Five Years from now, in New York, Cal/Tim and Ronnie are battling their way through a swarm of Cadmus security guards in an attempt to get to into Columbia University. Ronnie seems impressed by Cal’s “crazy kung-fu”, which leads to Tim revealing himself by complimenting Ronnie’s ability to hold his own even “without your nuclear powers.” Someone has kidnapped Madison Payne and this dynamic duo is out to save her!

The New 52: Futures End #29

At the same time Jason is inside, but being hassled by “the man”… well more Cadmus guards actually. He tries to explain that he’s a student, but they say Dr. Yamazake warned them he might try to interfere. Yamazake is moving ahead with his teleportation tests, which by the way Cadmus is funding. Jason knows this is bad news. He’s come to realize that Dr. Y is a little unstable and needs to be stopped, so he dodges past the guards and into the lab… just in time to see that Madison is about to become a Brundle-Fly! “Firestorm. I feared you were going to show up.” Yes, with no regard for secret identities Dr. Yamazake exposes Jason.

The New 52: Futures End #29

For his part Jason tries once again to point out some errors in the scientists equations, but gets a wrench to the back of the head for his trouble. Madison whines a little, that no one in her life has been honest with her… which, when you’re stuck in a tube about to be teleported by a mad scientist should really be the least of your worries, but maybe that’s just me. Outside Tim/Cal single-handedly holds back the Cadmus guards while Ronnie makes a run into the building, arriving in the lab just as Yamazake throws the switch! Ronnie shoves the scientist out of the way and runs to the teleporter, tearing the door open to release Madison. Caught in the teleportation matrix, Ronnie begins to dissolve. He calls to Jason… to fix this, they must become Firestorm!

The New 52: Futures End #29

As lab equipment begins to explode around them they try to make physical contact, but Ronnie is intangible. “It’s my fault bro. It never should have come to this” he says, “Sorry for the mess I…”

The New 52: Futures End #29

Reaching through Ronnie, Jason grabs Madison as the entire lab explodes around them…then, from the rubble bursts Firestorm! A female Firestorm!

The New 52: Futures End #29

It’s Madison! And in her head, she hears Jason calling for Ronnie…but he doesn’t answer. Tim stumbles through the remains of the lab, and finds Ronnie. Fatally wounded Ronnie says he tried to save Madison, but he was too late. Tim shoulders the blame… if he hadn’t stayed away, hadn’t lost his edge… maybe he could have saved them…

The New 52: Futures End #29

HOLY MACKEREL! That was an action-packed emotional rollercoaster of an issue… and obviously you can see why we couldn’t wait to share it! We got a reunion between Ronnie and Jason, Tim returning to action and (at least for now) ditching the “Cal” identity, and we have a new Firestorm! WOW!

The New 52: Futures End #29

Shag here again! Wow is right, Tim!! Thanks for that coverage! What does this mean for the Nuclear Man… or Nuclear Woman… in present day?!?! We’ll have to wait and see! Tim will be back early next month with his regular coverage of, The New 52: Futures End! Let us know what you think of these developments!

Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Firestorm Joins JLA!

Firestorm joins JLA mentioned in the Daily Planet! … Well, it was mentioned back in 1980.

During the Bronze Age, each issue of DC Comics contained an in-house promotional page called “Daily Planet”. The modern equivalent would be the Channel 52 strips or the DC Comics All Access pages. Typical Daily Planet editions included information on upcoming releases or feature articles. The February 25, 1980 edition appearing in Brave and the Bold #162 announces Firestorm is joining the JLA at the suggestion of Superman. It goes on to explain that Ronnie Raymond, a.k.a. Firestorm the Nuclear Man is the youngest hero ever to join the group. Plus, our hero finds himself in the midst of a crisis involving the Satin Satan! All this and more in Justice League of America #179 on sale March 10, 1980. Also in the Daily Planet you catch a glimpse of the cover to that issue by Jim Starlin. Click the image below to enlarge.

1987 Great Heroes Backing Board Trading Cards

Today’s item is a really neat nostalgic piece. I’d never even heard of these until a few months ago when our buddy Aaron Bias presented these cards to me.

Back in 1987 (and again in 1989), DC Comics printed a very unique set of trading cards. These cards were printed on comic backing boards sold with three-packs of DC comics at large retailers. The 1987 series had six different sheets of 8 cards, making for a set of 48 different cards. The cards were printed directly on the backing boards with dotted lines for kids to cut out. Cards featured “Great Heroes”, “Great Villains”, and “Great Moments in Comics.” Firestorm was included on card #6, appearing on a board along with Cyborg, Flash, Tyr, Man of Steel #1, Detective Comics #38, Captain Atom #1, and The Key. Below is the front and back of Firestorm’s card. The art is typical stock art from that era. We’ve never definitely identified the artists, but our long-held belief is this was most likely pencilled by Denys Cowan and inked by Dick Giordano.

Below is an example of an uncut sheet of cards.

Great Heroes trading cards from 1987

There was a second series of backing board trading cards produced in 1989.  This set consisted of 72 different cards, including one of my favorites, Blue Devil! Just for fun, I’m including the Blue Devil card with art by Paris Cullins!

Given all the Firestorm memorabilia I’ve seen over the years, it’s very exciting to find something entirely new to me! Thanks, Aaron!

Jason Rusch to appear on The Flash!

Just announced yesterday… Jason Rusch will appear on The Flash! Jason will be played by Luc Roderique, known for Supernatural, the recent Godzilla film, and the upcoming pilot episode of iZombie.

Luc Roderique as Jason Rusch on The Flash

According to KSiteTV, Jason Rusch will appear in the show’s tenth episode. Here are the character details on how he’ll fit into the world of The Flash television series:

A graduate student at Hudson University, he was part of Martin Stein’s research team on the F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. project.  In the DC comics, Jason takes over the Firestorm matrix after Ronnie Raymond’s death.

Obvious questions that come to mind are Jason’s relationship to Firestorm on The Flash. We know Firestorm on the show will be composed of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein. Will there be room in there for Jason too? Is he just a supporting character or will he eventually get his own shot at being the Nuclear Man?

For more details, check out KSiteTV or Comic Book Resources (where I found the image above).

So far, The Flash has recruited from the Firestorm-verse: Ronnie Raymond, Professor Martin Stein, Caitlin Snow (Killer Frost), Danton Black (Multiplex), Bette Sans Souci (Plastique), and now Jason Rusch. I’m expecting an announcement any day now that the Zuggernaut and Bazooka Joan will appear on The Flash.

Most importantly, it includes an attachable floating Professor Stein head!! Well, they’ve finally announced the release schedule!

Be advised that once the figure goes on sale on Thursday, November 13, it is subject to “early access sellout”. That means if too many figures are ordered by Matty Collector subscribers, it may not be available to the general public on Monday, November 17. Also, I’ve been advised by some previous Matty Collector members to brace myself for high prices. Some estimates I’ve heard include $30 for the figure and $10 for shipping. That is simply an estimate and not a recommended price or promise of a price (it could be significantly higher or lower — who knows).

There are over 150 playable characters in the game, including our favorite Nuclear Man!
