New Gerry Conway Firestorm Comic Announced for March!

Last Friday DC announced an upcoming anthology comic series featuring Firestorm! That’s right! Firestorm is back in comics… and being written by Gerry Conway!

Legends of Tomorrow #1 (shipping in March) is an 80-page anthology comic featuring four different stories! Below you’ll find the cover to the issue by Aaron Lopresti! Click here for the official announcement! More details and discussion below the cover!Legends of Tomorrow #1 comic cover with Firestorm by Aaron Lopresti

Issue #1 will feature Firestorm, Metamorpho, the Metal Men, and Sugar & Spike! Here is the Firestorm blurb:

FIRESTORM, written by Gerry Conway with art by Eduardo Pansica and Rob Hunter:
Firestorm is back! To save Jason Rusch, Firestorm will need to retrieve Danton Black’s stolen research from Professor Stein’s lab. But if Jason can’t fuse with Ronnie by the Firestorm Protocol…who can?

Legends of Tomorrow #1 will be on sale March 9th, 2016 with 80 pages for $7.99.

With the official news out of the way, let’s discuss certain aspects of this…

  • While I’m thrilled Firestorm is returning to comics, I do feel a bit cheated. Back in July 2015, DC announced a new Firestorm six issue limited series written by Gerry Conway. So instead of Firestorm headlining his own limited series, he’s sharing with three other features. It’s an 80-page comic with four stories. Doing the math suggests each feature could get 20 pages to themselves. That’s equivalent of a stand alone comic, so at least we’ll get a full issue’s worth of Firestorm.
  • Some folks have expressed concerns over the price tag of $7.99. Again, doing the math, that’s only $2 per feature. That’s a pretty good savings compared to stand alone comics (typically $3.99 nowadays). However, I’m not sure $7.99 is sustainable on a monthly basis.
  • The big question is how many issues will feature Firestorm. Since we were originally promised a six issue limited series, will Firestorm be featured in the first six issues of the Legends of Tomorrow comic? Or will they shorten his story so it takes up less issues?
  • The comic is called Legends of Tomorrow, clearly trying to capitalize on the TV series of the same name. However, Firestorm is the only character to appear in both the TV series and the comic. Will other Legends TV characters appear in the comic? If so, how will that impact each feature’s run? Each of these features was originally promised a six issue mini-series. Who will get six issues of Legends to tell their story, and who will have less time?

First and foremost, great news that Firestorm is back in comics and being written by Gerry Conway! Can’t wait!

Second, we have questions. I sure hope DC provides some answers soon.

A Match Made in (Geek) Heaven

Congratulations to Brandon & Annalyssa on their engagement! Brandon has been a long-time supporter of FIRESTORM FAN. Check out their super-awesome engagement photo! Notice what Brandon is reading…

Brandon Rouge and Annalyssa

When I saw this photo, I begged Brandon to let me post it here along with his commentary. Take it way, Brandon!

Hey Shagg, thank you for offering to post my story! I find it quite comical that everyone always told me that if I keep reading all these comics, playing these video games, and watching all that TV you’re going to die alone. Boy did I get to prove them wrong! At first Annalyssa (my fiancée) was not crazy about my hobbies but she grew to love them (not as much as myself I’m sure). The one thing that really clicked with her as far as my addictions was Doctor Who. I got her hook line and sinker with that one, so much so that I actually proposed to her in front of Matt Smith himself (and the other 2,000 people at the panel)! It was nerve racking but she said yes, would have been a long walk out of the convention center if she hadn’t. Her favourite superhero is Spider-Man and mine is well… obvious. After all of my obsessions she still agreed to take our engagement pictures in a comic book store, dream come true. This is one of the photos that our photographer Manifesto Photography had taken, they were great. Anyways I had rambled on long enough, Thank you for my ten minutes of fame!

Such a great story! I’m so happy for Brandon and Annalyssa. She likes comics and Doctor Who?!? Better hold on to her tight, Brandon! She sounds like a keeper! I guess you could say it’s a match(head) made in heaven!

Franz Drameh appears to be doing a great job with the role! Looking forward to more of his Firestorm!

Can’t wait until January 21st for Legends of Tomorrow? Then get your fix by listening to the Legends of Tomorrow Podcast! They discuss all things related to and leading to the show. They were even kind enough to invite me to discuss Firestorm on episode 8 of their show!

Watch the trailer again below! I can’t count how many times I’ve watched it!!

Just a little speculation, but the TV version of the Firestorm suit seems to be heavily influenced by Jamal Igle’s comic book re-design of the Firestorm suit (Firestorm the Nuclear Man #23 from May 2005). See below. Notice the chest emblem ends with the three smaller circles (representing electrons). Jamal was the first artist to interpret the insignia this way. On the TV costume, notice the yellow piping on the shoulders and gloves. This design element was also introduced by Jamal Igle; notice on the comic version the gloves and boots. Similar piping has been used in subsequent suits, including the New 52 Firestorm costumes. Way to go, Jamal!
