Animated Anthem Day Crossover – Firestorm!

CROSSOVER! Everybody loves a crossover! Fifteen different blogs have combined forces today to celebrate Animated Anthem Day! We’re featuring opening themes from cartoons involving our favorite DC Comics’ characters! Now before you go checking your local Hallmark shop for Animated Anthem Day cards, the answer is “yes” we made it up. That doesn’t make it any less legitimate. While we’ll be looking at Firestorm here, every other blog in the crossover will cover their own relevant cartoon opening themes.

To represent Firestorm, we’re going to look at the opening credits for two different seasons of the seminal series Super Friends!

Superfriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

In 1984, the Super Friends cartoon was rebranded as Superfriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. With this change, they introduced Firestorm! As you can see, he’s heavily featured in the opening credits. He’s really the only team member to ever get that kind of attention in the opening credits!

The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians

The next season, the cartoon was rebranded again as The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians. I’m guessing the rebranding was an effort to align themselves with the “Super Powers Collection” brand being developed by DC Comics.

Man, I love me some Super Friends! I’ve got copies of some of these episodes I watch from time to time with my kids. My six-year old daughter is pretty confident she knows everything there is to know about Firestorm because she’s seen him in these cartoons.  :)

Animated Anthem Day Links

Hope you enjoyed the cartoon intros! As mentioned, fifteen different blogs have teamed-up today for Animated Anthem Day! While I’m featuring Firestorm here on my site, you should visit these other character-specific blogs to see how they spotlight their own favorite heroes in animation today. Visit them now, visit them later, and visit them often!

My thanks to Diabolu Frank for organizing today’s crossover event! If you’ve enjoyed this blog crossover, then you should check out some previous comic blog crossovers we’ve done. The first major blog crossover celebrated the gorgeous George Pérez/Alex Ross painting from the Crisis on Infinite Earths 1998 hardcover. The next major blog crossover was a celebration of the Super Powers Collection’s 25th Anniversary. Some subsequent major crossovers included: DC Challenge, Read This Too, Mayfairstivus, April Fool’s Day 2011, and Blackest Night to Brightest Day.

NEWS: FIRESTORM’S COSTUME CHANGE AND MORE VAN SCIVER ART

Yesterday on Facebook, Ethan Van Sciver posted the following comments:

Ethan Van Sciver
My window is open, my desk fan is providing a nice summery breeze, and I’m cranking the best of David Bowie. Drawing Ronnie Raymond’s new costume. This is the life.

I’m thinking about drawing another issue of FIRESTORM. I really had fun with 7 and 8. I could do 11 or 12…?

Joe Harris is writing these awesome scripts. I always want to draw them.

A new costume for Ronnie?!?! More issues drawn by Ethan?!?!  How cool is that!?!?! Nothing is official from DC Comics yet, but I’d say Ethan is a fairly credible source. :)

NEWS: JOE HARRIS AND ETHAN VAN SCIVER DISCUSS FIRESTORM

Have been a Firestorm fan since I was a kid and this is the best take on the character ever …..you rule EVS!!!!

Such great feedback from a bunch of great match-heads! Now to be completely fair and honest, I have also seen a few lukewarm comments about issue #7. However, those moderate reviews seem to be the minority. Overall I think Ethan Van Sciver, Joe Harris, Hi-Fi Colour Design, and DC Comics should be really happy with the fans reaction!

Final Colors for FURY OF FIRESTORM #10 Cover

A few weeks ago, DC Comics released the cover to The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #10 shipping in June. This cover was penciled by Yildiray Cinar and inked by Ethan Van Sciver. While Yildiray has drawn the majority of interiors for the book, this is his first cover! When the cover was unveiled the coloring wasn’t complete so they used placeholder colors. Well, Hi-Fi Colour Design has finished their work! Check out this gorgeous cover! You can also find it on Yildiray Cinar’s deviantART page.

Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #10 cover by Yildiray Cinar and Ethan Van Sciver

Yildiray and Ethan’s artwork looked fantastic before, but now with Hi-Fi’s expert coloring this cover pops even more! I love Rakshasa’s look! Her flaming arms are very reminiscent of Shiva and I love the Firestorm belly shirt! For information on the mythological beings called Rakshasa in Hindu and Buddhist religion, check out Wikipedia.

Congrats to Yildiray on his first Fury of Firestorm cover! It’s a beautiful work of art!

My thanks to our good friend Brandon Di Perno for the heads-up on this colored image. Thanks, Brandon!

How Ronnie Joined and Quit The Power Company – 2003

Today we conclude our coverage of TEAM WEEK! Since his days of playing high school basketball, Ronnie Raymond has been a team player. Perhaps that is why he’s joined so many superhero teams! This week we’re looking at several of the teams he’s joined since becoming Firestorm!

Yesterday we examined how Firestorm re-joined the JLA in 2002. Well, it turns out that while he was a member of the JLA, he was also moonlighting as a member of The Power Company! If you are unfamiliar with The Power Company, it was a team of professional superheroes-for-hire. They were structured in many ways like a law firm, including partners and associates. The team was created for DC Comics by writer Kurt Busiek and artist Tom Grummett. Two of my favorite creators in comics! I was sooooo excited when I heard Firestorm would be appearing in this book.

There is an interesting real-world story about Firestorm joining this comic. In an effort to promote some upcoming changes in The Power Company, a promotional campaign was launched entitled “Power Boost”. This campaign included giveaways of art, signed comics, and more. Since one of the upcoming events in the book was a surprise new member for the team, DC launched a poll on their website asking readers who they’d most like to see join the team. The choices were Batgirl, Booster Gold, Firestorm, Superboy, and the Haunted Tank. The poll made it clear that the new member had already been decided, but Busiek and Grummett promised that if someone other than their choice won the poll, the winner would at the very least make a guest-appearance in the pages of The Power Company. The poll received a total of 78,710 votes. Haunted Tank was the winner with 18,585, followed by Firestorm with 17,972, Booster Gold with 15,636, Batgirl with 14,644 and Superboy with 11,873. Firestorm was the character Busiek and Grummett had previously decided on as the new addition to the team. In fact, they added Haunted Tank to the poll just for fun. Who would have guessed Haunted Tank would win the poll! So in addition to Firestorm appearing in the series, they honored their promise and found a way to incorporate a modern-day version of the Haunted Tank in the book! My thanks to Comics Continuum for all the details on this poll.

So the most important thing to take away from the results of that poll is that Firestorm received more votes than Booster Gold. Isn’t that right, Walter? :)

Below you’ll find the final panel from The Power Company #10 (Jan. 2003) by Kurt Busiek, Tom Grummett, and Prentis Rollins.

The Power Company #11 (Feb. 2003) by Kurt Busiek, Tom Grummett, and Prentis Rollins picked up the story with our favorite Nuclear Man hogging most of the limelight!

Below Firestorm makes a dramatic entrance, helping some Power Company teammates caught in a brawl. Love that Tom Grummett Firestorm!!!!

Later during a press conference, The Power Company introduces their newest member! And we see Firestorm’s true reasons for joining the team.

Just a few months later, Firestorm called it quits with The Power Company. I’m not sure what drove the creative decision for Firestorm to leave the team. Perhaps it was because The Power Company was ending in just a few issues. Perhaps it was because at the time DC Comics was planning a new ongoing series for Ronnie Raymond. Either way, Firestorm resigned in The Power Company #16 (July 2003) by Kurt Busiek, Tom Grummett, Prentis Rollins, and Al Vey.

How Ronnie Re-Joined the JLA – 2002

TEAM WEEK continues here at FIRESTORM FAN! Since his days of playing high school basketball, Ronnie Raymond has been a team player. Perhaps that is why he’s joined so many superhero teams! This week we’re looking at several of the teams he’s joined since becoming Firestorm!

In 2002, after 18 years away, Firestorm finally re-joined the JLA! Sure he’d joined Extreme Justice and Justice League Europe, but this is the JLA… the Big Leagues! This is where Ronnie belonged!

In the storyline “The Obsidian Age”, the JLA were transported to the distant past. This left the Earth sorely under-protected. Prior to this Batman had put in place some automatic protocols if such an event were ever to occur (of course he had a contingency plan, he’s Batman). This led to the formation of a new Justice League in JLA #69 (Oct. 2002) by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst.

JLA #69 cover by Doug Mahnke and Tom Nguyen

The issue started by showing numerous emergencies with everyone asking where was the Justice League. Next we saw the scene below on the Watchtower…

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

Next we saw several of the new members being recruited.

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

Apparently Ronnie’s bout with alcoholism wasn’t enough to deter him completely from the occasional drink. Next we return to the Watchtower, the previous scene already in progress…

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

JLA #69 by Joe Kelly, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst

And with that, Firestorm was back in the Justice League! Hooray! Once “The Obsidian Age” concluded and the regular JLA members returned, Firestorm remained a member of the team. He was active with the team for about a year. Technically he never quit this incarnation of the team, he just appeared less and less. The beginning of the end was in JLA #84 (Oct. 2003), “Trial By Fire – Part 1″, by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen.

JLA #84 by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen

JLA #84 by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen

What an ending!!! Near as I can figure this cliffhanger was supposed to launch a brand-new ongoing series for Firestorm, but it was canceled before the first issue ever got published. So instead the creative team on JLA worked this into their own story. Up next are the follow-up pages from JLA #85 (Oct. 2003), “Trial By Fire – Part 2″, by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen.

JLA #85 by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen

JLA #85 by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen

Very cool scenes! That rescue by Superman was awesome! I also love Batman acknowledging that Ronnie is still a member of the team, powers or no powers. Firestorm may have been injured, but those are some really nice JLA moments for him. Ronnie sat out the rest of the “Trial By Fire” crossover, only appearing in one panel at the end in JLA #89 (Dec. 2003) by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen.

JLA #89 by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen

After that Firestorm made only a handful of appearances with the JLA, all of which were minor appearances. Technically he was still a member of the team, but we never really saw much of him anymore. Around this same time he appeared in a few issues of Power Company. Beyond that, the next major appearance for Ronnie Raymond was in Identity Crisis, and we all know how that ended for him.

How Ronnie Joined Justice League Europe – 1998

TEAM WEEK continues here at FIRESTORM FAN! Since his days of playing high school basketball, Ronnie Raymond has been a team player. Perhaps that is why he’s joined so many superhero teams! This week we’re looking at several of the teams he’s joined since becoming Firestorm!

As an alumni of the Justice League of America and Extreme Justice, what’s a Nuclear guy to do? Well, apparently you join a start-up Justice League Europe. Below is the cover to Starman #38 (Jan. 1998) by Tony Harris and Dusty Abell.

Starman #38 cover by Tony Harris

The issue itself was written by James Robinson, with art by Dusty Abell, Dexter Vines, and Norman Lee. In the story Crimson Fox assembled a group of heroes to form a new French version of the Justice League. Their plan was to prove themselves in France and branch out across all of Europe.

Starman #38 by James Robinson, Dusty Abell, and Dexter Vines

Next, some of the team members grumbled about this new team not being very prestigious. During this, Ice Maiden was kind enough to pay Firestorm a compliment.

Starman #38 by James Robinson, Dusty Abell, and Dexter Vines

Up next was a nice moment between two of my absolute favorite characters – Firestorm and Blue Devil!

Starman #38 by James Robinson, Dusty Abell, and Dexter Vines

Suddenly a crisis arose across town which required Firestorm’s abilities.

Starman #38 by James Robinson, Dusty Abell, and Norman Lee

While Firestorm was gone, The Mist (a Starman foe) murdered the rest of the fledgling Justice League Europe. Yes, she murdered the entire team (with the exception of Firestorm)! Apparently The Mist wanted to be absolutely sure everyone was dead. So when Firestorm returned…
