  1. During the feedback portion the recent commentary came up and the choice of how low or high the volume of the commentary subject should be. I had a couple of thoughts on this.

    1. I do commentaries in a weird way in the handful of times that I have done them. I usually watch the movie as I go but don’t put that into the actual show. This is mainly due to laziness on my part. It would be a pain in the ass to synch it up, at least I think it would. So I just don’t do it. Not saying that’s the right way to go, just how I roll.

    2. I also try to sway the commentary so the person almost doesn’t have to watch the movie while listening. I know that sounds odd but again it’s just how I do things. I don’t know how this comes off but I haven’t had any complaints yet. Again, not saying this is the only way it can be done, just how I choose to do it.

    3. Shag brought up the subject of copyright. Frankly I look at this as a non-issue at our level of podcasting. We’re fans doing it for the love of the game. I use music and such in my podcasts all the time even though they are copyrighted and such because I am not making any money off of them. It’s not like I charge (or could charge for that matter) for people to download the show. So I figure as long as I am not personally making money or if I do receive donations, etc. they go into the cost of the show and not into my pocket then I should be fine.

    4. Besides, the fact that you are talking over the episodes means that someone can’t really listen to them without your commentary. You are stepping all over the show so it’s not like someone can enjoy it on it’s own.

    Another great show.

I am opening myself up to derision but I did not/have not collected Firestorm or Aquaman in the New 52.

I had heard good things about Aquaman all along and so bought Aquaman and The Others #1. Listening to this podcast, I thought I had a good enough grasp of backstory to be able to jump in.

Dan Jurgens did a good job of making this a ‘first issue’, bringing us solo time for all the members of the Others, letting us know their power set organically, and revealing the origins of those powers. So this was a table setter. I will admit none of these characters seem like instant classics. And while the table is set, I wasn’t drawn in as much as I hoped. I think I’ll grab the second issue to see if now that the exposition/introductions are done, Jurgens is able to run a bit more freely.

While I don’t think I draw as hard a line as Rob, I am also a bit sick of creators looking back at characters’ parents and histories. I love hearing a little of motivation and upbringing. But when it becomes an exercise in minutiae, when the creators bring up every single event from the past, it does pull away from the present.

I think some of this is the need for creators to explain and rationalize why evil people are evil. Lex isn’t evil … he’s misunderstood because he felt trapped by Smallville. Zod isn’t evil .. he just wants order. Even the Grinch has been repositioned to be Grinchy because he was bullied. I miss the days of people being good because it is the right thing to do and people being evil because they are evil.

You want to see a father put through the wringer? Look at Zor-El, Supergirl’s dad. In the last DCU, he was initially portrayed as an overly jealous madman. He sent Kara to Earth to kill Kal-El. He thought people on Krypton were possessed by ghosts and shot up Kara’s high school. He made her parade around him naked as she got into her ship. Brrrr ….

Geoff Johns’ rehabilitated him back to being a smart loving dad who simply tried to save his daughter. But he was then killed … 1 issue later!

In the current DCU, he is back to being conflicted. He did illegal experiments, creating World Killers, experimented on Kara without her knowing it, and shot her into space without letting her or her mother know what he was doing. Now he has been twisted into Cyborg Superman.

    Poor bastard.

Lastly, thanks for the plugs about my Nightshade prank. Too much fun!

Ah, NOW I know who has been hitting up all those smutty websites with my credit cards. 😉 I notice you neither confirmed or denied whether or not I am in fact old enough to confiscate your geek cards.

Another fun one. I haven’t actually received my copy of Aquaman and the Others #1 yet, but figured I’d listen to the episode anyway. Hope I like the comic when it shows up (sometime this week, fingers crossed).

    Some thoughts…

Wonder Woman did have two series in the Golden Age, because we really must count Sensation Comics.

The Others… I did kind of like it even if I dropped Johns’ Aquaman when their storyline started in the main book. Nothing to do with them, of course. Seeing them here, they each feel like they could star in their own short-lived series. I don’t know if that’s a positive or a negative though…

Rob’s ideas for the Bob Haney podcast? I know he was kidding, but I loved them. One step closer to reality!

Chiaroscuro: It was also a Vertigo series about Renaissance artists.

Hey Kids Comics!: You know I’m getting it as soon as I find it available in Canada, right? Its success is but delayed.

  5. Add me to the list of folks who would gladly listen to/and or participate in a Bob Haney podcast!

    Picking up steam…

  7. rob! says:

Welcome to the Bob Haney Podcast! Let us introduce our new co-hosts, Shag Jr and Rob Jr, The Super-Sons! They’ll be gone next week and we’ll never mention them again!

  8. And over at the Denny O’Neil podcast, the Jrs will get publicly dissed and everyone will be told they were a computer simulation! Hilarity ensues!

    Chris

  9. Siskoid says:

The more we kid, the less we’re kidding, guys.

  10. Kyle Benning says:

Rob I can just hear the excitement exuding from you about Aquaman’s second ongoing, it’s awesome and about time DC’s King of the Sea gets his due.

Did Shag really just correct Rob’s pronounciation? Aquaman has 2 ongoing books and now Shag is the master of the english language, will wonders never cease?!?!?!

Hey I like Superboy & the Ravers!

And I’d like to thank you guys again for the great Fire & Water Pin!

Another great episode can’t for next week’s episode!

  11. Arrow is a good show. It’s definitely worth watching. Genre shows always need a little time to get the ball rolling, but now that it’s got a head of steam behind it, the show is very good. And this coming from a guy who has no interest in Oliver Queen as a comic book character.

I hope that if Rob ordered some stuff off of Amazon using Sean’s identity, that he at least used the Amazon link at twotruefreaks.com

Chiaroscuro is also a delicious form grilled Brazilian meat. Right? 😉

@Earth-2 Chris: A digest with printing worse than a Charlton comic? Is that even possible? I have an unhealthy appreciation for Charlton War and Horror comics, but they look like they were printed on a type of sponge cake.

Thanks for the cool show fellas. If only I could listen in my car!

  12. I swear Luke, they were worse than Charlton. Charlton’s stuff did indeed look spongey, but the Marvel digests had horrible, glaring color that couldn’t be contained by any ink lines, and those ink lines were usually just dots that were breaking up. They are damn near illegible.

It was a real shame too, because Marvel Tales had reprinted Amazing Fantasy #15 and ASM #1-50, and then suddenly the reprints jumped over to that crappy Spidey digest. I was heart-broken.

    Chris

  13. Tim Wallace says:

A Steam Award? For me? That’s awesome! Thanks guys!

Shagg was right, I was going for Seuss, but Rob’s Etrigan comment has me thinking…maybe my next one should be a little darker, fit for a demon? I mean if there’s a next one…heck, of course there’ll be a next one, but like the Spanish Inquisition you won’t expect it!

As for Jaime Reyes…as the resident Blue Beetle guy, all I can say is after his book was cancelled he moved to the short lived “Threshold”…and has been MIA since that book ended (unless you count his appearances in “DC Universe vs. The Masters of the Universe”)
