Match-Head Profile: Roy Cleary

Happy Friday! Today we’re doing something a little different and featuring a profile of a fellow match-head, Mr. Roy Cleary!

Roy has been a big supporter of THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST and he’s a die-hard Firestorm fan. Roy was first attracted to the character after seeing Firestorm vol II #45 on a shelf back in the 1980s and then going back and getting the previous issues. As a young lad he had several fan letters printed in Firestorm vol II, as well as Justice League, Suicide Squad, Manhunter, and Starman. Roy also won the “name the letter column” contest for the short-lived Suicide Squad series by Keith Giffen featuring Killer Frost.

Not only did Firestorm get Roy into comics, it also got him out of comics for a while (or rather the death of Ronnie Raymond led Roy to quit comics for a number of years). Roy returned to DC comics with the launch of The New 52. Since then Roy has been acquiring some cool Firestorm merchandise. For example, he’s picked up a Firestorm Toon Tumbler, Firestorm/Deathstorm Action League mini-figures, and a Kenner Super Powers Collection Firestorm action figure still in the original packaging!

Below is an art print Roy picked up from a series of portfolios released by DC Comics in extremely limited numbers (only 520 portfolio sets) to celebrate the launch of The New 52. It’s printed on heavy, glossy stock art paper and measures 12” x 9” in size. I’d never even heard of these portfolios until Roy let me know. Pretty cool item!

Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #1 cover portfolio print

Below is a page of original art Roy owns from Firestorm vol II #69 with pencils by J.J. Birch and inks by Sam De La Rosa. At first I planned to tease Roy for owning an original page with the Zuggernaut, but then I was blown away by the art! Issue #69 is one of three issues of Firestorm drawn by Joe Brozowski under the pseudonym J.J. Birch.  The art in the Birch issues is really exceptional as you can see in the page below. It’s a very different style from Brozowski’s previous art, somewhat reminiscent of Keith Giffen’s work in that era.  Neat stuff! For more on J.J. Birch/Joe Brozowski check out this article on Comic Book Resources.

Finally, below is Roy being just plain mean. On THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST, I mentioned I don’t own a copy of the Fury of Firestorm #61 variant cover. Roy was kind enough to send me a photo of the three copies he owns! He’s hoarding these things! That’s why I can’t find a copy!  :)  To add further insult to injury, Roy e-mailed me this week to say he’s picked up a FOURTH copy of this variant cover! Geez!

To keep up with Roy’s thoughts on comics, find him on the DC Comics Message Board as “Charlemagne”. Also, check out Roy on the FKA Podcast! Roy and friends touch on topics that appeal to their inner nerds. Popular segments include: “Apologies,” in which they apologize for the previous podcast, and “Better Things To Do,” a review of other podcasts.

Firestorm in Green Lantern: Circle of Fire

We’ve got a really interesting blogging event going on this week! The stellar Green Lantern-themed blog The Indigo Tribe has recruited several superhero bloggers to assist in covering Green Lantern: Circle of Fire. This fifth-week event from the year 2000 featured two bookend issues, titled Green Lantern: Circle of Fire, and five issues in-between co-starring a brand new Green Lantern Corps member paired up with an established DC superhero. These other heroes included Power Girl, Adam Strange, Firestorm, the Atom, and Kyle Rayner.

The interesting thing about this blogging event/crossover is that it’s all taking place over on The Indigo Tribe blog!

I was honored to be invited to participate in this blogging event! It was a fun chance to go back and revisit these old Firestorm appearances. Be sure to head over to The Indigo Tribe today and read my review of Green Lantern and Firestorm #1! To help promote the blogging event, I thought today I’d run some pages from the crossover. Enjoy!

Below are two pages from Green Lantern: Circle of Fire #1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Norm Breyfogle. These pages feature Ronnie Raymond being tutored by Ray Palmer (a.k.a. The Atom) in scientific knowledge since Professor Stein was no longer around. I really dig these pages! I’d love to see more of Ronnie and Ray together!

Here is another page from that book featuring one of my favorite Firestorm shots! Breyfogle is a master!

Firestorm found in Justice League stickers

Whenever I travel on long trips via Interstate 10, I always seem to stop at the same gas station. While there last year I came across some Batman: The Brave and the Bold temporary tattoos featuring Firestorm. I stopped there again recently and came across the Justice League stickers below, also featuring Firestorm! Crazy! Apparently this out-of-the-way gas station is the mecca for obscure Firestorm merchandise.

There were two different sheets in the package. To give you some perspective, each sheet measures about six inches across and five-and-a-half inches high. Below is the front sheet, with the back sheet beneath that. I was impressed with the inclusion of some more obscure characters such as: Red Arrow, Black Lightning, Black Canary, Vixen, Zatanna, and obviously Firestorm.

Below you’ll find a close-up of the Firestorm sticker. The image was taken from an Ed Benes drawing done back in 2009.Firestorm sticker from Justice League set

Neat stuff! Seems like they were banking on the popularity of Batman, Green Lantern, and Superman to sell these stickers! For me, it was the guy whose head is on fire.

*** MORE UPDATES ***

Our good buddy Diabolu Frank (of more blogs than you could possibly imagine) and liquidcross (our resident Green Lantern expert) have joined in the fun and posted some of these stickers to their own blogs!  Show the guys some appreciation by demonstrating you know how to click …

Firestorm Died in DC Universe Online Legends #23

NEWSFLASH: Firestorm died in the recently published DC Universe Online Legends #23… well, sort of.

First, it’s pretty cool that Firestorm made an appearance in the DC Universe Online Legends comic, especially since he hasn’t shown up in the game itself yet.

Second, it’s pretty cool he made the cover by Mike S. Miller! See below…

DC Universe Online Legends #23 cover by Mike S. Miller

Third, it’s pretty cool that it took someone like Black Adam to kill Firestorm!

DC Universe Online Legends #23 artwork by Mike S. Miller

Finally, it’s cool that apparently Firestorm isn’t dead. DC Universe: The Source blog recently ran some preview pages of DC Universe Online Legends #24 drawn by Howard Porter and Livesay. Oddly enough, Firestorm appears in those preview pages (see below). So I guess Black Adam really just gave Firestorm a chiropractic adjustment. Awful nice of Teth-Adam…

DC Universe Online Legends #24 artwork by Howard Porter and Livesay

Is anyone out there reading this comic regularly? I’ve skimmed through it a few times. Near as I can tell, it’s set loosely in the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe. Since there is a bunch of wonky time travel and apocalyptic futures, I can only assume this is an alternate timeline (or a timeline that will be erased/corrected in the conclusion). In regard to Firestorm, I’m pretty sure this is the Brightest Day Firestorm with Ronnie in charge of the merged form. Nice to see this incarnation again, even it was just for shock value.

My thanks to Match-head SDF-7 for the heads-up on this appearance!

Looking to the future with FURY OF FIRESTORM #9

The solicitation was released two weeks ago for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #9 shipping in May. With all the excitement of Plastique Week and the release of issue #6, we haven’t had a chance to talk about this solicitation yet. BIG NEWS — issue #9 features a crossover with Justice League International! Not only does Firestorm get one of the first crossovers of The New 52, but it’s with one of my favorite other books! Check out the super-fun cover below by Ethan Van Sciver!

• Don’t miss this crossover with JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #9!

Now, keep in mind Justice League International #9 comes out before Fury of Firestorm #9. So be sure to pick up JLI #9 on May 2 for the first part of this story.

In preparation for this crossover, Yildiray Cinar has been practicing drawing the JLI characters. He’s posted a few of his sketches to Twitter for us Match-heads to enjoy. Below is a sketch Yildiray did of Guy Gardner.

Ethan Van Sciver saw the sketch and decided to ink the image. Below is Ethan Van Sciver’s inks of Guy Gardner over Yildiray Cinar’s pencils. Enjoy!

How cool is that?!?! I’d love to see Ethan Van Sciver ink Yildiray Cinar’s work on a full comic. That would be awesome! According to Yildiray on Twitter, he’ll be penciling the cover to The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #10 with Ethan providing the inks!

I’m really looking forward to these crossover issues! I love me some Firestorm, and I love me some JLI! Can’t wait!
