In one of the stranger merchandising moves, Firestorm is helping to sell Mexican ice cream! Below you’ll find a photo of Aurrera brand chocolate flavored ice cream, emblazoned with the Justice League logo and images of the Cheetah and Firestorm. I’m guessing the white hand around the corner is either Solomon Grundy or Bizarro. Firestorm art by Ed Benes.

Aurrera is the house brand for “Bodega Aurrerá”, a chain of Mexican discount stores owned by Walmart. Essentially this ice cream is the Mexican equivalent of Walmart’s “Great Value” brand. This is the only evidence I’ve found online of the promotional partnership between Aurrera and DC Comics. My thanks to megacityfour over on Instagram for this info!

So, the guy with flaming hair is pimping ice cream? And the Justice League is represented by Firestorm and the Cheetah? What, did Superman and Batman have the day off? Wouldn’t the character of Vibe have made a little more sense? Oh well, we Match-heads will happily take the exposure for the Nuclear Man!

Support Firestorm (and Mexican brand chocolate ice cream, apparently)! Fan the flame!

In honor of the current storyline taking place in France in The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men, let’s check out some French Firestorm comics! Faucon Noir (translated as Black Hawk) was a French comic collection published bi-monthly in digest format during the late 1970s. Issue #12 was released in 1979 weighing-in at a whopping 130 pages and featured several characters, such as Hawkman, the Justice Society, Firestorm and more. This issue reprinted Firestorm: The Nuclear Man vol I #3 by Gerry Conway and Al Milgrom. As you’ll see below, the publisher chose the splash page from that issue for the cover. Strange choice as it makes Firestorm appear pretty threatening.

No kidding, this product was produced in Argentina and distributed as part of the Super Amigos line. Our good buddy Jon from the Fizzit blog sent us pictures of his own cube. He included the teeny-tiny Action League characters to provide a sense of scale. This is a small cube!

Below is a photo of the exterior package. The cube is identified as a “Skill Game” and “Rubik’s Cube with Your Favorite Characters”.

Below are the contents of the package. You have to assemble the cube yourself and put on the stickers.

After getting a good look at this insanity… I desperately want one! Someone on eBay is selling several different character cubes from the Super Amigos line. If you’re interested in seeing the others, please click here.

How about a little Firestorm elemental action … in Arabic!

Our good buddy Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog made an fascinating discovery recently. He bought some Superman comics translated into Arabic for a friend who’s learning the language. As he was flipping through a comic he purchased and stumbled across Firestorm! Arabic Superman #703 (1992) featured a reprint and translation of Action Comics #666 (1991). Below you’ll find the Arabic cover, followed by the original American cover.

The Elemental Firestorm appeared on two interior pages. The interesting part is that Arabic reads right to left. Therefore all the pages are flipped to their mirror-image, and the back page is the start (exactly like manga, if you’re at all familiar with that). Below you’ll find the Arabic Superman pages in black and white, followed by the corresponding American pages in color.

I wonder if reversing the art caused any problems for the readers. For example, if you look above you’ll notice Superman’s “S” shield is reversed. Now the Arabic language doesn’t even feature our version of the letter “S”, so it’s probably a non-issue. However, I can’t help wondering. By the way, this entire issue was a sort of dream/trance sequence, so Firestorm appearance was just imagined by Superman.

My thanks again to Jon at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog for providing me with theses scans to publish! Jon has supplied FIRESTORM FAN with numerous scans over the past few years, including Firestorm comics translated into Spanish! Jon is also quite the collector of original Firestorm artwork. You may view scans of his entire art collection online by clicking here.

Back in 1990, Firestorm was featured in a Spanish reprint comic entitled DC Premiere. While DC Premiere ran 18 issues, Firestorm only appeared in two of them. If I understand correctly, these two issues reprinted Firestorm #90-93, the four issues that made up the “Elemental War”. Other series reprinted in DC Premiere include: Doctor Fate, Hawk & Dove, Phantom Stranger, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Doom Patrol, and Suicide Squad. Great choices!

The scans below come compliments of our good friend Jon at Fizzit, the Firestorm-themed blog.

Below you can see a side-by-side comparison between the American version and the Spanish version. The most noticeable difference is the Spanish edition is printed on better paper. That paper really helps the colors pop off the page! I’m jealous! Click each image below to enlarge.

Near as I can figure there were only five issues of Superman’s Freunde and each featured a different hero, so this may have been the only appearance by Firestorm in the series.

My thanks to fellow Firestorm fan Florian Schwalenberg for sending this my way!

¡Firestorm, el hombre nuclear, de los Super Amigos!

Our good friend Jon over at the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog sent scans of these unique Firestorm collectibles. He received the following cards from Argentina. The majority of these come from the Spanish-language version of Kenner’s Super Powers line, Super Amigos.

This first one is a trading card from the Super Amigos game. To see all the cards in the Super Amigos card set, please visit the Aquaman Shrine by clicking here.

The next five are stickers associated with the Super Amigos line. It appears these were produced from 1985 through 1987.

This last sticker uses specialized ink that really is intended to be viewed under blacklight.

These next ones come from some Superman-related set. This set was released in 1994. Nice to see the Elemental Firestorm getting some merchandise action!

Here are some Firestorm stickers from that same 1994 Superman series.

These next two come from a set entitled “Cartas de Poder – DC Super Heroes”. I really don’t know anything about these sets, but I love that they called Firestorm “el hombre nuclear”. Also, he’s got an attack of 2,700 and a defense of 2,300! I have no idea what the scale is, but that sounds impressive!

Once again, our thanks to Jon from the Fizzit Firestorm-themed blog for supplying these images.
