Todd Nauck Firestorm Sketch 2012

I’ve said this before, but its worth repeating… I LOVE TODD NAUCK’S ARTWORK! Something about his superhero style really speaks to me. It’s light-hearted, dynamic, and just darn enjoyable to look at.  If you are unfamiliar with Todd Nauck, he’s well known for his artwork on titles such as: Amazing Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Guarding the Globe, Young Justice, his own creation Wildguard, and many others.

Check out this fantastic red pencil warm up sketch Todd recently posted to his deviantART page! Kirby Krackle!!!

Fury of Firestorm #13, 14 & 15

Wow, last week’s Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #14 was fantastic!!! Dan Jurgens, Ray McCarthy, and Hi-Fi Color knocked this issue out of the park! The action and drama continue to unfold, and the artwork is great! I really like the way they are developing the Firestorm character, as well as Ronnie and Jason’s relationship. It feels like these are strong building blocks to build future stories. If you’d like to read Dan Jurgens thoughts on issue #14, swing over to Comic Book.com and read his recent interview on this issue.

While I’m enjoying the current storyline, I’m getting anxious to see some classic rogues. I hope Dan Jurgens is on the book long enough give us characters like Killer Frost or Multiplex (or maybe even Slipknot). What concerns me is if the series will survive. I’m sure you already know sales were low on the Firestorm series as compared to other New 52 series. Many of us were hoping to see an upward spike in sales with Dan Jurgens arrival on issue #13. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. According to Comic Chronicles, Fury of Firestorm #13 in October had the lowest sales yet. To be fair, these numbers are not completely conclusive. These are solely based upon the sales of Diamond Comic Distributors and doesn’t include other distributors or digital sales. Below is a chart I’ve been using to track the sales of Fury of Firestorm since issue #1.

Fury of Firestorm sales figures

So what does this chart tell us? It’s more important than ever that you get out there and encourage people to try recent issues of Fury of Firestorm! The series features a return to one singular Firestorm, something many long-term fans have been demanding. Well, if they don’t give the newer issues of the series a try, its possible it might not last. So get out there and fan the flame!

Finally, DC Comics recently released a very different cover to The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #15! See the cover below and check it out over on ComicBook.com.

Here are your Firestorm-related Who’s Who entries from this issue…

Commander Steel of the All-Star Squadron drawn by Jerry Ordway! Firestorm met Commander Steel in Justice League of America #207 (Oct. 1982) during the JLA/All-Star Squadron crossover “Crisis on Earth Prime!” Click the image to enlarge.

Cosmic Boy of the Legion of Super-heroes drawn by Richard Howell and Karl Kesel! Firestorm encountered Cosmic Boy while they each battled Brimstone during the Legends crossover (Nov. 1986)! Click the image to enlarge.

Killer Croc drawn by Ed Hannigan and Romeo Tanghal! While Firestorm never tangled with Croc, the villain was created by Gerry Conway and was originally slated to appear in Firestorm vol I #7. At the end of Firestorm vol I #6 (originally unpublished, but recently included in the Firestorm the Nuclear Man trade paperback), you’ll notice the next issue box states, “The Reptile Man!” Gerry Conway confirmed during an interview we did together that he created Killer Croc originally to battle Firestorm, and then repurposed the idea with Batman after Firestorm had been canceled.

Deathstorm LEGO Doodle

Check out this super-fun Black Lantern Firestorm/Deathstorm LEGO drawing by Catanas! Notice the heart he’s holding is a LEGO piece! Sick, twisted, and adorable!

Black Lantern Firestorm/Deathstorm Lego doodle by Catanas

Over at Eurobricks, a LEGO-related site, they are hosting “Superheroes Month!” A talented artist known as Catanas has submitted several cartoons of DC characters in LEGO Minifigure form. In regard to this drawing, the artist said, “I found this one quite tricky actually. A pain to pose and then get the costume right while maintaining a Lego-ish feel!” In addition to Black Lantern Firestorm/Deathstorm, they’ve drawn Supergirl, Star Sapphire, Clark Kent, Hawk & Dove, Hush, Lobo, and more will be posted throughout the month! Each is adorable and really well done!

My thanks to Clark Edwards for sending this my way!
