by Gerry Conway and drawn by George Perez & Frank McLaughlin.  In this scene Firestorm gives Darkseid a taste of his own medicine!

Now admittedly, the comic above was published back before Darkseid was THE big bad of the DC Universe.  Nowadays, Firestorm probably wouldn’t be able to pull off such a simple stunt against Darkseid.  In fact, the next time Firestorm was face-to-face with Darkseid, things went very differently.  Below is a scene from Firestorm the Nuclear Man vol III #35 (June 2007) written by Dwayne McDuffie and drawn by Pop Mhan & Steve Bird.

Yeah, that’s right.  Darkseid just showed up and literally ripped Firestorm apart.  Wow.  That’s serious power!

Let’s tally up the two battles… looks like the final scores between Firestorm and Darkseid were: One victory each!  I don’t know about you, but I’d gladly accept a tie with Darkseid.  Heck, I’d gladly accept just surviving against Darkseid!

Watch for more UNUSUAL SUSPECTS in the weeks to come!

November Comic Sales Figures

DC Comics The New 52 continued to dominate the comic sales charts in November 2011! For sales through Diamond Comic Distributors, DC Comics held the top four sales spots, and 13 of the top 20 spots. Admittedly, the comics market is beginning to stabilize after the previous two white-hot months with DC Comics far in the lead.

Not surprisingly, we’re going to focus on The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #3. In November our favorite Nuclear Men occupied the 78th sales spot with 28,489 units sold. Of DC’s The New 52 issues, Fury of Firestorm #3 landed as the 38th book in units sold.

In September, Fury of Firestorm #1 (first printing) occupied the 46th sales spot with 46,383 units sold. Of DC’s The New 52 issues, Fury of Firestorm #1 landed as the 30th book in units sold.  The second printing of Fury of Firestorm #1 sold an additional 10,539 copies, for a grand total of 56,922.

In October, Fury of Firestorm #2 occupied the 54th sales spot with 39,591 units sold. Of DC’s The New 52 issues, Fury of Firestorm #2 landed as the 34th book in units sold.

While numbers have certainly slipped since September, Fury of Firestorm #3 still out-performed lots of other successful books such as: Punisher, Hulk, X-Factor, Avengers Academy, Thunderbolts, and many more. Also, just think how good these rankings would look if they included the digital sales! Overall, I still think Fury of Firestorm is performing well. Below you’ll find the top 100 selling comics in October from The Comic Chronicles.

Here is the solicitation:

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN #7

Art and cover by ETHAN VAN SCIVER
On sale MARCH 28 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

New co-writer Joe Harris (Ghost Projekt) joins Ethan Van Sciver in this white-hot jumping-on issue! Plus: Van Sciver provides interior art for what’s sure to be one of the most talked-about comics of the year! As the fallout from the recent rogue Firestorm attack spreads and threatens to bring down Zither-Tech and the Firestorm Protocols, Ronnie Raymond pursues the Russian Nuclear Man Pozhar on what may well turn out to be a suicide mission. Meanwhile, Jason Rusch is made an offer he can’t refuse. Separated in an evolving game of international atomic brinkmanship, each Firestorm faces a world more dangerous than he ever imagined… while one gets a life-altering shock you’ll never forget!

Man, this issue sounds like it’s going to be amazing! A new writer with great ideas and Ethan drawing two entire issues?!?!?  A winning combination!  Don’t get me wrong, I’m still enjoying the current issues with Gail Simone, Ethan Van Sciver, and Yildiray Cinar.  I’m just getting excited for what’s coming too!

If you haven’t read them already, there are two great interviews with new writer Joe Harris about Firestorm.  Click here for the Newsarama interview Joe did with Ethan Van Sciver, and click here for the Comic Book Resources interview Joe did on his own.  Great stuff!

My thanks to Brandon Leonard and Corey Hodgdon for the heads-up on this solicitation!
