How Ronnie was Fired from the JLA by Aquaman – 1984

TEAM WEEK continues here at FIRESTORM FAN! Since his days of playing high school basketball, Ronnie Raymond has been a team player. Perhaps that is why he’s joined so many superhero teams! This week we’re looking at several of the teams he’s joined since becoming Firestorm!

Today we’re focusing on why Firestorm left the Justice League of America. Let me bottom line it for you… Aquaman fired Firestorm from the JLA. Yup, it’s Aquaman’s fault. I’m sure Rob from THE AQUAMAN SHRINE has his own version of the truth, but don’t be fooled. That water-breathing, fishy-smell-loving amphibian kicked our favorite hot-head off the Justice League. Thanks, Water-Boy!

The Earth was attacked by Martians in Justice League of America #228-230. Unfortunately, not many of the JLAers responded to this “War of the Worlds”. With less and less members responding to various emergencies, Aquaman decided to take matters into his own hands. The pages that follow are from Justice League of America Annual #2 (Oct. 1984), written by Gerry Conway and penciled by the amazing Chuck Patton.

There it is… how Aquaman tore apart the world’s greatest heroes. So what does Aquaman do for an encore? How does he show the world what a fully-dedicated Justice League can accomplish? With Vibe and Gypsy, in Detroit. That’s how.

Okay, truth is I love me some Justice League Detroit. In fact, my buddy Diabolu Frank has a blog dedicated to Justice League Detroit. I just can’t forgive Aquaman for breaking up with Firestorm after five happy years together. Oh wait, that didn’t come out right…

How Ronnie Joined the JLA – 1980

It’s TEAM WEEK here at FIRESTORM FAN! Since his days of playing high school basketball, Ronnie Raymond has been a team player. Perhaps that is why he’s joined so many superhero teams! This week we’ll be looking at several of the teams he’s joined since becoming Firestorm!

First is how Firestorm joined the Justice League of America! When Firestorm the Nuclear Man was cancelled with issue #5 (Oct.-Nov. 1978), the character was shelved for a while. A year later co-creator Gerry Conway decided to dust off his creation and place him with the JLA. It all started in DC Comics Presents #17 (Jan. 1980) by Gerry Conway, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, and Steve Mitchell. Firestorm had retired from the superhero community and was living his life as normal guys Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein. They were pulled out of retirement when Killer Frost escaped and attacked New York. Working together, Superman and Firestorm were able to recapture Killer Frost. Below is the final page from that comic.

What a stunner of an ending! The story picked up a few months later in Justice League of America #179. Check out this somewhat strange cover below by Jim Starlin. Superman is such a boss!

The issue itself was written by Gery Conway with art by Dick Dillin and Frank McLaughlin. I love this first page below! It cracks me up that the JLA identifies the membership privileges. I guess they feel it’s necessary to set boundaries for the members to ensure nobody steals the ashtrays or something.

Justice League of America #179 by Gerry Conway, Dick Dillin, and Frank McLaughlin

The next few pages below cover Firestorm’s first hours as a JLA member. I love that the JLA is so mired in policy and procedure that Firestorm’s orientation includes a lecture from Batman on the satellite floor plan! Worse, it looks like several other JLA members have to sit through the lecture too! Cracks me up!

A little later, after Firestorm has undoubtedly received a lecture from Green Arrow on how to operate the space toilets, Firestorm is returned to Earth.

Pretty cool! Firestorm was a member of the League for nearly five years and appeared in many issues. I believe Firestorm’s membership in the JLA is what cemented his popularity and eventually lead to his own series and appearances in the Super Friends cartoon. Tomorrow we’ll look at the reasons for Firestorm’s departure from the Justice League.

Blank Slate Firestorm Original Artwork Bonanza

It’s time for more original Firestorm artwork from our good friend Jon from FIZZIT, the Firestorm-themed blog! He happens to own several original Firestorm pages and convention sketches and has been kind enough to allow me to publish scans of them here. Jon’s been a great contributor to FIRESTORM FAN and my thanks go out to him!  You may view scans of his entire art collection online by clicking here.

Today we’re showing off several pieces featuring the “Blank Slate” Firestorm by Joe Brozowski (a.k.a. J.J. Birch) and Sam de la Rosa! Jon bought these pieces directly from Sam de la Rosa himself!

First up is Firestorm the Nuclear Man volume II #69 page 17. This is one of three issues of Firestorm penciled by Joe Brozowski under the pseudonym J.J. Birch. As Birch, Brozowski drew very different from his previous art, somewhat reminiscent of Keith Giffen’s work in that era. Neat stuff! For more on J.J. Birch/Joe Brozowski check out this article on Comic Book Resources. And yes, that’s the Zuggernaut ripping open his own boobs to shoot projectiles at Firestorm. Click the image to enlarge.

Firestorm the Nuclear Man v2 #69 page 17 by J.J. Birch and Sam de la RosaUp next is page 21 also from Firestorm the Nuclear Man volume II #69. This is another J.J. Birch page featuring the Zuggernaut. Click the image to enlarge.

Firestorm the Nuclear Man v2 #69 page 21 by J.J. Birch and Sam de la RosaNext is Firestorm the Nuclear Man volume II #70 page 5. This is another J.J. Birch page. Notice the “surprint” overlay on the third through sixth panels. This was used to distinguish a specific color (more on that in a second). In this issue Firestorm had to deal with the Flying Dutchman of Time without the assistance of Ronnie or Mikhail! Click the image to enlarge.

Again, these were used to distinguish a specific color. After checking out this image, scroll down to see the final comic page. You’ll see how the figures below are colored entirely red in the finished comic, rather than the usual black ink. Click the image to enlarge.

Building the Hype for FIRESTORM #7

The excitement is building for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #7! With the introduction of Joe Harris as the new co-writer and Ethan Van Sciver handling all the art chores, this issue is big news! DC’s marketing team has started the hype-machine rolling on this book!

Last month DC ran a two-page sneak peek of Firestorm #7 in the back of several comics. Check it out below!

Next, Comic Book Resources ran an interview a couple days ago with Joe Harris and Ethan Van Sciver about Firestorm. Click here to read that interview! Then, Comic Book Resources featured some amazing Van Sciver artwork from issue #7.  Check out the absolutely adorable new Firehawk below! Watch out Tonya or the new Firehawk might just steal Jason’s heart!

The New 52 Firehawk from The Fury of Firestorm: The Nulcear Men by Ethan Van Sciver and Joe Harris

The excitement is building for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men#7! On March 28 pick up your copy by Ethan Van Sciver & Joseph Harris (writers), Ethan Van Sciver (cover, pencils, and inks), and Hi-Fi (colors)!

Final note: DC Comics has revamped their website and shut down their message boards. Personally I’m disappointed with this decision as there was a great thread by Ethan Van Sciver answering fan’s questions. I checked with Ethan and he says if you match-heads have questions, go ahead and post them on his Facebook page. If you want to keep up with Joe Harris, you can find him on Twitter and Facebook!

North Coast Comic Con – focused on Firestorm

The North Coast Comic Con is being held Saturday July 21 thru Sunday July 22 in Akron, Ohio. This convention is a match-head’s dream! Guests include Gerry Conway (co-creator of Firestorm) and John Ostrander (long-running Firestorm writer from the late 1980s)! Also, there will be a limited edition Firestorm print by artist Josh Medors available for those that purchase a two-day pass. On top of all that Firestorm goodness, there will be other fantastic guests (Marc Sumerak is a favorite of mine!).

This is shaping up to be an excellent event! Check out the Firestorm-themed poster below for further details!

Support GREAT PACIFIC from Joe Harris

Later this month, Joe Harris will debut as the new co-writer of The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men. Joe has an outstanding comics resume and we’re all very excited to see what direction he takes the book. In addition to writing our favorite hot-heads, Joe is developing a new creator-owned project entitled Great Pacific. He’s working with artist Martin Morazzo, editor Shawna Gore, graphic designer Sean Dove, and letterer Douglas Sherwood. Joe has put Great Pacific on Kickstarter to try and raise enough money to make this comic happen. This is where you come in.

Please visit the Kickstarter site for Great Pacific and consider backing the project. When you visit the page, be sure to check out the video explaining the project. The video provides you with a glimpse of the fascinating story and breathtaking artwork. You can pledge as little as $5, or as much as you’d like. I’ve committed to back the project myself and I hope you’ll consider doing the same. They’ve only got a week left in the fundraising campaign and every bit helps.

Great Pacific by Joe Harris

Here is the description of the book from Kickstarter:

Great Pacific is a full-color sci-fi adventure comic book series set to debut in the US comics market in October 2012. This is an ongoing title, and this Kickstarter fundraiser is intended to cover creative costs for the first 132 gorgeously rendered pages (six issues).

Great Pacific tells the story of Chas Worthington, recent heir to one of the richest oil fortunes and most successful corporations in American history. In a defiant act that seems crazy to most and criminal to many, he sheds his former life of wealth and influence to settle the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch, planting his flag and declaring the environmental wasteland a new, sovereign country.

Set upon a floating island of plastic refuse and trash estimated by scientists to be twice the size of Texas, and based on the true-to-life environmental catastrophe currently plaguing the Pacific Ocean, this series will explore a young man’s attempt to tame this terrible new continent with the help of an astounding new technology that could change the face of the energy industry. But first he’ll have to contend with the elements, harmful pollutants, mutated marine life forms that have been exposed to the toxic refuse his nation is built upon, and hostile natives from nearby islands. Looming beyond those immediate physical dangers is the United States government, which sees him as a reckless and dangerous fugitive who needs to be dragged back to the ‘States using whatever means necessary.

Sounds cool, doesn’t it! And the art is gorgeous! Be sure to visit the Kickstarter page and back this project today! Also, backers have access to some exclusive art from the series! Support Great Pacific! The Kickstarter deadline is next week!
