Justice League and Justice Society Pin-up by George Perez

Check out this gorgeous JLA/JSA pin-up by George Perez from Justice League of America #195 (Oct. 1981).  This satellite-era shot is one of my favorites!  Click the image to enlarge.

Justice League of America and Justice Society of America by George Perez

If you look closely, each hero has been placed so they have a counterpart on the other side.  For example, Superman (JLA) has Superman (JSA) as his counterpart;  Snapper Carr (JLA) has Johnny Thunder (JSA) as his counterpart.  Firestorm’s counterpart is the Atom, which makes sense as the Atom was nuclear-powered during that time period.

Such a beautiful piece by George Perez!  I wish it was a poster!

Oh I remember having that – it’s probably still in a box in the basement somewhere. LOOOOOVED that! George Perez is still my all-time favorite artist…and he really knew how to do team books right. I think they need to clone dozens of him – just think of the work he could do on a modern age Who’s Who series with those amazing wrap around jam-packed covers!

Best part of that pin-up? THREE HAWKS BABY!

I also like that no one is the counterpart to Hawkgirl, because Hawkgirl truly is one of a kind. Well, two including Kendra.

Also, Martian Manhunter and Dr. Fate being paired together makes me smile because I had both of their Super Powers toys as a kid and I didn’t know who either of them were for YEARS on end!

Same story as Luke on J’Onn and Dr. Fate. I just bought them because they looked cool.

I might suggest Firestorm is “paired” with both the Atom and the Star-Spangled Kid. As you say, both Firestorm and the Atom have atomic powers, but Firestorm and SSK are thematically linked as the youngest members of their respective teams. Using this interpretation, the Earth-2 Hawkman serves as counterpoint to both Hawkman and Hawkwoman on the JLA side.

AHHHH the artistic mastery of the great George Perez.
