Super Friends fusion of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Stein

My first encounter with Firestorm was in September 1984 on the cartoon, Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show.  I found him fascinating and immediately ran out and bought some of his comics.

Firestorm on Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show

It’s worth noting there were a few minor differences between “our” Firestorm and the Super Friends Firestorm.  Here is the Super Friends Firestorm origin explained on the SuperFriends Wiki:

High-School student Ronald Raymond, met Professor Martin Stein on the campus of Fairmont University. He would help Professor Stein on many occasions. One night, during an accidental explosion (from a molecular-fusion experiment), Ronald and Professor Stein fuse into one being; Firestorm, the nuclear man! Ronald Raymond had control of Firestorm’s body, while Martin was just a voice in Firestorm’s head.

A fairly close origin, but slightly different.  “Fairmont University”?  Ronnie helped the Professor prior to their becoming Firestorm?  Minor differences, but interesting.

Okay, so the real reason for today’s post is to show off the cool fusion of Professor Stein and Ronnie Raymond into Firestorm!

Firestorm Appearance Today in Superman/Batman #84

Firestorm, albeit a bizarre alternate reality incarnation, is set to appear today in Superman/Batman #84.  Here is the solicit from DC Comics:

Superman must help the JLA of the future – Aquaman, Klarion the Warlock, Traci 13, Stanley and His Monster, Scream Queen and Jason Blood – in preventing Morgaine le Fey from traveling back in time to our era and destroying the sun! But Batman insists that you can’t change the past, and, well, Batman is kind of always right, so . . . hello, eternal darkness? Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and ChrisCross bring “Sorcerer Kings” to a sun-shattering conclusion!

Check out these preview pages from Comic Book Resources:

What the heck is Firestorm saying?  Anyone have an idea?  And what an interesting redesign for the character!  Very original!

The art in this book is done by ChrisCross, the initial artist for Firestorm vol 3.  ChrisCross was integral in the development of Jason Rusch’s original Firestorm look.  It’s nice to see him working on everybody’s favorite Nuclear Man again!

My thanks to Brandon Leonard for sending me a heads-up about this appearance!

Hot Shot the Nuclear Bot

Firestorm… the Transformer?  Check out this customized Hot Shot Transformer: Armada figure…

Hot Shot the Nuclear Bot - Firestorm custom Transformer

This Firestorm/Hot Shot figure appears on the Justice League of Autobots page! It’s a neat page featuring a whole bunch of customized Transformers, repainted as Justice League members.

Hot Shot the Nuclear Bot’s origin according to the site is: When Sideswipe and Sunstreaker were fused in a Space Bridge accident, they gained powers over matter and energy thanks to their doubled spark.

My thanks to Mark Baker-Wright of the Transforming Seminarian blog for sending this my way!

George Perez draws Firestorm in JSA #50

Firestorm made a cameo appearance in Justice Society of America #50 a few weeks ago.  Our favorite Nuclear Man appeared in a flashback page featuring the JLA drawn by the legendary George Perez!

Ethan Van Sciver drawing of Firestorm and JLA

Ethan Van Sciver sketched and inked the drawing below of Firestorm and the JLA while stuck in the Dallas airport last month.  Another gentleman named Moose did an amazing job coloring the piece.  I gotta say Firestorm fans, this is one of the most gorgeous pieces of Firestorm artwork I’ve ever seen!  Click the image below to enlarge.

Here is a close-up of the original pencil and ink that sold on eBay for $680!

If you’d like a print of this awesome Firestorm and JLA piece, you can order one for $20.  The print is oversized (13″x19″) and comes on archival paper with archival inks. That price includes shipping in the continental United States. For details, e-mail the colorist Moose at moosebaumann@mediacombb.net.  Moose is fully endorsed by Ethan Van Sciver.  For more of Moose’s work, please click here.  Here is a goofy snapshot of me once my print came in!  It’s so gorgeous, I’ll  probably end up framing the piece!

Flashpoint Preview Featuring Firestorm

This past Saturday on Free Comic Book Day, DC Comics released their Green Lantern Flashpoint Special Edition.  In the Flashpoint preview (which I believe came from the first few pages of Flashpoint #1), we got a momentary glimpse of Firestorm!  Check it out below!  Click the image to enlarge.

Flashpoint preview from Free Comic Book Day

You can just make out Firestorm’s head and feet behind Flash and Wonder Woman.

Firestorm in Flashpoint Preview

That leaves us wondering… will Firestorm be featured in Flashpoint, or was he shown simply because of his recent appearances in Brightest Day?  Only time will tell!

Flashpoint is written by Geoff Johns, penciled by Andy Kubert, inked by Sandra Hope, and colored by Alex Sinclair.  Look for Flashpoint #1 in your local comic book shop this Wednesday, May 11!

Lil’ Stormy

This funny little guy first appeared in the letters page of Firestorm #91.  He appeared a few more times before the end of the series, each time with a different quote.  To my knowledge he was never given a name, nor was it revealed who drew the caricature of the Elemental Firestorm.  I think he’s adorable!

Lil' Stormy from Firestorm

I’ve always referred to him as “Lil’ Stormy”.  Unless Firestorm editor-at-the-time Dan Raspler or the original artist steps forward with a different opinion, he will be known as Lil’ Stormy forevermore!

Lil’ Stormy is so cute!  I want a stuffed animal of this guy!

Firestorm Patches

There is a segment of folks out there that love to collect patches.  Personally, whenever I think of patch collecting it reminds me of the late 1970s and denim jackets.  However, given that I live in a glass house built of Firestorm memorabilia, I’m not one to cast stones.

Until a few weeks ago, I didn’t even know there were Firestorm patches!  I won the Firestorm patch below on eBay recently.  It was produced by Willabee & Ward as part of their Official DC Comics Patches collection.

Firestorm patch from Willabee & Ward

The border and classic Firestorm logo were embroidered.  The image of Firestorm himself has been printed on the fabric.  This drawing of Firestorm looks REALLY familiar, but I’m having a hard time placing it. I think it may have been used with the Super Power action figure, but further research would be needed. Does anyone have the cut-out Firestorm data card from the Super Powers action figure card?  If so, any chance you could send me a scan of both sides?  It would be greatly appreciated.

The patch came attached to a nice oversized, heavy paper-stock information sheet (called a “Collector Panel”).  The sheet provides a Who’s Who-like history of the classic Firestorm.  It’s well-written, entertaining, and accurate.  The sheet measures 9 by 12 inches, while the patch measures just about 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches.  Click the two images below to read the information sheet.

As I mentioned, this patch is part of the Official DC Comics Patches collection by Willabee & Ward.  According to their website each patch is framed by embroidered patterns of up to 15,000 separate stitches.  The collection includes other DC heroes such as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman.

If you’re interested, the collection is available on a subscription basis.  You receive your first DC Comics Patch for just $4.95, shipping and service included.  Subsequent patches shipped two per month, at $19.95 each, plus $1.95 each shipping and service.  Ouch, seems a little pricey to me, but if you’re into patches and superheroes then it sounds like this is for you.

While surfing for information on these patches, I came across another set of Firestorm patches.  I tell ya, apparently there is a whole world of patch collecting out there I knew nothing about!  This next set of patches is advertised as “Set of Firestorm Super Powers Embroidered Patches”.  It comes from an Argentinean website called Amos Del Retro.  The patch of Firestorm’s head looks pretty cool; exactly like Firestorm from the Super Powers cartoon.  I’m guessing these Argentinean patches are not officially endorsed by DC, but they still look pretty neat.  If you are interested in picking up these patches, you can check out the Amos Del Retro website or their offerings on eBay.

عاصفة في اللغة العربية

How about a little Firestorm elemental action … in Arabic!

Our good buddy Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog made an fascinating discovery recently.  He bought some Superman comics translated into Arabic for a friend who’s learning the language.  As he was flipping through a comic he purchased and stumbled across Firestorm!  Arabic Superman #703 (1992) featured a reprint and translation of Action Comics #666 (1991).  Below you’ll find the Arabic cover, followed by the original American cover.

Arabic Superman #703

Action Comics #666

The Elemental Firestorm appeared on two interior pages.  The interesting part is that Arabic reads right to left.  Therefore all the pages are flipped to their mirror-image, and the back page is the start (exactly like manga, if you’re at all familiar with that).   Below you’ll find the Arabic Superman pages in black and white, followed by the corresponding American pages in color.

Arabic Superman #703 page 6 featuring Firestorm and Captain Atom

Action Comics #666 starring Superman featuring Firestorm and Captain Atom

Arabic Superman #703 featuring Firestorm and Captain Atom

Action Comics #666 starring Superman featuring Firestorm and Captain Atom

I wonder if reversing the art caused any problems for the readers.  For example, if you look above you’ll notice Superman’s “S” shield is reversed.  Now the Arabic language doesn’t even feature our version of the letter “S”, so it’s probably a non-issue.  However, I can’t help wondering.  By the way, this entire issue was a sort of dream/trance sequence, so Firestorm appearance was just imagined by Superman.

My thanks again to Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog for providing me with theses scans to publish!  Jon has supplied FIRESTORM FAN with numerous scans over the past few years, including Firestorm comics translated into Spanish!  Jon is also quite the collector of original Firestorm artwork.  You may view scans of his entire art collection online by clicking here.
