Recently on Facebook, artist CrissCross posted several of his concept drawings for Firestorm. These were done back in 2003 as they worked to develop the look Jason Rusch would eventually debut in Firestorm vol. III (May 2004). You’ll find six versions below that are breathtaking and wildly different from the final design. Click each image to enlarge so you can see all the intricate detail. According to CrissCross, “I had a particular vision for a Quantum Man, not a Nuclear one.”

Each design is gorgeous and exploding with creativity! These are so cool, I hope CrissCross re-purposes these designs elsewhere. I love them all, but if I had to pick a favorite for Firestorm, I’d probably go with Version 7. How about you?

Starting with version #5 below, you’ll notice CrissCross references Jim Lee’s Firestorm designs. I’m guessing he’s referring to Jim Lee’s designs from 2003 that later appeared in Wizard Magazine. Click here to see Jim Lee’s designs.

Firestorm, albeit a bizarre alternate reality incarnation, is set to appear today in Superman/Batman #84. Here is the solicit from DC Comics:

Superman must help the JLA of the future – Aquaman, Klarion the Warlock, Traci 13, Stanley and His Monster, Scream Queen and Jason Blood – in preventing Morgaine le Fey from traveling back in time to our era and destroying the sun! But Batman insists that you can’t change the past, and, well, Batman is kind of always right, so . . . hello, eternal darkness? Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and ChrisCross bring “Sorcerer Kings” to a sun-shattering conclusion!

Check out these preview pages from Comic Book Resources:

What the heck is Firestorm saying? Anyone have an idea? And what an interesting redesign for the character! Very original!

The art in this book is done by ChrisCross, the initial artist for Firestorm vol 3. ChrisCross was integral in the development of Jason Rusch’s original Firestorm look. It’s nice to see him working on everybody’s favorite Nuclear Man again!

My thanks to Brandon Leonard for sending me a heads-up about this appearance!

In the meantime, it’s time for more original Firestorm pages from our friend Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog. He happens to own several of the original Firestorm pages and has been kind enough to allow me to publish scans of them here. I’ve been horribly negligent in publishing his more recent acquisitions, so I’m playing catch up today. Jon’s been a great contributor to FIRESTORM FAN and my thanks go out to him. You may view scans of his entire art collection online by clicking here.

Below is an amazing shot from the series 52. This is page three from issue #24 featuring Firestorm’s attempt to create a new Justice League. It was drawn by Phil Jimenez with inks by Andy Lanning. Such a wonderful shot of a truly quirky team. I love every character in this group!

Below are two preliminary sketches by Matt Haley as he tried to figure out the design for the cover to Firestorm vol III #11.

Below are two pages from Firestorm vol II #19. These were drawn by the legendary Gene Colan. The second page was even signed by the artist!

The following page is a nice piece from Firestorm vol II issue #30 by penciller Rafael Kayanan and inker Romeo Tanghal.

These next two pages come from Firestorm vol III issue #5 and were penciled by ChrisCross and inked by Keith Champagne. In these pages, Firestorm meets Superman and the Flash for the first time.

This next one is from Firestorm vol III issue 11 and features a great shot of Killer Frost. This was drawn by penciller Dale Eaglesham and inker Wade von Grawbadger.

The next page is from Firestorm vol III issue 12 and features the return of the Ronnie Raymond Firestorm! In this shot he’s chasing down his long-time foe Multiplex. This nuclearrific page was penciled by Jamal Igle and inked by Rob Stull.

The page below is from Firestorm vol III issue 22 and features the fusing of Jason Rusch and Professor Martin Stein. This page was penciled by Eddy Barrows and inked by Rob Stull.

Finally a nice quiet diner scene from Firestorm vol III issue 32. This one was penciled by Jamal Igle and inked by Keith Champagne. Be sure to watch for the characters in the background!

My thanks again to Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog for providing me with theses scans to publish!

Welcome to the second installment of FIRESTORM FAN’s Nuclear News! Lots of Justice League related news this time around.

Trinity #35 just hit the stands yesterday. As I’ve mentioned previously, Firestorm (Jason/Gehenna) has been featured regularly in the Trinity series. I can’t vouch for issue #35 (as I haven’t read it just yet), but Firestorm has played an important role throughout the series.

Justice League of America #29 shipped last week. While it’s a flashback issue and doesn’t feature Firestorm, it was drawn by CrissCross. CrissCross was the first artist on Firestorm volume III, and therefore the first artist to draw the Jason Rusch Firestorm.

The Justice League of America team is about to go through a major shake-up. They will be losing Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Here is an article at Newsarama with writer Dwayne McDuffie discussing the changes. Let’s hope Firestorm stays on the team through these changes.

Justice League of America: The Second Coming HC reprints Justice League of America #22-26 and is scheduled for release on May 6, 2009. This volume includes a brief appearance by an alternate reality Firestorm known only as “WE ARE FIRESTORM”.

Dwayne McDuffie recently stated on his own forum that we will see more of Jason Rusch and Martin Stein in a future story line. Additionally, he said that “WE ARE FIRESTORM” will appear again.

According to Dwayne McDuffie’s blog, this summer will see the release of a softcover edition of Justice League of America: The Injustice League. This softcover will reprint the JLA Wedding Special and Justice League of America #13-16. This is the story where the Jason Rusch Firestorm is “recruited” by Batman for the Justice League. The hardcover of this story was released last summer.

Furious Firestorm is a new website from Mr. Jamester. The site is dedicated to our favorite match-head and features lots of images, pictures, and even a few videos. Check it out!

As we’ve noted here previously, Ronnie Raymond will return as a Black Lantern during the Green Lantern story, Blackest Night. DC has solicited a few Blackest Night action figures already. Over at Frank Delano’s Martian Manhunter blog, The IDOL-HEAD of DIABOLU, you can see a glimpse of the Black Lantern Martian Manhunter. Wow, icky. Makes me somewhat nervous about how Ronnie Raymond will look as a Black Lantern.

Also over at The IDOL-HEAD of DIABOLU, Frank has put together a great resource covering the relationship between Martian Manhunter and Firestorm. He discusses their interactions as well as provides a number of links to other Firestorm-related posts on IDOL-HEAD. Definitely worth your time to check this out!

Pat Broderick (the first artist on Firestorm volume II) is scheduled to appear at Florida Supercon in Miami JUNE 5-7, 2009.

As always, check out the Firestorm section of the DC Comics Message Board for Firestorm-related discussion.
