Another Firestorm Tattoo

Check out this wicked-cool Firestorm tattoo!  Lance Van Sant showed off his sweet-looking tattoo on the Facebook group, Forget Superman and Spiderman, it’s all about Firestorm.  He was kind enough to grant me permission to display his tattoo here.

Lance has demonstrated that he’s a true Firestorm Fan!  In addition to the Firestorm tattoo, Lance also has an amazing Iron Man tattoo around the other side of the leg.  Very cool!

Hi, My Name is Ronnie Raymond and I’m an Alcoholic

Many Firestorm fans have expressed concerns about Ronnie’s drinking in the current Brightest Day series considering his battle with alcoholism in the mid-1990s.  If you examine Brightest Day by itself, I think it’s quite understandable that a college-aged young man who just returned from the dead would enjoy a good drink.  However things become a bit more complex when you look at his history with drinking.

During the Extreme Justice series in the mid-90s, Ronnie Raymond began drinking heavily.  At the start of the series, Ronnie was no longer Firestorm and was undergoing treatment for leukemia.  Due to a series of incidents involving chemotherapy, the Justice League, and the Elemental Firestorm, Ronnie was miraculously cured of leukemia and he regained his Firestorm powers (this time he was flying solo with no one else sharing the matrix).  Somewhere in here Ronnie adopted a “live for today” attitude.  This translated into Ronnie drinking more often.  Eventually Ronnie’s drinking interfered with his superheroic activities.  See below…

Now we skip forward a few pages…

Firestorm and alcoholism in Extreme Justice #16

The follow-up to this story was published in Showcase ’96 two months later.  It was a surprisingly dark and serious look at addiction.  See below…

Showcase ’96 #6 & #7  (July & August 1996)

  • Storm’s Clearing – Part 1: Drying Out and Chasing the Clouds Away
  • Writer: Robert L. Washington III
  • Artist: Randy DuBurke

The second issue continued the dark and serious themes.  Here is how the story ended…

Firestorm and alcoholism in Showcase 96 #7

As you can see, DC took the time to deal with Ronnie’s alcoholism very seriously.  It’s not often that a comic addresses real-life issues like alcoholism in such a way.   Whether you liked these stories or not, you gotta admire DC for being brave enough to publish them.

So as you can imagine, long-time fans of Firestorm are concerned about Ronnie falling off the wagon.  To be fair, in Brightest Day we’ve only see Ronnie drink a few times.  We don’t actually know how much or how often he’s been drinking.  It’s implied that he’s getting blitzed a lot, but we don’t know for sure.  It’s quite possible this is part of the building story.  Perhaps Brightest Day will deal with Ronnie’s continued struggle with alcoholism.  In 2002 during a JLA story it was revealed that Ronnie had at least one night of binge drinking, but that is the only reference I’m aware of after Showcase ’96 and prior to Brightest Day.  Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi are excellent writers and I’m hopeful this Brightest Day subplot will resolve itself, yet pay respect to what has come before.

This post was inspired by Scott Mateo’s entries on the Comic Book Resources forum and the ComicBloc forum.  On those sites Scott posted the majority of these scans.  I’ve added a few here myself to further show the impact of the story.  My thanks to Scott for his inspiration!  Visit the thread at Comic Book Resources by clicking hereVisit the thread at ComicBloc by clicking here.

Firestorm, El Hombre Nuclear

¡Firestorm, el hombre nuclear, de los Super Amigos!

Our good friend Jon over at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog sent scans of these unique Firestorm collectibles. He received the following cards from Argentina.  The majority of these come from the Spanish-language version of Kenner’s Super Powers line, Super Amigos.

This first one is a trading card from the Super Amigos game.  To see all the cards in the Super Amigos card set, please visit the Aquaman Shrine by clicking here.

The next five are stickers associated with the Super Amigos line.  It appears these were produced from 1985 through 1987.

These next ones come from some Superman-related set.  This set was released in 1994.  Nice to see the Elemental Firestorm getting some merchandise action!

Here are some Firestorm stickers from that same 1994 Superman series.

These next two come from a set entitled “Cartas de Poder – DC Super Heroes”.  I really don’t know anything about these sets, but I love that they called Firestorm “el hombre nuclear”.  Also, he’s got an attack of 2,700 and a defense of 2,300!  I have no idea what the scale is, but that sounds impressive!

Geoff Johns on Firestorm in Brightest Day

Firestorm in Brightest Day

Last week Geoff Johns gave a fantastic interview to IGN about Brightest Day. Click here to read the entire interview. I’ve posted below the Firestorm-related discussion points.

It appears Scott Clark and Dave Beaty are the artists drawing the majority of the Firestorm scenes…

IGN Comics: Can you talk a little about how the art chores are being broken down?

Johns: As you can tell, each artist is taking lead on a character. Ivan Reis is doing all the Aquaman and Deadman stuff; Ardian is doing Hawkman and Hawkgirl; Patrick is doing Martian Manhunter; and Scott is doing Firestorm. Everyone has their own character, and every character has a different feel.

Some interesting commentary on post-Blackest Night Firestorm…

IGN Comics: From these early issues of Brightest Day, it seems like Aquaman’s experience in Blackest Night has left him with an uncertainty about the water and his powers, and we see why in issue #1 when he summons a bunch of undead sharks. Can you talk a little bit about what Aquaman is struggling with at the onset of Brightest Day?

Johns: He’s back, but there’s something off and he feels it. Maybe more than any of the others, he feels that there’s something darker still left in all of them. He’s more in touch with that than anybody else. Except maybe Firestorm.

Finally, here Geoff discusses Firestorm directly and teasing us about what is to come…

IGN Comics: Let’s jump over to Firestorm. With the possible exception of the New Teen Titans characters, Firestorm is one of the most successful new superhero characters to be introduced in the Bronze Age of the DCU. He had a nice run and long shelf-live as far as new characters typically go, but fell off in popularity and appeal over the past two decades. What’s your take on the character and what makes him special?

Johns: I like Firestorm because I like the duality of two very different people having to work together for the betterment of those around him. Conceptually, what Gerry Conway set up there really fascinates me. It creates great drama. Especially now that you have Jason and Ronnie together. Everything Jason went through in Blackest Night and everything he’s going through now, he’s been through hell. He looks at Ronnie as this carefree type who wants to hang out with his friends and celebrate being back by throwing parties, and on the surface Ronnie just can’t see the pain and suffering he’s caused. The truth behind it, though, is that Ronnie remembers everything. He’s aware of it and trying to shut it all away. Ronnie and Jason are going to come to a pretty dramatic confrontation about everything, one that will change both of them for a while. I really wanted to bring the new, Jason, and the original, Ronnie, together.

IGN Comics: Besides the character’s duality, one of the defining aspects Gerry Conway set into place was the idea that Ronnie was the one member of the Justice League who was green behind the ears, and lacked the life and heroic experience of the others. Now, with Jason in place of Professor Stein, you have two immature characters stuck together in the Firestorm persona, and I imagine that will fuel a great deal of drama as well.

Johns: Absolutely. They’re both college students now. They’re both pretty young characters, and the responsibility they both have is about to get a lot bigger once they discover what the Firestorm matrix really is, what it means to them and how they’re going to deal with it. Or are they going to be able to deal with it?

Looking forward to further Brightest Day issues with Firestorm!

Firestorm Brightest Day HeroClix

Last week WizKids announced the DC HeroClix Brightest Day Action Pack available in October 2010.  This pack contains only seven figures and Firestorm made the cut!  I was disappointed we didn’t get a Black Lantern Firestorm HeroClix (click here and click here for some customs), but this more than makes up for it.  Check out the Firestorm HeroClix below.

Brightest Day, Blank Slate Era, Firehawk’s lineage, and Charred Action Figures

Welcome to another installment of FIRESTORM FAN’s Nuclear News! Here are some news and web findings on our favorite hothead.  I gotta say, it’s nice to see some love for the “blank slate” incarnation of Firestorm this time around!

  • Brightest Day #4 came out yesterday.  This is the issue with the Black Lantern Firestorm cover.  Be sure to stop by your local comic shop and pick up a copy!

Brightest Day #4 Cover with Black Lantern Firestorm

  • There was some hubbub amongst Firestorm fans after Brightest Day #3 hit the stands two weeks ago.  In the issue they portray Alvin Rusch (Jason’s father) as having two hands.  The reason for the confusion is that Alvin Rusch lost his hand in an industrial accident before Firestorm vol III even started.  There is lots of speculation, everything from a simple artist mistake to Jason re-growing the hand.  At this time, I don’t believe we have an official explanation.
  • Over at Primary Ignition, they’ve identified Firestorm the Nuclear Man Annual #5 from 1987 as a hidden gem.  This is the issue where the “blank slate” Firestorm was created.  Click here to read their commentary on this great issue.

  • There is a really great column over at Comic Book Resources on Firestorm vol II artist J. J. Birch (a.k.a. Joe Brozowski).  J.J./Joe drew Firestorm during the “blank slate” era. This column specifically focuses on Firestorm the Nuclear Man vol II issues #70 & 71.   Click here to check out the article.

Firestorm in WB Consumer Products Promo

Somewhat surprisingly, Firestorm appears in a recent promotional image from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.  The image below comes from License! Global which is gearing up for their big licensing show in Las Vegas next week.  It was released along with some promo art for the upcoming Green Lantern film.  Visit SuperHeroHype.com for further information.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products promo piece with Firestorm

I’m thrilled Firestorm rated enough to appear in this artwork, on the second row to boot!  I assume they chose the classic Firestorm look (as opposed to his current Brightest Day look) because the Consumer Products division focuses on the “iconic” versions of the DC heroes.  Other “iconic” characters appearing include: Batgirl, Blue Devil, and Martian Manhunter.  Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) appears in his current costume (post-Green Lantern: Rebirth), but that sort of makes sense as DC is pushing him and banking on his future popularity created by the upcoming feature film.  The oddball is Aquaman appearing in his Brightest Day costume.  I guess since his costume change was so minor they didn’t have issue with using the new version.  Total speculation on my part.

The layout of characters is actually quite interesting from a marketing point of view.  The primary focus of the image is Green Lantern, Batman, and Superman. This seems to suggest they are the new trinity for DC from a merchandising perspective.  Sorry Wonder Woman, you’re stuck on the second row wedged behind Clark and J’Onn.  Beyond the big three in the front row, the eye seems to travel in a triangle upwards to Aquaman, Flash, and Green Arrow.  Those six characters form what I’ll call the “central pyramid” in this image.  That seems logical given the amount of merchandise out there featuring the characters from the central pyramid.  What is surprising is that Wonder Woman didn’t make it into the central pyramid, and that characters like Martian Manhunter and Zatanna share the front row.  WTF?  Are we celebrating Justice League Detroit here or something?  And Firestorm, Blue Devil, and the Weather Wizard rate the second row?  Really?  Not Hawkman, Atom, Captain Marvel, or others?  I can only hope this is foreshadowing to a major merchandising push for Firestorm!  That’s right folks, let’s celebrate the rising of the Nuclear Man!  Before you know it, he’ll be on lunch boxes, spiral notebooks, puffy stickers, and silly bandz.  … not.  Oh well, a boy can dream.

For those of you that read both FIRESTORM FAN and ONCE UPON A GEEK, sorry for some repeat information today.

Brightest Day, Odd Couple, Ed Benes sketch, Racism in comics, drink recipe, and more

Welcome to another installment of FIRESTORM FAN’s Nuclear News! Here are some news and web findings on our favorite hothead.

  • A few weeks back I did a post on the 2003 Ronnie Raymond Firestorm series that almost was.  I’m over-the-moon happy to report that I received very nice notes about my post from both writer Mike Carey and artist Lewis LaRosa.  Great guys! Be sure to support their projects!
  • Check out this amazing Firestorm sketch on eBay by Ed Benes (Justice League of America, Birds of Prey, Superman).  Gorgeous sketch!  It sold for $374.  Wow!

Ed Benes sketch of Firestorm

  • Brightest Day #3 came out last week and there is a good Firestorm-related scene.  Not going to spoil it for you.  Visit your local comic book shop and check it out!
  • DC Comics has created a Brightest Day mini-site and Firestorm has his own page.  Not much to see there yet, but check it out by clicking here.  Also, you can get some Brightest Day desktop wallpapers and buddy icons on their Download page by clicking here.
  • Peter Tomasi gave an interview to Newsarama about Brightest Day in early May.  Click here for the entire interview.  Below is an excerpt that included Firestorm:

Nrama: Then let’s switch our attention to this new Firestorm. Ronnie Raymond is obviously still irresponsible, and Jason already despises him. Are you hoping to explore the contrast between the two characters by throwing them together as Firestorm?

Tomasi: Ronnie and Jason’s characters are polar opposites in the truest sense of the word, and that makes them incredibly interesting to read about. All you need to do is put them in a room together and the tempers run high – put them in each other’s head and you’ve got a battle royale. Ronnie and Jason have a pretty epic storyline in place that will test them both and bring them right to the emotional edge of who they are and what they believe in.

An audience member wanted to thank DC for using Firestorm again. [Ian] Sattler replied that he is fascinating and has so much planned for him. Long term stuff.

  • Back in early May, Chris Sims wrote a post over at Comics Alliance on “The Racial Politics of Regressive Storytelling”.  The editorial makes the observation that DC is replacing legacy heroes that happen to be racially-diverse (such as Jason Rusch/Firestorm and Ryan Choi/Atom) with the classic iconic versions.  It just so happens that all the classic iconic versions are white Americans, therefore DC is eliminating their racially-diverse characters.
Now this editorial was written in early May.  Since then, a legacy superhero that happens to be non-white has been murdered in the pages of DC Comics (being vague on purpose so not to spoil it for anyone that doesn’t know).  Combine this editorial with the recent death and you’ve got a literal fandom firestorm on the net (no pun intended… well, maybe a little bit).  Just go to any comic message board and this topic is being argued.  I’ve also stumbled across dozens of comic news sites and blogs discussing this issue.  There are valid arguments on every side of this issue.  I’m not going to comment on the issue, but I encourage you to check out what everyone is saying.
  • David Wolkin did a review of Brightest Day #1 on his blog Wolkin’s House of Chicken and Waffles (and Comics!).   The review is very humorous and worth your time.  Additionally, he referred to Ronnie and Jason as “The New Odd Couple” and included a link to the following Twitpic he posted.  Friggin’ hilarious!
