Thanks Shagg and Robb for the many shout-outs and the kind words about my lil’ art piece! I will ink and color it when or if you finish off the Super-Powers special!
Well now that I have successfully held you guys up for ransom, let me just comment on the latest episode…

Two Words… Loved It! I love tangent episodes, fun to listen to, and can be educational aswell. I learned quite abit about Star Trek and Genen Rodenberry.

I really appreciate Robb giving George Lucas major props for donating a large majority of the $4.05 Billion to education. A very praise worthy, charitable and selfless act I feel. Usually at the mention of George Lucas’s name, you hear a collective moan from the internet. So it was a welcome change.
I know I will get slammed hard for this, and possibly be disowned by the Steam Team, but… I actually dont mind the Star Wars prequels. I found them quite fun and entertaining to watch! And yes, I have been a Star Wars fan since the 80’s. They may be CG heavy, but I like them quite abit.

Also Hats off to Robb for his great work on raising money for those affected by hurricane Sandy. Very kool bro!

Lastly, cant wait for my Steam Award to arrive. It will look great next to my fictitious Noble Peace Prize!

Keep up the great work guys. Fan the Wave and Ride the Flame!

  3. Siskoid says:

Listening now, fun conversation…On a good, back to basics Hawkman comic… Have you seen Joe Kubert Presents? The main story is Hawkman, Hawkman by the man who introduced us to Thanagar in the first place. And it’s AWESOME.

For me, Hawkman has to be about DC’s sexiest couple. This whole “Romeo and Juliet curse through various reincarnations” has completely destroyed the character’s appeal.

  4. Sean Koury says:

Count me in the group of SW fans who also is a teensy bit worried about the future of the Expanded Universe. I’m hoping the new movies are only going to have Luke etc in small cameos, and making it fit with the EU won’t be a big deal. There have been some encouraging words from some of the people “in the know” that making things fit as much as possible is in fact being worked on. We’ll have to wait and see.

And damn straight!!! Where’s my Captain Carrot car? LOL! That was great, guys. Thanks for the belly laugh. It was pretty much the last thing I was expecting to hear when I listened to the episode. Catain Carrot car. Now I have to dig out the back issues and see if CC had a Carrotmobile.

Can’t wait for the next one. :)

  5. Luke says:

“This whole “Romeo and Juliet curse through various reincarnations” has completely destroyed the character’s appeal.”

@Siskoid, you mean the concept which was introduced in Flash Comics #1 in Hawkman’s first appearance? The reincarnation angle is not some modern trapping. It literally was there in the first like 5 Hawkman pages ever created.

Thanagar was a radical retcon concept some 20+ years after the character became a long running star feature. And Kubert was already very familiar with the Hawks, having drawn them extensively in the Golden Age.

And considering that Hawkman never sold anywhere near as well as he did in Volume 4, which was the modern one by Johns and Robinson, which dealt heavily with the reincarnation angle, I don’t think it is accurate to say it has destroyed his appeal.

Personally, I think the problem is that writers try to address too much and make the character overly complicated. Say what you will about Savage Hawkman (and lord knows folks on the Internet have), but when the series streamlines the concept, the comics are good. When it gets too involved in the details and the minutae, it drags. Hawkman’s continuity is so egregious that it’s easy to get stuck in the thorn bushes with him instead of just telling stories about the Winged Wonder smashing Matter Master with a mace. The New 52 may have been the best thing to happen to Hawkman since the Silver Age insofar as it jettisoned a lot of stuff which confused the heck out of a lot of people (Fel Andar, anyone?).

And Shag, by your own admission you did not read any of the Liefeld issues. You want to talk about taking the character back to basics and not worrying about the minutae and telling fast paced and fun stories? That’s Savage Hawkman under Liefeld. Issue #11, for example, was a classic done in one issue where Hawkman battled a new foe named St. Bastion. It was a perfect example of what an action-heavy character like Hawkman’s book should be.

Now the title has transitioned to Frank Tieri as the writer, whom I also think is a good fit. He knows how to tell fast and action-packed stories which tie into the overall larger story.

All this having been said, I need to get back to the foothills because I have a good lead a ripe vein of GOOOOOLD which I need to go pan for. More after I become RRRRRICH! Whoa-oh nelly, hot dang, hooo!

  6. Siskoid says:

Frank: In no way was I speaking for the world in my comments. I meant that it destroyed his appeal FOR ME. It’s all very well and good to go back to the Golden Age, but my favorite Hawkman is the happily married space cop.

I liked it when we had both, mind you, but when they tried to combine every Hawkman concept ever into one, that’s when it went off the rails. Again, for me.

  7. Luke says:

@Siskoid: You seriously just called me Frank.

You seriously just called me Frank.

    Seriously.

    You called me Frank.

    Seriously. For serious.

    Wow. Just wow.

Anyway, that’s a totally fair assessment. That’s the other problem for Hawkman, there are 4 totally valid interpretations of him (5 now, I guess), and they don’t jive well with one another. Either he’s human, or he’s alien, and from a peaceful planet or a military planet, and he’s either brainy or barbarian, and so on and so forth.

Ah well. I’m enjoying the book currently, so I am a happy Hawkfan for the time being.

    Also: GOOOLD!

  8. Shag says:

    Thanks for all the comments!

@Keith – Congrats on your Steam Award! It’s as tangible as steam itself. :) You enjoyed the Star Wars prequels that much? Maybe they are better upside-down (you are on the bottom half of the world after all).

@Luke – Thanks for being such a great sport! LOL! Dangnabit!

@Siskoid & @Luke – My personal favorite incarnation of Hawkman was the James Robinson/Geoff Johns version. It had lots of back story, but they cleansed much of the more complex items. They stuck with the reincarnation as the primary continuity point, without contradicting any of the other continuity. Well done. Shame that series quickly spiraled downwards once Johns left.

@Sean – EU FTW! Give me Jana, Jacen, Ben, Mara, Corran, Thrawn, Pellaeon, and Fey’lya!

Finally… Siskoid called Luke “Frank”! Priceless! :)

  9. Frank says:

    1. I enjoy the simplicity of the official podcast header too much to desire a replacement, but if it goes that way, Keith Samra’s done a damned fine job of it.

    2. I adored Star Wars as a kid, dutifully watched each prequel feature once at the theater, and now have no interest in the franchise. 100% behind Rob on Brad Bird directing, as opposed to “stylists.” Save that for hairdressing, because in my experience, the more distinct the style, the more grounded it because in a specific place and time while turning ever more tiresome. Chris Nolan would be terrible on Star Wars, where Jon Favreau would be discrete perfection.

    3. I saw the parts of Star Trek: The Motion Picture that I could stay awake for at the theater, on broadcast television, and on DVD. I have never in any of those attempts made it through more than a quarter or so without passing out, as recently as a couple of years ago. There’s no better sleep aid in my experience. At least I’m still a passive fan of this franchise, having enjoyed the recent movie and some of the TV series, most especially DS9.

    4. Cyborg can have an ugly ass KIA. Martian Manhunter got a Ford race car a few years back.

    5. I never get invited by Newsarama or Comic Book Resources to write anything. Maybe I shouldn’t refer to comic creators and their work with f-bombs, c-spray, and dirty pictures of people’s mothers?

    6. When are you guys going to have Luke on? He’s got major podcasting experience and a Hawkman book to talk about for another few months. Best hurry up!

    7. Actually, there was no Luke in the Ghosts crossover. Sorry, Luke. I’m glad I chided Chad into getting Ragman in there, though. Anyway, I tried to stay on Rob’s model in doctoring my Johnny-Come-Lately characters into the crossover graphic. It worked pretty well with Chuck Patton’s Vixen, but the proportions on the Gibbons Creeper and Dillon Atom were all wonky. Should’a made Ray small and stuck him on somebody’s shoulder. I still need to finish reading everybody’s blog posts, plus the Black Canary blog.

    8. I like how it took the both of you to run down a list of my blogs, even if Rob couldn’t get the names right, and the red-headed stepchild …nurgh… sulked from its lonely playground hobby seahorse. Anyhow, I suppose Rob’s “cheerleading” has elevated my appearance on the show from David Niven to George Lazenby, but I suspect Shag is correct in assuming that a repeat would just assure everyone that Timothy Dalton is out of my reach. Mostly though, I’d like to hear Robb fight with Shagg over whether he gets to be Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan or Danial Craig. Shag is obviously Roger Moore.

    9. Second Siskoid on preferring the Hawks as a couple more than the individual components. Aquaman doesn’t need Mera, but Katar really does require Shayera to work, in my book.

    10. Shag is a bigger Vibe booster than me, but I did write an essay on his book’s announcement, and can see the point. I’d still prefer The Vixen: Lady Fox, but it’ll do.

    11. DC Challenge Podcast? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe? Is it safe?

  10. Shag says:

    @Frank – Time for one quick follow-up comment…

I am SOOO Pierce Brosnan. Not a fan of Roger Moore myself. Comparing me to Roger Moore is really going to help your chances of a reappearance on the show. 😉

    Thanks!
    Shag

  11. Sean Koury says:

Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention regarding this episode. You have NO IDEA how thrilled I am to have my last name join the lexicon of words that Shag has trouble pronouncing correctly. :)

    Corey

    Corey

    Corey

As in “I wear my sunglasses at night Corey Hart”.

    Hope that helps. hehe

  12. Siskoid says:

    Luke: Sorry!

Shag: Calling people Frank is apparently contagious!

  13. Keith Samra says:

Thanks Frank, I really appreciate the kind words.

Shagg, seriously bro, try watching the prequels again, while doing a handstand… It will give you a whole new outlook :p

Seiously, am the only one that likes the prequels???

  14. cリnical says:

Yes. You are the only one who likes the prequels. Although, I thought Episode III was kinda fun, horrid dialogue and “NOOOOOOOOOOO” aside.

Vibe is getting his own book. I just… I don’t even know anymore.

Geoff Johns’ run on Hawkman is my all-time favorite run on the character. I wish with all that is within me that they had kept that continuity in the new 52. Oh well, can’t win ’em all.

  15. Sean Koury says:

Keith, I liked the prequels. I don’t understand the hatred towards them. Personally, the Phantom Menace needed some work, but the other two, IMO, were fine movies. Especially Revenge of the Sith.

I chalk it up to people being older, and expecting to capture the same feeling the original movies gave them as kids, and being unable to get that feeling.

My kids love them, so that’s what’s important.

  16. Keith Samra says:

Finally Im not alone… Thanks Sean, I was starting to think I was some sort of a Bizzarro version of a Star Wars fan for liking the prequels…

Then again, I also have fond memories of Superman IV aswell, you know the one with the “almost” live action version of Firestorm… And you cant say it wasnt Shagg… His name was the Nuclear Man after all!

See I found a loophole Shagg, so you cant take away my Match Head Card.

  17. Luke says:

On a more serious note I did want to thank you guys for plugging #WarComicsMonth, which is still going on. Everyone please feel free to tweet and post about your favorite War comics and characters in honor of the men and women in uniform in the month of November.
