The Flash S01E14 Post-Game Report – Fallout

I’m still in total shock! After 37 years in comic books and a handful of appearances in animation, we finally got a proper Firestorm in live action!

This week’s episode of The Flash was more than I could of hoped for! I’m not going to spend time recapping the story. You either saw it, or can find a zillion recaps on the web. We’re going to look at the Firestorm-centric elements of the episode. Not surprisingly this article will feature SPOILERS for episode 14 of The Flash!

Robbie Amell and Victor Garber as Firestorm on The Flash

The creators of this television series continue to impress me. Every time I convince myself they will stray from the comic book version of Firestorm, they come right back and give us faithful Firestorm!!! I was floored when Ronnie & the Professor merged to form Firestorm and they were in the classic configuration (Ronnie controlling the body with the Professor as a disembodied voice).

I really enjoyed the emotional scenes with Ronnie & Caitlin, and later with Professor Stein & Clarissa. It was interesting to explore how these characters have changed over the past year and where that may take them going forward. These writers always know exactly which strings to pull to hit you in the feels.

The highlight of the episode for me was seeing a fully-realized and properly-merged Firestorm! Ronnie and the Professor working together as a team was fantastic! When we first heard the disembodied voice of Professor Stein, and then him quickly shouting a warning to “Ronald” about an imminent attack, I got happy-chills. Seriously. I felt the familiar echoes of the old Super Friends cartoon when the Professor would interact with Ronnie (that’s a good thing if you are unfamiliar with the classic cartoon). And the special effects… wow! The FX team on The Flash are astonishingly talented!

Some die-hard fans have expressed concern over Firestorm’s costume (or lack of a costume). Personally, I’m okay with the televised look. While I love the classic Firestorm costume, I’m not sure puffy sleeves and bright yellow would work on television. Robbie Amell said in an interview, “It would be really hard to pull off. Even the Flash costume is a much darker red than it is in the comics. The worry of the Firestorm costume is if it goes the Ronald McDonald route, especially with the puffy sleeves.” Ouch, but I see his point. Additionally, having Firestorm in black makes the fire special effect really pop off the screen. If his costume was lighter in color, it would detract from the impressive fire effect. With the dark colors and “splicer”, I’m good.

Some additional random thoughts:

  • Mental Connection – I loved the mental connection between Ronnie & the Professor. There was always a minor psychic link in the classic comics so this was an exaggeration, but it worked well for the episode.
  • Jason Rusch – We got another mention of Jason Rusch from the F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. project. Hopefully we’ll see more of him interacting with Firestorm in future episodes.
  • Alcohol – Harrison Wells drugged Professor Stein through an alcoholic drink.  In the comics, Stein is a reformed alcoholic. His battle with alcoholism began because Stein struggled with the after-effects of unknowingly being part of Firestorm (gaps in memory, waking up in strange places, etc). I’m not sure if the alcoholic drink was intended as an nod to Stein’s comic book troubles, but it made this old fan happy.
  • White eyes – Even though the white eyes (lack of pupil or iris) is faithful to the comics, I found it a bit unsettling on-screen. Not sure if it was the special effect, or simply the weirdness of white eyes. Maybe they just need to darken the area around the eyeball and enhance the glowing eyes to stand out more (like in the comics).
  • “Ronald” – Having Professor Stein refer to Ronnie as “Ronald” is very faithful to the comics. Love this!
  • Victor Garber IS Professor Martin Stein – We already knew Garber was an excellent actor, but he really nailed the character of Martin Stein! There were minor personality differences, but the spirit and essence was spot-on. That’s quite impressive considering Garber admitted to not reading any of the comic book source material. He wanted to gleam the character solely from the script. My compliments to the script writers and Mr. Garber! Stein is my favorite character in the Firestorm mythos so getting him just right was very important to me.
  • Pittsburgh – So Ronnie and the Professor are heading to Pittsburgh? Nice touch because in the comics they lived in Pittsburgh while Ronnie was going to college. I wonder if that’s a reference to a Pittsburgh-based character or just a throw away nod to the comics. Since they are heading to Pittsburgh, anyone think we might see The Weasel or Moonbow? LOL!
  • Merging – How about that gorgeous special effect of them fusing into Firestorm?!?! Great job by the special effects team!!!

What’s in store for the future of Firestorm? We know Robbie Amell & Victor Garber are scheduled to appear again in the season finale. Can’t wait to see how Firestorm fits into that episode. Beyond that, Firestorm’s future on television is unknown.

In many ways, this week’s episode felt like a back door pilot for a potential Firestorm series. Tons of folks on the interwebs are speculating whether Firestorm will get his own spin-off series. We know there is a spin-off from the Arrow/The Flash universe being discussed, but no other details (lots of murmurs about a possible Atom spin-off from Arrow). It seems unlikely to me that Firestorm will receive his own series, but the show’s creators continue to surprise me. Here’s hoping I’m wrong!

My thoughts about Firestorm on The Flash… coming soon

I was so ecstatic after last night’s episode of The Flash that I feel hungover this morning, and I wasn’t even drinking any booze! I’ve got lots to say about Firestorm on The Flash, but I’m out of time right now. Real world obligations have to come first (my children and my job). I’ll have something posted here in the next day or so. Needless to say, it was AMAZING! Feel free to leave your thoughts/comments here!

More Firestorm on The Flash tonight!

While this week’s trailer didn’t hint much about Firestorm, we know he’ll play a major role! The episode tonight is appropriately entitled, “Fallout” featuring Robbie Amell and Victor Garber as Firestorm! Below are a few stills from the episode.

The Flash with Firestorm - Robbie Amell as Ronnie Raymond and Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow

The Flash with Firestorm - Victor Garber as Professor Martin Stein with Grant Gustin as Barry Allen

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the shot below of Ronnie and Professor Stein face-to-face! Looks like they are about to merge!

Check out this clip featuring Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein clashing over their shared identity. Also, be sure to note that Professor Stein calls Ronnie by the name, “Ronald.” Love that attention to detail from the comics!

So excited for tonight!!! Gleaning what we can from interviews, sounds like this will be the last episode featuring Firestorm for a while. If we’re lucky, we’ll see him again towards the end of the season, but no guarantees.

The Flash S01E13 Post-Game Report – The Nuclear Man

Wow! An entire episode of a live action TV show focused on Firestorm! As a fan for the past 30 years, I hoped for this but never imagined it would actually happen! I’m not going to spend a lot of time recapping the story from last night. You either saw it, or can find a zillion recaps on the web. We’re going to look at this Firestorm-centric episode from the big picture, and focus on a few details.

I believe it goes without saying, but just in case it doesn’t, this article will feature SPOILERS for episode 13 of The Flash!

Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) and Robbie Amell (Ronnie Raymond and Firestorm) on The Flash

Overall, I loved this episode! I’m predisposed to being charitable to Firestorm appearances, but my non-geek wife (an impartial judge) also enjoyed this one. I found myself punching the air and gasping throughout the episode! In addition to the inclusion of the character, I think Robbie Amell and Danielle Panabaker did a phenomenal job selling the strained romance between Ronnie & Caitlin. Really got me “in the feels”. Victor Garber was simply perfect as Professor Martin Stein. We only saw him briefly, but such inspired casting!

From the Comics to the Screen

In the opening scene Firestorm confronts Martin’s old college friend. In the TV episode, the character was named Quentin Quayle and he worked for Concordance Research. In the comics, Martin Stein worked for Quentin Quayle at Concordance Research, and Quentin was a royal jerk. In fact, Quentin fired Professor Stein so I wasn’t too upset when he got injured in the show.

In the show we met Martin’s wife, Clarissa. A similar character exists in the comics, but she’s Martin’s manipulative ex-wife. Clarissa Clemens (returning to her maiden name) was working for a secret organization conspiring to take over the U.S. government. Her hair was colored purple in the comics and she wasn’t above using her “feminine wiles” to further their conspiracy agenda.

Firestorm on TV was different in several ways from the iconic Nuclear Man in the comics. In my opinion, the changes didn’t harm the character. It was a significant departure in many ways, but right now I’m okay with that in order to get the character the exposure needed  to raise his profile. Once he’s established, they can start bringing in more iconic traits. Also, you may be surprised if you re-read Firestorm’s very first appearance from 1977 in Firestorm The Nuclear Man #1. In that first issue, Firestorm is different in some ways than the hero that appeared starting in issue #2. Firestorm in issue #1 was much more of a gestalt being, a merger of Ronnie and Professor Stein, rather than two individual consciousnesses. Check it out.

Firestorm’s Costume

Many people were concerned a few weeks ago when still photos were seen of Firestorm’s “costume”. We saw photos of the sweater Ronnie wore in this episode, with the inclusion of the “splicer”. Robbie Amell was asked about the costume earlier this week. You can find the article over on ComicBook.Com.

I was actually a little upset when they posted the pictures that they did of the costumes. It really just happens to be the jacket that Robbie’s wearing when the splicer’s put on. The splicer is removable in our version of the character. Whatever he’s wearing at the time can be turned into the costume. I’m sure down the road, there will be a legit costume but for the time being, it’s just whatever he’s wearing at the time when the splicer’s put on and then it’s time to go to work, that happens to be the costume. That’s just the clothes that he’s wearing when the splicer goes on. I’m sure down the road, Cisco will make him some sort of fireproof this and – he’ll do something Cisco-y and he’ll have a badass costume.

Hopes for Next Week (and future episodes)

We know we’ll see more of Ronnie Raymond & Professor Stein next week as General Eiling searches for them. Some of my hopes for the episode are:

  • I hope for more scenes with Professor Martin Stein. Victor Garber was so much fun, he deserves more screen time.
  • I hope we’ll see more interaction between Ronnie & Professor Stein while they are merged as Firestorm. So far one personality has been dominate. Perhaps with the “splicer”, they’ll be able to banter back and forth. One of the hallmark’s of the character is their constant bickering.
  • I hope we see the use of Firestorm’s transmutation power. They’ve mentioned transmutation on the show, but so far it’s only been applied to the fusion of Ronnie & Martin. Hopefully they’ll start transmuting elements from one form to another. And then hopefully we’ll get giant rubber ducks to catch people people falling from great heights.
  • I hope for some fun and humor in the Firestorm scenes. Another hallmark of the character is that Ronnie usually revels in being Firestorm. He loves the powers, the flight, and especially the transmutation ability. I’d like to see Ronnie enjoying himself some.
  • I hope we see more of Ronnie & Professor Stein beyond episode 14. Robbie Amell mentioned on The Flash After Show that he’s scheduled to be in the next episode, but then he’s not sure. He’s hoping he’ll be in an episode at the end of the season. Perhaps we need to let the CW know we want more Firestorm in season 2!

So what did you think of the episode?

Firestorm on Infinite Earths — Countdown Arena

CROSSOVER! Everybody loves a crossover! Today FIRESTORM FAN joins the illustrious Super-Blog Team-Up! Several different blogs have combined forces today under the banner of Parallel Worlds and Alternate Realities! Each blog in this crossover will focus on alternate versions of their favorite characters and niches.

Super-Blog Team Up

Today here at FIRESTORM FAN we’re going to feature… well… Firestorm. Specifically the Firestorm characters from parallel worlds that appeared in Countdown: Arena!

Countdown: Arena was a four issue mini-series, published weekly from December 5 thru December 26, 2007. It was written by Keith Champagne, penciled by Scott McDaniel, inked by Andy Owens, and colored by Guy Major. Spinning off of Countdown, the series features Monarch (Nathaniel Adam) as he organizes battles among various characters from the 52 Earths of the Multiverse. Monarch’s secret agenda was to allow the character of Breach to escape the Arena trap, knowing he would recruit additional multiverse incarnations of Captain Atom to battle Monarch. Once this “Captain Atom Brigade” confronted Monarch, he absorbed their powers making himself even more powerful. Finally, he gathered those Arena victors he deemed worthy in preparation for a battle against the Monitors.

I bought this series as it was coming out, however, I had little enthusiasm for the series until actually reading it. I had grown weary of the Countdown saga and expected this to be just another fight-fight-fight book. While there was certainly a lot of fighting, I was pleasantly surprised to find there was a lot to like about this series! First off, Scott McDaniel pencils? Yes, please!! I fell in love with McDaniel’s work on Daredevil several years before, so it was a treat to see him here. Second, there was a decent story and some intrigue in this series. Third, we got to meet Firestorm from Earth 12 and Quantum-Storm from Earth 37!

Quantum-Storm from Earth 37

As mentioned, Monarch (a.k.a. Nathaniel Adam, a.k.a. Captain Atom) was the “big bad” of this mini-series. He gathered numerous characters from around the multiverse and locked them in an Arena to do battle with one another. Monarch carefully selected trios of characters to battle each other (i.e. Batman from Gotham By Gaslight, The Bat from JSA Liberty Files, and vampire Batman from Red Rain). For Captain Atom (alternate versions of Monarch himself), he selected Breach (from the primary DC Earth), Captain Atom of the Atomic Knights (Earth 38), and Quantum-Storm (Earth 37). While these were Captain Atom analogs, Quantum-Storm is actually a hybrid of the Captain Atom concept and the Firestorm concept!

Quantum-Storm was the fusion of Ronnie Raymond and Nathaniel Adam. Adam operated as the on-board adviser, much like Professor Stein did in the original Firestorm. The costume was nearly identical to the original Firestorm outfit, except yellow had been replaced with the same silvery-blue worn by the post-Crisis Captain Atom. We didn’t learn much about Quantum-Storm, but he appeared in all four issues and died heroically trying to defeat Monarch.

Quantum-Storm from Countdown: Arena -- Firestorm from Earth 37

Firestorm from Earth 12

Over on Earth 12, we catch a brief glimpse of this world’s Firestorm. He’s hanging out with a young Green Lantern moments before GL is abducted for the Arena event. On this Earth, Green Lantern is the grandson of Green Lantern Hal Jordan. That implies these are the next generation of heroes. Looking at Firestorm’s costume design and flaming wings, perhaps he is the child (or grandchild) of Jason Rusch and Lorraine Reilly. That’s pure speculation, but I can’t help wondering. Below you’ll find his only appearance. Click to enlarge.

Firestorm from Earth 12 -- Countdown: Arena

Not a lot of Firestorm content, but seeing any parallel version of our favorite Nuclear Man is awesome! If you haven’t read it, pick up Countdown: Arena. It’s well worth your time and money!
