Looking to the future with FURY OF FIRESTORM #9

The solicitation was released two weeks ago for The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #9 shipping in May. With all the excitement of Plastique Week and the release of issue #6, we haven’t had a chance to talk about this solicitation yet. BIG NEWS — issue #9 features a crossover with Justice League International! Not only does Firestorm get one of the first crossovers of The New 52, but it’s with one of my favorite other books! Check out the super-fun cover below by Ethan Van Sciver!

Jason is looking pretty chummy with the new Firehawk. Is he ditching Tonya for this nuclear babe? Here is the solicitation:

• Don’t miss this crossover with JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #9!

• RONNIE seeks information – but is the price he must pay too high?

Now, keep in mind Justice League International #9 comes out before Fury of Firestorm #9. So be sure to pick up JLI #9 on May 2 for the first part of this story.

In preparation for this crossover, Yildiray Cinar has been practicing drawing the JLI characters. He’s posted a few of his sketches to Twitter for us Match-heads to enjoy. Below is a sketch Yildiray did of Guy Gardner.

Ethan Van Sciver saw the sketch and decided to ink the image. Below is Ethan Van Sciver’s inks of Guy Gardner over Yildiray Cinar’s pencils. Enjoy!

How cool is that?!?! I’d love to see Ethan Van Sciver ink Yildiray Cinar’s work on a full comic. That would be awesome! According to Yildiray on Twitter, he’ll be penciling the cover to The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #10 with Ethan providing the inks!

I’m really looking forward to these crossover issues! I love me some Firestorm, and I love me some JLI! Can’t wait!

Every time I look at that cover, I notice the bizarre foreshortening on Booster’s outstretched left arm. Why is Booster’s hand, which is half his body length closer to the viewer, smaller than his head? Does he being squeezed so hard that his head is blowing up like some stress toy? And just how far apart are Booster and OMAC, anyway? Is Booster reaching out for Firehawk?

Since I typically hate Hi-Fi’s overwrought lighting effects — less is more, people: looking at your work is like staring into the sun — I find it ironic that on an image where I kind of like Hi-Fi’s quasi-Marvel Age pop-art effects, I can’t get over an apparent shortcoming of the primary artist.

But I’ve got no complaint on that sketch of Guy Garner. That looks fantastic.
