Killer Frost Cosplay Kid!

Check out this awesome young lady cosplaying the New 52 incarnation of Killer Frost! How cool is that (pun intended)?!?!? Click the image below to enlarge!

The image above was posted to Reddit shortly after Halloween. I reached out to the girl’s family and her mother was kind enough to write back, providing some history on the costume and more photos! Below is the note from the cosplayer’s mom, followed by more pics!

My daughter is nine years old and comes from a long line of comics enthusiasts. Every year I encourage her to choose a character she’s interested in learning more about to cosplay and I try to put together a costume that will make it especially fun for her. She’s done Princess Leia, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, Neytiri, Marie Antoinette and Nefertiti. She’s always been partial to DC characters and over the summer she was excited to attend some local conventions here in Las Vegas to get some ideas. We are fortunate to have a very good friend in Ralph Mathieu who owns our favorite comic book store, Alternate Reality Comics, helps us get our hands on the source material for all her most beloved characters. We bought the Injustice: Gods Among Us game when it came out and she played it for months. I played Killer Frost and she played Raven (her all-time favorite character) in some pretty epic duels. Since she had just cosplayed Raven at a con in June I suggested she consider another character. And so began her interest in Killer Frost. The Killer Frost costumes in Injustice are too mature for a nine year old so we sat at the computer and did an image search and spent some time researching the many incarnations of Killer Frost until my daughter decided which she liked best. It just happened to be Caitlin Snow from JLA 7.2/Forever Evil storyline. My daughter and I love spy stuff and science so this version seemed like the perfect fit. She and I got to work conceptualizing a costume and spent a week making it. This is one of our favorite ways to bond! And if you have seen any of the other pictures from Halloween, you can tell this kid gets WAY into cosplaying.

Those pictures are adorable! She is so cute, yet intensely into the role! Love it! I’ve got a 7 year old daughter myself, so I can totally understand a young lady’s passion for dressing up and character-play. And what a great project for mother and daughter to work on together! Absolute Win-Win!!

My thanks to Allen Lee Hansard, boss-man over at the Superhero Costuming Forum, for the heads-up on this super-fun cosplay!

BIG NEWS! Firestorm to appear in new weekly, THE NEW 52: FUTURES END

Wow! Didn’t see this coming! Yesterday DC Comics announced a new weekly series starting in Spring 2014 entitled, The New 52: Futures End. The big news for Match-heads is that Firestorm will play an important role in the series!!

The story broke via the Associated Press early Wednesday morning. I’ll give a quick rundown of the details here… The New 52: Futures End debuts on Free Comic Book Day in May 2014 with a free zero issue, then issue #1 will follow later that month. The writers on the series include: Jeff Lemire, Keith Giffen, Brian Azzarello and Dan Jurgens. Some of the artists on the series include: Ethan Van Sciver (drawing the zero issue), Jesus Merino, Aaron Lopresti, Dan Jurgens, and more.

That’s right, Dan Jurgens and Ethan Van Sciver will be working on Firestorm again! Add the star power of the other creators involved and it sounds like the Nuclear Man couldn’t be in better hands! Back in 2010 Firestorm was featured in a similarly structured bi-weekly series entitled, Brightest Day. That series did a tremendous job raising the profile of the character, resulting in his own monthly series. Fingers crossed for similar results this time around!!

Very little information is available on the series at this time, especially Firestorm’s involvement. Below is an excerpt from the AP story, including mention of Firestorm.

[Jeff] Lemire calls the new weekly series an exploration of DC’s past, present and its future.

“Really, what we’re trying to do with this book is to explore the nature of what a hero is and we’re doing that, obviously by playing with the future of the New 52 timeline,” he said. “Past present and future all colliding in this story line.”

That means exploring the past with a character like Frankenstein, the present with Firestorm and the future with Batman Beyond who is, Lemire said, making what is his first “in-continuity appearance. He’ll become part of the New 52.”

Lots of chatter among the fans about Batman Beyond and Frankenstein, but for obvious reasons I’m focusing on Firestorm here. One question that comes to mind is which incarnation of Firestorm will we see in this series? Will it be the current Ronnie/Jason version? Or will Forever Evil result in a change to the current Firestorm matrix composition?

When I read the description, I assumed Futures End would be somewhat like an anthology. Three features with independent creative teams, telling segments that weave into an overall story; one each for past, present, and future. On Facebook I asked Dan Jurgens, “Can you tell us which segments you’ll be most involved in? Will you be writing/drawing the Firestorm segments?” Ethan Van Sciver followed up with, “There aren’t ‘segments’, it’s a story.” Very cool! Maybe Firestorm will meet Batman Beyond. That would be pretty sweet!

Below you’ll find the cover of The New 52: Futures End #0 by Ryan Sook. Looks like Batman Beyond will be dealing with some Brother Eye/OMAC future folk! Good luck, Terry!

Killer Frost & Sterling Gates… together again in Forever Evil: A.R.G.U.S.

If you haven’t been following the current mini-series Forever Evil: A.R.G.U.S., then you’re missing Sterling Gates writing Killer Frost again!! Sterling wrote the excellent Killer Frost one-shot for Villains Month, so I’m thrilled to see him guiding the character once again. Click here for a FIRESTORM FAN exclusive interview with Sterling Gates conducted just prior to Villains Month.

Issues #1 & #2 of Forever Evil: A.R.G.U.S. are on sale now! When originally solicited, it was promoted with a different author. I picked up the first two issues on a whim when I noticed Sterling Gates name on the cover. Wow! I’m really digging this series! Killer Frost shows up in the second issue and she’s slated to appear throughout the six issue mini-series!

Below you’ll find the solicitations for the next three issues. Keep in mind the solicitation for issue #3 was written before Sterling Gates took over this project. So while Killer Frost isn’t specifically mentioned in the solicitation, she was mentioned in the issue #2 ‘Next Issue’ blurb!

Joe Harris reveals his Lost “Year Two” Firestorm Story Notes

Joe Harris, former writer of DC’s New 52 title The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men, just last week shared his unrealized plans for the series if he had continued as writer for another year! Joe stepped in to help Ethan Van Sciver with the “Firestorm Protocols” story when Gail Simone left the book. Ethan eventually left the series as well, which left Joe the sole writer on the book. Last week Joe posted what he calls, “The Lost Firestorm ‘Year Two’ Story Notes Mindmap.”  This “mindmap” is a flowchart-looking image which he often makes using his iPad when plotting out stories and outlining.

In his blog post, Joe explained:

… [the mindmap] is based off of the original plans through issue #12… in which Ronnie and Jason, the two disagreeable Firestorms, would have taken on Pozhar, who’d sought to control Ronnie and gain access to the Quantum Field via the young man’s special connection which he coveted. Following this showdown, Ronnie and Jason, along with those Firestorms who survived, were to head into the mountains of northern Pakistan in search of a new villain named “Ashra Khan,” whom we were going to reveal was behind the “Rogue” Firestorms, a kind of Colonel Kurtz leading broken warriors fighting a war outside the war. And the conclusion of that story arc would have propelled us toward what’s being worked toward in this document.

For all the details and a better look at this mindmap, be sure to head over to Joe’s blog by clicking here.

Joe Harris Lost Firestorm “Year Two” Story Notes Mindmap

Wow! There are some really interesting concepts put forth in there! It would have been fascinating to have seen this journey unfold. During a discussion on Facebook, Joe also shared this:

I always wanted to take the series toward a real epic, ‘cosmic level’ event. When you start dealing with the nuclear forces of stars, you start considering the notions of black holes, supernovae and, potentially, wormholes… which is where this all comes from. It would have been fun, but alas…

We may not have seen Joe’s vision unfold in the pages of Firestorm, but you can still support his work! Check out his current project, Great Pacific from Image Comics! For all the latest, follow Joe on Twitter and Facebook!

My thanks to the following Match-heads for the heads-up on this story: Vito Delsante, Bill PowellKen Deemer, and Ray Tigner. Thanks!!

Happy Birthday to Firestorm! 36 Years Old Today!

Happy Birthday Firestorm! Hard to believe you’re 36 years old today! You still seem like a teenager to us readers.

Firestorm The Nuclear Man #1 Advertisement - December 6, 1977

There is some dispute as to the exact release date of Firestorm’s first issue. The house ad above identifies the release date as December 6, 1977, however, Mike’s Amazing World of DC Comics (a fantastic and almost always accurate database) indicates the release date was December 5, 1977. Personally, I choose to go with December 6 because it appears on this really nifty advertisement. Somewhat frivolous logic, but that describes my typical judgement anyway.

Happy Birthday to the Nuclear Man! Enjoy a big slice of cake today! My thanks to Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, and Jack C. Harris for bringing you into this world!

Uh-oh, I think Firestorm is going to explode.. literally!

Uh-oh… I’m afraid Firestorm is about to become a living Weapon of Mass Destruction. Maybe I’m seeing things that aren’t there, but while reviewing upcoming DC Comics solicitations I found myself saying, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” To be fair this is all pure speculation, but if you read the solicitations you might just agree with me. Check out below the promo copy for Forever Evil #5 and Justice League of America #12. Then scroll further down further for my thoughts…

A devastating battle against Despero begins as Manhunter and Stargirl arrive in San Francisco to save Stargirl’s family from Firestorm’s fallout!

Justice League of America #12 cover by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira

Put these two solicitations together and I think Firestorm just might explode in the coming months.. literally!

  • In Forever Evil #5, “… Lex Luthor and his Injustice League raid the stronghold of the Crime Syndicate with consequences so devastating, the DC Universe will never be the same!
  • And then 3 weeks later in JLA #12, “… Manhunter and Stargirl arrive in San Francisco to save Stargirl’s family from Firestorm’s fallout!

We already know the Crime Syndicate is holding Firestorm somewhere; their stronghold seems like a reasonable place. Firestorm’s powers seem pretty unstable at the moment given what happened to him in Forever Evil #3. Then the big clue comes in the JLA #12 solicitation, “… Firestorm’s fallout!” Fallout?!?! That implies the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. Couple that with the promo copy in Forever Evil #5 and I’m envisioning Firestorm going critical and exploding, thus destroying part of San Francisco and irradiating the town!

If I’m right, I just hope it plays out better than Marvel’s New Universe The Pitt. Also, what does DC Comics have against the west coast? California was a target in Superman: The Motion Picture; Coast City in “Death of Superman”; and San Diego in Aquaman’s “Sub-Diego” storyline. With DC’s offices moving out west, I’d be careful. Just sayin’.

What do you think? Is my speculation a step too far? Or might I be on to something?
