Firestorm Pin-up – June 1984

Here is a special pin-up from The Fury of Firestorm #24 (June 1984).  It’s a nice piece by Rafael Kayanan and Romeo Tanghal featuring Firestorm at the mercy of Byte.  This pin-up can be found in the back of the issue.  I was re-reading this comic recently and stumbled across the pin-up. It was an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise.  I always remember a cover, but often forget about cool pin-ups like this.  Enjoy!

Awesome stuff! I miss the days of pinups and lettercols.
I recently bought a whole mess of John Byrne’s run on Alpha Flight and it seems like every issue had a pinup in the back.

As much as I love Broderick’s art, looking back on the run of Fury of Firestorm as a whole, I think Kayanan was the strongest artist of the bunch.

One of the only things I didn’t like about the Firestorm series (before Ostrander took over, don’t even start me on that!) was that different artists made Firestorm look like it was a different guy under the costume. But this pin-up has the look that I liked the best, which probably stems from his JLA appearances. A fleeting fan probably won’t notice the little differences but I’m sure some of us did.
The DCUC action figure could have been one of the best ever, if they hadn’t butchered the costume so badly.

Doug/Outburst – Thanks for the comments!

I agree, Firestorm’s look varied depending upon the artist. And I agree with Doug that Kayanan is probably my favorite artist for the “Classic Firestorm”. He just got it right.

I miss the old pin-ups. I think lots of them were unused covers. I could be wrong, but that would be my guess. For example, notice this one has enough room at the top for a logo, if it were intended to be a cover.

If you are looking for the perfect “Classic” Firestorm figure, pick up the DC Direct “JLA” Firestorm figure from a few years back. It’s the best in my opinion. I’ll be doing a post about it within the next couple weeks. Watch for it!

    Thanks again,

Wow! That pin-up is gorgeous. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: Firestorm boasted one of the best designed costumes in all of comics, and there was something about his look that instantly expressed the raw power that the character possessed. This image conveys it all.

I have the DC Direct figure, but it’s articulation is limited compared to DCUC. You can’t get it into a large range of poses, but as far as the look goes, it’s almost perfect. There’s one major costume screwup on it, but I’ll wait to see if you catch it.

  6. Shag says:

Outburst – Would that costume screw-up be the extra red circle on the right-hand side (or actually the left side from Firestorm’s perspective)? Or would it be the lack of the three vertical lines on the briefs? Or how messed up the intersection of the white lines in the sum emblem look?

Even with those minor issues, I think this is the best looking Firestorm figure out there. I’ll be doing a post on it in the near future.

    Thanks again for the comments!
