Thank you for the shout-out, gentlemen. However, It was actually Mister Negative Steve who said that Millennium made him stop reading comics for a decade, Hitman being the “one good thing” to come out of “Bloodlines,” building CD shelves, and buying music.

The question about the release of the DC Heroes RPG being delayed to not spoil the Flash death in Crisis #8 was mine however. It would be interesting to hear what others say about that.

And I did listen to the DC Sampler podcast while flying home from Japan. And the studio I worked in was a manhua (Hong Kong comic book) studio. I used to draw backgrounds — I had been told it was good work, but slow work. Then I was shot in the back by a convenience store robber, which made my slow work become slower work, and then “out of work.” Such is life…

And Shag, “nuclear” is pronounced “new clear” all run together. Perhaps you can space out the two words and Rob can edit the pause out.

Until episode 100. Expect a commemorative gift in the e-mail.

    Best,
    Xum

    New-KLEE-ur not NEW-kyoo-ler

Shag is saying it right these days. It’s now the bad way to pronounce it he can’t pronounce. New-klee-ARH ? What’s going on there?!

    NEVER CHANGE, F&W!

OMG I am so excited for episode 100! I picked up the issue you will be featuring in #100 just last year at a con – specifically because of Rob’s enthusiasm for the book! I’ll write more about this in the comments to #100, but for now I’ll just tell you that the book’s high praise from Rob is well deserved. Absolutely perfect anniversary issue, ’nuff said. They don’t make ’em like that anymore, do they??

  4. Kyle Benning says:

I think Shag, incorrectly read some of my feedback and attributed them as feedback from Mr. Gene Hendricks.

I believe the comments about the painted Rampaging Hulk Starlin Cover, Swamp Thing Animated Song, the awesomeness of the 1994 Elseworlds annuals were made by me, not Mr. Hendricks.

Ok nevermind, I guess I got a retroactive introduction. I no longer contribute to the Outhousers, but the Retro Reviews I wrote are probably still available through a site search. Otherwise I will say that many of those articles will reappear in some capacity as well as new articles/essays done in the same vein will be available on a new blog soon! Stay tuned to the Legion Blog for where you can find that when it is up and running.

Excited to hear more Justice League audio commentary goodness is on the way!

    PS Long Live the Legion.

  5. Alright, it seems NOW is the time for me to actually provide some feedback of at least some worth. It’s been awhile and, even though I’m involved in ep 100, I feel as if (by not keeping up with my share of feedback for you guys) I am lax in my duties and thus could become unworthy of future participation.

I’m slowly catching up so forgive me as I launch into a list of Frank-style bullet points (minus the nutso labeling):

    * Supporting myself: The Suit of Souls blog (all about RAGMAN!), the Corps Conjecture blog (related to GL, coming back soon) and The LanternCast (a podcast dedicated to GL of which I’ve taken the wheel of along with my co-host Mark. We’re about to hit our officially numbered #200!). Rather than come up with a snappy script promoting the above, I’ll leave you two to say what you will in support.

    * DC Digests: Although I’ve never owned one, I DO remember getting several of the Archie related ones as a little kid. The format is appealing, without a doubt. I’ve seen a few of these from time to time, I just am interested in actually owning such a small handful of them that it doesn’t seem worth the headache of figuring out how to store them. Like DC Special #4 & #6 are the only ones that stick out to me.

    * Comic Joy: Time and time again there is only ONE selection of comics that rises to the occasion when I’m challenged to reveal my favorite comic storyline. Pay attention Shag, this one is about Kyle Rayner! My favorite story, bar none, is Green Lantern #143 – #150. This is the story where Kyle Rayner FIRST becomes “Ion” (before all of the entity hullabaloo). Kyle somehow draws in the remnants of the green energy left in the sun from when Hal sacrificed himself in Final Night. Kyle essentially becomes a GOD. Watching Kyle enter that level of power impressed me and it impressed me even more when he willingly gave up that power and restarted the Central Power Battery on Oa and brought back the Guardians (but made them little kids so Ganthet could “raise them right). There are several comics I adore, but for whatever reason, this storyline always subconsciously rises to the forefront.

    * Suggestions for the Backup Feature Name (even though I’ll never fit into a large):
    Stand Out Stand Ins!
    Fiery Fill-ins!
    Extra Extras!
    Accessory to fun!
The Fail-safe! (in regards to a nuclear plant backup system)

    * Question about Prisoner of War. Are the ghosts ONLY the ghosts of his comrades from when he was in the service? If they’re fellow fallen soldiers, lost while Prisoner of War was fighting the good fight…couldn’t, theoretically, fallen members of the Others be ghosts he can call to his aide? Just a thought.

Well I know you’re going to peacemeal this one so rather than make it harder to divy up by continuing on, I’ll just stop here and comment more later if I can think something up.

Still here, still listening…and yes, I know what Bloodlines is. I’ve also heard of DC digests. I’ve also heard of (name drop some semi-dated title Shag thinks I was too young to hear about)…

    Chad Bokelman

  6. Michael Chiaroscuro says:

Okay, here are my suggestions for the Backup Feature Name. First is Aquaman-related: BACK STROKES! Second, Firestorm-related: BACK DRAFTS!

    Cheers!

  7. Siskoid says:

    Holy crap, that’s brilliant Michael.

  8. Xum Yukinori says:

Indeed. “Back Strokes and Back Drafts” together sound quite catchy…

  9. Frank says:

    1. I was looking to download some ebooks and digital comics for my trip. Despite repeated tries, I couldn’t get Comixology to accept my account registration, but Amazon worked perfectly, so I’ve been skimming Marvel: The Untold Story as I’ve had free time/haven’t been playing checkers with Death Incarnate. It’s a good book from what I’ve read, but it has the same problems as many others I’ve found in treating the Golden Age as a brief prologue to the Silver Age. Even Gerard Jones’ Men of Tomorrow was mostly about the industry overall and a few key figures within it, and the fellows who lived through that period are dying off quick, so the true history is going to be lost forever.

    2. Chickenfoot

    3. Despite coming across as great guys on the DC Comics Message Board at the time, I used DnA’s Blight story as my jumping off point from the Legion. I’ve only followed the book a couple of times since, never for long.

    4. Very pleased to hear Rob’s been tapped for the Atlantis special features. I’ll have to buy that one so I can tell everyone I know that guy with the big head! The simple fact that they’re doing a feature on Aquaman villains tells me they’re coming from a good place, and bonus materials being better than the actual movie isn’t unheard of with DC.

    5. My understanding is that the Namor movie scripts are in competition, not intended to be synergized, as that would like conflict with WGA rules.

    6. Hearing Rob say “Ma Doc” like MODAM was from Boston makes me shake my head like dudes who still say “Magnet-O.” Sure, it’s comics, but shouldn’t even we have minimum acceptable standards?

    7. You know the term I heard more than any other while touring Windsor Castle? Buck Rowlette. Will always associate one with the other now.

    8. You know, I get a bit peeved when you guys reference episode 50 negatively, because I’ve found it to be one of the strongest of all time, and the only one I revisit unbidden. Yes, it is outrageously long, but one would expect as much from an epic masterpiece of giddy comic book chat. Now that I’ve got a podcast of my own, I can honestly say I’ve done episodes less than a quarter of the length that felt like they were 4.5 hours long, whereas the DC Sampler Trilogy just feels like marathon enjoyment of a comedy season or all the bonus features of a favored film in one sitting. More than a mere podcast, episode 50 is an experience!

    9. Based on what Rob said, the reason he got more comics than me was because I bought a lot of cheap action figures, because I also saved my parents money through my lack of interest in sports/bikes/etc.

    10. Dang, Xum. Just… Dang!

    11. I believe the Lilin were the monstrous children of Lillith from the Midnight Sons titles, which I read a lifetime ago.

    12. Gatekeeper was a three issue prestige mini-series by Tim Truman that acted as a back door pilot for the heroine he created for a Green Lantern Annual that year DC came up with a bunch of new international characters. Bought it cheap a few years ago but still haven’t read them.

    13. Copra got some really good notices, and is on my to-read list. Sorry about Ultimates.

    14. I read Cracked as a kid, as it was a more age-appropriate and less vulgar version of Mad. It ruined John Severin for me though, as I always expect a story he’s drawing to be funny.

    15. I don’t care to pay more than a buck for a back issue, and foregoing full price+ boxes for dirt cheap catch-as-catch-can helps to restore the thrill of the hunt long lost to internet availability.

    16. I have serious misgivings about places Marvel has gone since it was my childhood reading home, but all the stories I read in my youth still “exist” there. DC doesn’t even acknowledge stories I read in 2011. It isn’t just that I can never go home again, but I’m told home never existed and all my memories of it were lies I need to move beyond.

    17. I made it about six issues into Sovereign Seven’s three year run, and always felt sad for the Claremont faithful who stuck with it despite not actually enjoying it (“It got better after Power Girl joined! Not good, but better!”) Still have a holofoil variant I got at a retailer summit, for some reason. Thanks to a convoluted contract, they’ll never be seen again.

    18. I feel sometimes like Rob doesn’t like me. :(
Meanwhile, Shag totally misses the Blues Brothers reference I was razzing him with over his initial failure to satisfactorily pimp The Marvel Super Heroes Podcast (now available on iTunes and easily searchable via our Rolled Spine Podcasts brand.)
You dudes just ain’t hip to what’s good for ya.

    19. I think Gail Simone is one of the best writers in modern comics, but everything that makes her so is ill-suited to Wonder Woman stories. I’m looking forward to getting past the Gotham story for more Sensational Comics.
