Felicity Smoak from Arrow worked for Power Girl!

This one is for fans of the TV show Arrow, fans of Power Girl, or fans of Firestorm!

Back in Green Lantern/Power Girl #1 (Oct. 2000), Felicity Raymond (formerly Felicity Smoak) was shown working for Karen Starr (Power Girl’s secret identity). Apparently Felicity’s computer skills earned her a high-ranking position in Karen’s company, Starrware.

Felicity Smoak (Raymond) from Arrow as she appeared in Green Lantern/Power Girl #1

Green Lantern/Power Girl #1 (part of the Green Lantern: Circle of Fire crossover) was written by Scott Beatty, pencilled by Pete Woods, and inked by Andrew Pepoy & John Stanisci.

As you can see in the first panel above, Felicity appears older in the comics as compared to Emily Bett Rickards performance on Arrow. This is understandable as by this point in comics Felicity had quite a bit of life experience: a former manager for a New York software company, filed a lawsuit against Firestorm for negligence, married Ed Raymond, helped raise her college-aged stepson Ronnie Raymond, and furthered her career at other companies. She was a successful woman and not one to be crossed.

For contrast in appearance, below you’ll find an image of Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak on Arrow. Who knows, maybe this Felicity Smoak will ending up working for Power Girl someday too!

My thanks to Ed “The Unique Geek” for the heads-up on this comic appearance!

DC Wall Calendar – 1986

Back in 1986 I desperately wanted a DC Comics wall calendar. Most old school fans probably remember the advertisement in the back of the DC Comics at the time. If not, you can check it out over on the DC Comics of the 1980s blog. The calendar consisted of eight different drawings, each by different artists. The overall poster design was by Ed Hannigan and Richard Bruning.

The images I’ve posted below were taken from the DC Comics of the 1980s blog. Just as an FYI, this is a different site than the one I promoted yesterday. Yes, you can now get your 1980s DC Comics fix from two different sites: DC Comics of the 1980s blog and DC in the 80s Tumblr!

Janus Directive Advertisement – 1989

Who remembers “The Janus Directive”? If you don’t, it was an 11-part crossover that ran through five DC comics back in mid-1989 (Checkmate, Suicide Squad, Manhunter, Captain Atom, and Firestorm). It wasn’t a marquee crossover, but was entertaining for those reading the espionage comics at the time. Personally, I was a big fan of Suicide Squad and Manhunter! The Elemental Firestorm played a minor role in this crossover and was primarily included because John Ostrander (the writer of Firestorm at the time) was directing this crossover.

I don’t have a lot of recollections of the crossover. I should probably dig it out of my collection and re-read it. Anyone remember it well?

Below you’ll see a house ad promoting the crossover. I found this ad over on the phenomenal DC in the 80s Tumblr! Be sure to check out that site, you won’t regret it!

Firestorm outsells Batman, Justice League & Green Lantern!!!

Brace yourself, Fury of Firestorm outsold the vast majority of other DC titles, including: Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, Green Lantern, and Flash!!!

Astonishing, right?!?! … Alright, I know you are waiting for the catch. Here it is, the statement above is completely factual … for November 1985. A while back over on Jim Shooter’s blog, he posted some DC Comics sales data from November 1985. Below are the relevant documents.

DC Comics sales data for November 1985 from Jim Shooter's blog

DC Comics sales data for November 1985 from Jim Shooter's blog

It’s rewarding to see that Fury of Firestorm was such a top seller!

Here is a little information on the numbers themselves. The “draw” represents the composite of orders from various distributors (and thus the print run), while “sale” represents the supposed number of copies sold. There is a lot of debate as to what the true sales numbers were, plus what was the impact of newsstand versus direct market. For full details, be sure to check out Jim Shooter’s post on this.

Regardless of the exact sales figures, this data allows us to compare the individual comics to each other. Just take a moment and bask in the glory that Firestorm outsold so many other DC Comics. Could you imagine nowadays Fury of Firestorm outselling Batman, Justice League, or Green Lantern?!?! I know I can’t. Kind of hard to wrap my brain around the fact that Firestorm was so popular.

As a frame of reference, here are a few of the November 1985 covers: Fury of Firestorm #41 (by Gerry Conway & Rafael Kayanan), Batman #389, Justice League of America #244, and Green Lantern #194!

Direct Currents #16 Promoting Comics Shipping in May 1989

Check out the back cover of Direct Currents #16 from May 1989! It’s a “Collector’s Page” featuring our favorite hothead!

Direct Currents #16 back cover featuring Firestorm by Al Milgrom

If you aren’t familiar with Direct Currents, they were a free, promotional magazine containing approximately 8 pages, that solicited the titles being released by DC Comics that month. It was sort of like a monthly version of the DC Sampler that we discussed on the latest FIRE & WATER PODCAST. My local comic shop didn’t typically carry Direct Currents, so it was always a treat to find one in other shops. Just for fun, below is the cover to Direct Currents #16 promoting comics shipping in May 1989!
