I notice your Justice League recaps don’t refer to the Shazam back-up. I whole-heartedly APPROVE.
Every month is WTF month? Not sure I’d go so far. The Silver Age. Now THAT was WTF month every month.
Topo… I’m sort of disappointed Topo is this big giant monster. I really miss the cute octopus companion that acted as Aquaman’s sidekick/one-man band.
Mera MUST be in her home dimension because they tell her “At last you’ve RETURNED”.
Firestorm’s rogues… Plastique’s accent is French, not French-Canadian. I’m sorry, this is a complaint entirely specific to me, but it always bugs the hell out of me. (Maybe Plastique is the reason Firestorm is big in Canada. We love to hate FLQ terrorists.)
Getting through listener feedback now…
I have the same exact reaction to Lis Sladen passing away, Shag. I’m teary-eyed thinking about it now. I realize it’s a little absurd, with people dying every day, I should be so touched by the passing of a person I did not know personally, but it’s reasonable to say I have it emotionally wrapped-up in my mother’s own passing, from the same cause, at the same exact age. Since then we’ve also lost Caroline John and Mary Tamm, also too young.
I still have that last half-season of the Sarah Jane Adventures to watch, keeping it for a fresh Kleenex box, I guess. Season 4 was my favorite television the year she died, in a year where I watched a lot of fine TV. The show had really hit its stride.
Changing the subject… NOW.
I only recently saw the Sara Jane episode in DOCTOR WHO Season (Series) Two but did not understand the significance of her appearance. I liked her very much, however, and went to read about her on Wikipedia. I was *shocked* to hear that she had died, and then remembered reading about some Doctor Who actress dying a few years ago….and that it must have been her.
I totally understand the emotions expressed by you guys, and I would offer that you guys making these types of “intimate” comments without any reservations is another reason we all feel like we are indeed friends.
Listened to the first part of the episode and enjoyed hearing about the issue 19s. It’s unfortunate that Firestorm is ending, because it sounds like it is hitting the same “throwback” feel that Savage Hawkman is also working at the moment.
Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May every year, same as Hands On Greenville Day (AKA HOG Day) here in Upstate SC, which is a day of service and volunteerism. Which means that I end up toiling all morning on FCBD and then hitting the comic shop while utterly filthy and sweaty. Oy!
I am pretty sure that Khandaq is pronounced “Can-DAK.” That is how it was pronounced in an episode of Justice League Unlimited (a Hawkgirl and Hawkman-centric episode one, oddly).
As far as WTF Month, I generally liked the covers but one of the strange elements is that the covers often spoiled the cliffhanger for the issue. This may seem like an obvious thing for me to say, but the cover to Savage Hawkman was actually quite nice in this respect, because while it does spoil that Hawkman battles Blockbuster, the issue not only starts “in media res” with Carter fighting Blockbuster, but also has a second twist leading to the cliffhanger. Also, the scene on the cover, with Blockbuster ripping off one of Hawkman’s wings, happens in the comic.
I liked the original Topo, but I also enjoyed the octopus-humanoid Topo from Sword of Atlantis! Most people have forgotten about that run, but I enjoyed it.
Over in Firestorm, I was just happy to see the return of Typhoon. Such a visually great character, even with his modified look. Would be a perfect character for a Brave And The Bold issue with Aquaman and Firestorm.
Listening to the Listener Feedback now, thanks again for the great show fellas.
1) Pepsi Max is the official no calorie heart stimulating beverage of a Diabolucal nation.
2) Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the k-ring come into existence because Lex Luthor uncovered some kryptonite and wanted a means of keeping Superman at bay when in his presence? Didn’t said ring cause Luthor to develop an incurable cancer, fake his own death, and return in a cloned body as Alexander Luther II? Wasn’t it given to Batman as part of an early Post-Crisis crossover? Doesn’t that open a whole can of worms in the New 52, which continues to cherry-pick bits of old continuity without bothering to deal with the ramifications or even offering altered details that could themselves form the basis of bold new interpretations?
3) Despero had a lavender gray cape during his first appearances after exposure to the Flame of Py’tar, along with a full “Sheriff of Nottingham” get-up. He discorporated at the end of that tale, and spent years willing himself back together into a nude body with no visible genitalia. He landed at the U.N., and after unintentionally snagging their flag, turned it into a cape and general sign of contempt toward mankind. He later donned fatigues and a team uniform as part of the Justice League Task Force. The animated series Justice League, Batman: Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice have all featured different versions of Despero, all fully clothed.
Meanwhile, in Geoff Johns comics, Despero keeps running around naked in blue capes like it was still 1990 and not specific to a single story arc. So no, I’m not as thrilled about an unimaginative repeat in the new JL comic as I could be, but it thankfully is not Despero’s first encounter with the group either (as revealed by Steve Trevor and Amanda Waller in JLofA #1.)
4) Well, NuTopo took something vaguely resembling imagination, I guess.
5) I don’t think Rob’s “quiet time” break is going to work, since it punishes the innocent with the guilty, and basically has all the sting of the impotent parenting techniques that led to “Backdoor Teen Mom” Farrah Abraham. Thanks for contributing to the decline of Western Civilization, Robbbert J. Kelly esq.
6) I’m upset about Firestorm #19 because instead of a rogues buffet, it’s more like a nursing home puree of numerous barely identifiable elements into technically edible sludge. Speaking of jock-blocking, is it better for Dan Jurgens to insert his cobbled together versions of these characters in a haphazard manner over a span of two issues, or for follow-up creators to have the opportunity to reintroduce them in the space and manner of their choosing at a later date? Plus, Jurgens chose the lazy route of giving Firestorm “blind spots” where his powers don’t work on the villains, instead of improving the rogues so that they would offer a greater threat to other heroes. Basically, Jurgens de-powered Firestorm to make his old timey bad guys functional, a disservice to everyone involved. Easily the worst Killer Frost incarnation, BTW. Jury’s out on the rest.
7) I can’t remember if Shag ever seriously read Captain Atom. It would seem like a safe assumption, given Pat Broderick’s involvement, but I can’t recall Shag ever being especially positive about Nathaniel Adam. Then again, recognizing Dr. Megala and General Eiling shows definite familiarity. To me, Major Force was the first Venom– the extremely dark and violent post-modern negative version of a hero, and I’ve always appreciate him as an irredeemable brutal misogynist government thug from a time when they weren’t a dime a dozen. Does he exist in the New 52 yet?
8) I totally thought #50 would be your shark jumping moment, and instead it fell back asswards into listener accolades. Diabolu will now have to come up with a new plot to destroy this infernal podcast once and for all! I will also state that despite appearances, not a one of us were actually sippin’ on some sizurp. Maybe #75 will be a truly inebriated episode?
9) G.I. Joe Extreme lasted several animated seasons and toy line waves. Manhunters of the Barren Mars would surely have comparable success in market penetration and sculpting to Remco’s Mighty Crusaders line.
10) Waiting for that third stinger was as interminable as the one in Iron Man 3. I watched the Wildfire intro, which was so horrible that I washed the taste of it out with the Defenders of the Earth link on YouTube.
…Elisabeth Sladen… one of my first crushes… I feel your pain, man. RIP Sarah Jane.
@Frank, I don’t know that “two” counts as “several” seasons, especially since they were 13 episode seasons compared to 26 episode seasons of the Sunbow ad DiC cartoons. The only aspect of GI Joe Extreme which has carried over is the presence of Iron Klaw on the GI Joe Collector’s Club Figure Subscription Service.
I still love those Remco MOTU-style figures, including the Warrior Beasts!

It’s funny, I’m sitting here listening to you guys read my feedback about how I’m a few episodes behind and need to get caught up, while ACTUALLY being behind AGAIN!! Yeah, #52 came out a couple of days ago, and I’m just listening to 51. Guess I overdosed on 50 and needed a break.
And yes, I am Canadian, AND I have two kids. But don’t worry, Shagg. Neither of them even know what Captain Carrot is, or care much about any of my geeky likings, so they should be okay. In fact they are currently huddled in the corner staring blankly into their iPods, while contemplating whether to spend 23 or 24 hours of their day playing Halo 4 on the XBox. So as you can see, I am raising kids with the same values as the rest of the kids on the planet these days. Read?? What the hell is that? 😉
Another great episode of The Hordak Ate It podcast! Keep it up! Roll on 52!
