Fan Visions of Firestorm Animated and Redesigned

A hallmark of being a fanboy is reimagining your favorite heroes. The internet is littered with fan redesigns of superheroes. Some are amazingly creative, some not so much. Today we’re celebrating those brave fans who put their redesigns out there for us to enjoy!

Many fans had hopes that Firestorm would make an appearance in one of DC’s animated series (i.e. Superman, Justice League, etc). Below you’ll find a few animated designs by fans: (L to R): By Warhawk; unknown artist; and by BatFriend514

These next few are fan reimaginings from the Superbuddies.net forum.
This first one is by Jor-El for his “Project: Justice.”

There are people with no artistic ability who also want to reimagine their favorite characters. Back in 2001 a cool program came along called HeroMachine (version 1.0). This program allowed fans to design superhero costumes, although the options were pretty limited in the early editions of the program. It was super fun and I’d spend hours designing different costumes! Below is a Firestorm redesign by Match-head, Ed “The Unique Geek”!

Lastly, I did a redesign myself back in 2001 using HeroMachine 1.0 which you can find below. Not exactly a design I’m proud of nowadays, but I made it — so I gotta own up to it. I can only guess I was heavily influenced by Superboy’s 1990s costume.

Ethan Van Sciver Original Firestorm Artwork

With Ethan Van Sciver leaving the Fury of Firestorm series, I thought today we’d look back at some of his astonishing original artwork from issues #7 & #8! Seeing these in black & white, without word balloons, allows you to enjoy the masterful artwork even more.

If you’re really a fan of Ethan’s Fury of Firestorm artwork, you should check out a particular post he made on Facebook back on Tuesday, May 15. Say, oh I don’t know, around 6:34pm. I just sayin’, might be worth checking out. My thanks to Keith G. Baker for the heads-up on this.

Finally, if you’re in the Michigan area this weekend, visit with Ethan at the Motor City Comic Con! Be sure to tell him how much you enjoyed his Firestorm work! Also, tell him FIRESTORM FAN sent you!

Now, on with the gorgeous art! All of this artwork was published previously either by DC Comics or on Ethan’s Facebook. In fact, on several of these you can still see the blue lines.

Yildiray Cinar’s Sketches of the International Firestorms

Recently I’ve been posting some sketches here from Fury of Firestorm artist Yildiray Cinar. Today we’re going to look at some more sketches, this time of the international Firestorms! Luckily for us, Yildiray has been kind enough to post his beautiful sketches on Twitter and Tumblr. Thanks, Yildiray!

Below is a character study of Firehawk, the French Firestorm, posted to Yildiray’s Tumblr! I really dig the hair and wings!

Below is another Pozhar sketch! This one was done as a warm-up exercise and posted to Tumblr.

Finally, not an international Firestorm, but still a gorgeous drawing with an international flavor – Justice League International! Yildiray drew this as a warm-up to prepare for the Firestorm/JLI crossover and posted it to Tumblr.

Looking to the future with FURY OF FIRESTORM #12

Yesterday DC Comics released the solicitation for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #12 shipping in August! Check out the fantastic cover below by Yildiray Cinar, Marlo Alquiza, and Hi-Fi! Looks like Ronnie & Jason are in trouble! Click the image to enlarge.

Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #12 cover by Yildiray Cinar and Marlo Alquiza

Here is the solicitation from DC Comics:

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN #12
Written by JOE HARRIS
Art and cover by YILDIRAY CINAR and MARLO ALQUIZA
On sale AUGUST 22 | 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US | RATED T

  • The quest for ASHRA KHAN takes a new turn!
  • The menace of ZITHER is revealed!

I noticed a few things from reading this solicitation:

  1. It appears by issue #12 Ronnie and Jason will be together again (cue the Muppet song, “Together again”).
  2. Ronnie is back in his original costume, not the “secondary power costume” we saw on the cover of issue #11.
  3. Ethan Van Sciver’s name is off the book and Joe Harris is flying solo.
  4. Yildiray Cinar will be working with a new inker, Marlo Alquiza.
  5. Hi-Fi was mentioned as the colorist on the cover. I asked Hi-Fi over on Facebook if they will be coloring the interiors of issue #12. They responded with, “We are coloring issue #10 right now. Would love to keep coloring Firestorm as long as the rest of the creative team and fans want Hi-Fi around.” Alright Match-heads, let’s tell DC Comics that we want Hi-Fi to continue coloring Fury of Firestorm! Spread the word!
  6. That cover is friggin’ awesome. LOVE IT!

I’m really looking forward to Joe Harris, Yildiray Cinar, and Hi-Fi on Fury of Firestorm! We’ve got another week until issue #9 hits the stands. Arrrggghhh, the wait is killing me!

Interview with Gerry Conway – FIRE AND WATER Episode 19

Firestorm and Aquaman: The Fire and Water PodcastThe 19th episode of THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST is now available for your listening pleasure! THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST is the official podcast of FIRESTORM FAN and THE AQUAMAN SHRINE.

This episode we’re dipping into the vault, presenting an interview from 2009 with the legendary Gerry Conway, co-creator of the Firestorm The Nuclear Man! Gerry Conway was one of the most prolific comic book writers of the 1970s and 80s. His writing credits go on for miles! He’s probably best known for co-creating the Punisher and scripting the death of Gwen Stacy in the Amazing Spider-Man. He also wrote for and produced such TV series as Law & Order and Diagnosis Murder. Back in 1977, Gerry created Firestorm the Nuclear Man along with artist Al Milgrom. Gerry continued to write the character of Firestorm for about nine years. During the interview we cover Firestorm’s creation, artists, the writing process, creator rights, the DC Implosion, merchandise, where the character has journeyed since his involvement, and much more!

Multiplex RPG Stats from DC ADVENTURES by Green Ronin

Last week Green Ronin Publishing released the newest book for the DC Adventures role-playing game — DC Adventures Heroes & Villains, Vol. 2!  This particular volume includes RPG statistics for everyone’s favorite fissioning dastardly dog, Multiplex! Dude, I love this character! Sometimes he’s clever, sometimes he’s ridiculous, but he always makes a great foil for Firestorm! Seriously, he was Firestorm’s first supervillain and they share an origin. He’s essentially a “dark mirror” of Firestorm. That’s a formula for the perfect arch-nemesis!

Below you’ll find the statistics for Multiplex from Green Ronin’s DC Adventures Heroes & Villains, Vol. 2:

Multiplex from Green Ronin's DC Adventures Heroes and Villains vol 2

Multiplex from Green Ronin's DC Adventures Heroes and Villains vol 2I love this book! It’s over 300 full-color pages packed with information and beautiful illustrations culled from years of DC comics. It should be noted that statistics included are based upon the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe. For me this book is a melding of two great worlds – DC Comics and Mutants & Masterminds. I’ve been an avid reader of DC Comics for over 25 years, I’ve previously role-played the Mayfair Games’ DC Heroes RPG & West End Games’ DC Universe RPG, and finally I role-played the Mutants & Masterminds system for about three years. So for me DC Comics and Mutants & Masterminds are two great tastes that taste great together!

Green Ronin's DC Adventures Heroes and Villains vol 2

Here is the description of the book from the Green Ronin website:

The DC Universe features a dazzling array of characters who have thrilled readers for generations. The two-volume Heroes & Villains set details more than 500 of those characters for use in your DC Adventures games, all featuring character stats fully compatible with the award-winning Mutants & Masterminds RPG. Vol. 2 picks up where Vol. 1 left off, covering characters from the League of Assassins and Legion of Super-Heroes to Zatanna and Zauriel. With Heroes & Villains in-hand, you will never lack for characters to use in your game, from heroic guest-stars and villainous foes to heroes suitable as ready-to-play characters. You’ll also have a comprehensive guide for modeling your own DC characters based on existing examples along with a collection of animals and monsters useful for mimics and shapechangers. It’s the comprehensive guide to the heroes and villains of the DC Universe no fan should be without!

Order your own copy from your local comic book shop! Alternatively, order a copy through the Green Ronin Publishing online catalog. The website still says “Pre-Order”, but the book has been released.
