• Be sure to pick up Brightest Day #6 from your local comic shop.  We finally see the new Firestorm in action!

• Not much Firestorm news came out of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) this year.  I’ve only come across two news items, both toy related.  I’ve outlined them below, click here for the full scoop on Mattel’s panel at SDCC on DC toys.
  • The Batman: Brave and the Bold Action League is being re-branded into the DC Universe Action League.  The line will now have added articulation and feature characters from all over the DCU. A DC Universe Action League pack containing Firestorm and Black Lantern Firestorm has been announced.  No specific release date identified.  I gotta assume this re-branding is being done to compete with Marvel’s highly-successful Super Hero Squad.
  • The Justice League Unlimited Firestorm action figure (featured here previously) will be repackaged in a three-pack with Killer Frost and the Angle Man.  Watch for that in early Spring 2011.  I don’t have a Killer Frost figure, so that will be nice.  An Angle Man figure… really?  Lovely.

• Just before Comic-Con, Geoff Johns had a few things to say about Brightest Day over on Comic Book Resources.  Check out the Firestorm bits below:

CBR: Allen Thornton noted that many people, he included, missed a very significant clue in “Blackest Night” #8 that Deadman was the new White Lantern. It wasn’t until it was mentioned to him that he saw the White Ring on his finger, which he then mentioned to a friend, passing the awareness on. His question is was there any other subtle clues like that in “Blackest Night” and “Brightest Day” that he and others may have missed and once they’re revealed will cause a collective head slap? And if there are clues, are you surprised that people are not seeing them?

GEOFF JOHNS: There are clues for just about everything. There are clues about Firestorm. His story is just beginning and where Jason and Ronnie go, you can go back to “Blackest Night” and see some seeds that will be touched on. The stories were really set up because we knew we were going to be doing a lot with Jason and Mera post-“Blackest Night” and “Brightest Day,” so you should go back, and check out what was planted, especially with Mera and Firestorm, but there are other things too, with the White Lantern, specifically. The history of what the White Lantern is doing on Earth and where it’s going and what’s happening to it now, all comes to light in #7.

• Brightest Day cover artist David Finch addressed characters he finds difficult to draw during an interview with Comic Book Resources.  Here is the quote relevant to Firestorm:

CBR: Are there any heroes that you find particularly tricky or difficult to draw?

DAVID FINCH: Characters that have very structured costumes, as opposed to more anatomical ones are always challenging for me. I always struggle with characters that have energy powers, too. Firestorm is a great character, but I always feel like I’m fighting with my drawings of him.

• The DC Source Blog revealed the Return of the Black Lanterns will appear in October.  No one is really sure what that means yet, but Black Lantern Firestorm is featured in the promotional image.

• It’s been announced that the DC Direct Brightest Day Firestorm action figure will be part of the second wave of Brightest Day figures. Therefore it should ship in April 2011.

• Get your own Firestorm magnet over on SuperHeroStuff.com!  Looks like someone colored the Ed Benes Firestorm sketch and then slapped the original comic book logo on it.  You can get this magnet for $4.99 plus shipping (and the shipping ain’t cheap).

• While Firestorm foes Summer Day and Dr. Jivan Shi may be deceased, the Hyena curse lives on!  Several were-hyenas appeared in Zatanna #2, written by Paul Dini and drawn by Stephane Roux and Karl Story.  My thanks to tigner02 on the DC Comics Message Board for pointing out this appearance. • Firehawk made a one-panel cameo in Justice League of America #45, written by James Robinson and drawn by Mark Bagley, Rob Hunter, and Norm Rapmund.  Notice below she’s wearing one of her older costumes.

• Our good buddy Frank, a friend to the FIRESTORM FAN site and author of numerous blogs, shared his own personal thoughts about the Nuclear Man over on the DC Bloodlines blog.  Be warned, Frank does not have a very high opinion of Firestorm’s adventures, however, his comments are well-written and well thought out.  I find myself agreeing with some of Frank’s points, while disagreeing with others.  That’s the beauty of civilized fandom, we can have differing opinions and yet all get along.  Frank’s other sites include blogs dedicated to: Martian Manhunter, Justice League Detroit, Wonder Woman, Captain Atom and the Atom, and his own blog …nurgh…

• Back in June, Phillip Martinez wrote a review of Brightest Day #4 asking for more Firestorm content.  You can read his review of Brightest Day #4 on The Examiner by clicking here.

• Firestorm appeared once again on the Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon back on June 13.  In the episode, “The Siege of Starro! Part One” Firestorm was featured prominently along with a handful of other heroes.  Part Two has not aired yet, so I gotta believe Part One was the season finale or mid-season finale.

• The Aquaman Shrine blog has a model sheet for the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths animated DVD that was released back in February.  Firestorm is one of the characters featured on the model sheet.  Click here to see the model sheets on the Aquaman Shrine blog.

• xBrandonHexx has put together a YouTube tribute video to Killer Frost.  It’s got some good music and is worth your time if you are interested in the character.  Click here to watch the Killer Frost YouTube tribute video.

Okay, we’re three issues into Brightest Day and we’re starting to get a picture of what’s happening with Firestorm.  I’ll start with what we know, then let’s delve into speculation on where it’s going.

THE FACTS

• Jason Rusch’s girlfriend Gehenna, formerly one-half of Firestorm, was murdered by the Black Lantern Firestorm.  The Black Lantern Firestorm claimed to be the resurrected Ronnie Raymond.
• Later, Ronnie Raymond was resurrected by the light of the White Lantern with no recollection of the Black Lantern’s activities.  Ronnie quickly resumed his college partying lifestyle.
• Jason and Ronnie don’t get along.  Ronnie is coping with the fact that he died and came back, as well as that someone else has had control of the Firestorm matrix.  Meanwhile, Jason blames Ronnie for the death of Gehenna.
• When Ronnie and Jason touched in Blackest Night #0, they fused into Firestorm.  They have been unable to separate into their own individual bodies since.  They are stuck fused as Firestorm.  Ronnie currently controls the body while Jason is able to advise telepathically.
• Ray Palmer, the Atom, shrank and entered Firestorm’s body in hopes of “disarming” the Firestorm matrix.  He commented that Firestorm’s flames are no longer just for show and that it was nearly 1,000 degrees inside his body.    When the Atom arrived at the Firestorm matrix, we saw three electrons circling the nucleus.  Two electrons were bright yellow, the third was a dark gray.
• While waiting for the Atom to finish inside their body, Ronnie heard another voice telepathically that goaded him into an argument with Jason. Their body then suffered a very explosive reaction.
• At the same time Ronnie and Jason are arguing, black tendrils begin to reach out from the Firestorm matrix towards the Atom.
• The cover of Brightest Day #4 features Black Lantern Firestorm.

SPECULATION

• It seems a safe bet that the dark gray electron in the Firestorm matrix represents the Black Lantern Firestorm.  Somehow the Black Lantern Firestorm has survived inside the matrix.  That would explain the voice Ronnie heard which caused the argument with Jason.  That would explain the black tendrils chasing the Atom.
• It also seems a safe bet that the Black Lantern Firestorm will take control of the body, which would explain the cover to Brightest Day #4.
• What I’m left wondering is what exactly is the Black Lantern Firestorm.  Is it a dark reflection of Ronnie?  Is it now a dark reflection of Gehenna (which would be pretty clever)?  Is it simply a random malicious entity?
• It also seems logical that the existence of the Black Lantern Firestorm will absolve Ronnie in the blame of Gehenna’s murder.  Jason may remain uncomfortable around Ronnie, he won’t be able to blame Ronnie directly for the death of his girlfriend any longer.
• Without Nekron or the Anti-Monitor-powered black battery, where is Black Lantern Firestorm getting his power from?
• Once all this business with the Black Lantern Firestorm is finished, who will be in the matrix?  I gotta believe the Ronnie/Jason combination will be Firestorm for the foreseeable future.
• With the mention that Firestorm’s flames weren’t just for show anymore, are they going to incorporate some of the Elemental Firestorm concepts into this version?
• There was a panel in Brightest Day #1 featuring several incarnations of Firestorm.  Perhaps that was foreshadowing (along with the temperature comment) that the current Firestorm will be an amalgam of all previous versions.  That was Geoff Johns’ move with Hawkman in JSA, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he did it here with the Nuclear Man.  See my analysis below of that panel.

• The top left Firestorm was patterned after the Al Milgrom cover to Firestorm volume I #1.  This would represent the classic Firestorm.

• The bottom left Firestorm was patterned after the Matt Haley cover to Firestorm volume III #8.  This would represent the early days of Jason Rusch as Firestorm.

• The center Black Lantern Firestorm appears to be patterned after the Ethan Van Sciver variant cover to Blackest Night #3.  If you look closely at Black Lantern Firestorm’s face, you can see the similarities.

• The bottom right Firestorm was patterned after the Tom Grindberg cover to Firestorm volume II #85.  However, they used the coloring from the later Tom Mandrake issues.  This would represent the Elemental Firestorm.

• I believe the top right Firestorm was patterned after the Steve Lightle cover to Extreme Justice #8.  While the facial expression is different and the pose is reversed, the coloring on the headgear is consistent.  This is the only drawing I’ve ever seen where the classic Firestorm has yellow accents on his headgear.  If so, this drawing would represent the years Ronnie flew solo with the Firestorm matrix.

• This leaves the “Blank Slate” era as the only major incarnation not represented.  It’s possible the top right panel represents the “Blank Slate” era of Firestorm, but I can’t think of a corresponding scene.

So what do you think is going to happen with Firestorm in Brightest Day?

Just a final note, my favorite scene in all of Brightest Day so far is the panel below:

“Just take care of these boys.”  Instead, Martin may as well have said, “Just take care of my boys.”  After all Ronnie and Jason are like sons to him.  Some people may not realize that in comic book time, Jason spent a year working with Professor Stein as Firestorm.  This was during the One Year Later timeframe.  Love this panel!

• The biggest Firestorm news is that Brightest Day #0 ships today!  Be sure to stop by your local comic book store and pick up yours.  Hopefully Firestorm will play a role in the issue.

Ronnie’s back!  It’s been more than five years since Ronnie Raymond was killed by the Shadow Thief during Identity Crisis.  Now thanks to Geoff Johns and Blackest Night, Ronnie is back amongst the living!   The fans were pretty sure this was going to happen, but it was still awesome to see.  Rumor is that Ronnie’s return has been in the works since Countdown.  If so, it’s been a long wait. To make things even better, Jason is still around too!  Looks like for the immediate future Ronnie and Jason will merge to form Firestorm.

I’ll hush up for a minute and let the images speak for themselves…

Costume

Did you notice Firestorm’s new costume?  It looks like a fair amalgam of the original Ronnie Raymond/Professor Stein suit, along with Jason Rusch’s more recent Firestorm costume.  Obviously the face is Ronnie’s, but the headgear looks like Jason’s.  We’ve got Ronnie’s chest emblem, but it glows like Jason’s.  The waistline is new, but it’s reminiscent of Jason’s (especially the lack of briefs).  The gloves and boots are entirely new. Firestorm’s hair is freakin’ phenomenal!  I love all the Kirby-Dots!  I hope subsequent artists continue to draw the flames this way.  They look positively blazing!

Two things we need a better look at are the collar and the emblem on Firestorm’s left-hand side.  I can’t tell whether the collar is Ronnie’s or Jason’s at this time.  Also, it appears the left-hand side of the emblem has only two electron paths (while the right-hand side has three).  I hope that’s not the case as that drives me nuts.  I need symmetry people! 

Ronnie/Jason

As I mentioned before, it appears for the time being Firestorm will be composed of Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch.  We’ve seen Black Lantern Firestorm on the cover of Brightest Day #3 or #4 which ship in June.  I’m not sure what that means for Ronnie and Jason, but clearly they’ll be involved.

Some folks are speculating that primary control of the Firestorm body will swap back-and-forth between Ronnie and Jason (possibly dependent upon who instigates the fusion).  Some even speculate that the Firestorm body will look different, depending upon who is in control of the form.  I’m not sure how much this would add to the story (beyond confusing the general denizens of the DC Universe), so I hope this speculation is incorrect.

Based upon what we’ve seen so far, Ronnie has no memories after his death at the hands of Shadow Thief.  He apparently doesn’t recall his appearances in Firestorm volume III alongside Jason, nor does he recall the actions of Black Lantern Firestorm.  Jason remembers all of this, most importantly the death of his girlfriend Gehenna at the hands of Black Lantern Firestorm (who had a twisted version of Ronnie’s personality).  This should create some fairly dramatic scenes between Ronnie and Jason. I think adding conflict between the two beings that make up Firestorm is a good idea.  I’m looking forward to it!

I liked how Jason turned to Mera for comfort.  In a later panel (not shown above), you see Mera still hugging Jason in the background.  It would be nice if they continue that friendship between Mera and Jason.  I don’t imagine they will, but it would be a neat outcome from Blackest Night.

Going Forward

Watch for more Firestorm appearances in Brightest Day!  Sounds like there is a lot planned for that 26-issue mini-series.  Hopefully the writers are able to give Firestorm the spotlight from time to time.  I hope they also find some way to include supporting characters like: Professor Martin Stein, Lorraine Reilly (Firehawk), Mikhail Arkadin (Pozhar), Ed Raymond (Ronnie’s father), and Alvin Rusch (Jason’s father).

• During the DC Nation panel at Emerald City Comic-Con, Geoff Johns stated when asked about Firestorm, “He is going to be a main character in Brightest Day.”  Hot dog!  It was pretty obvious that Geoff was planning something for Firestorm, now we have an idea where it will play out!  Check out the cover for Brightest Day #3 or #4 below by David Finch!  Interesting to note that you can’t see Firestorm’s Black Lantern ring on this cover.  Admittedly, it switched hands a few times during the series so it’s possible it’s on his right hand.  However, it’s possible the Black Lantern rings are gone after Blackest Night #8.  We’ll have to wait and see.

• Comics Alliance recently published an article on comic book characters they’d like to party with.  Firestorm didn’t make the list, but Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog thinks he should have.  If you take into account Firestorm’s Extreme Justice years, then he’d definitely be someone to go pub-crawling with.  My thanks to Steven Marsh for sending this my way.

• I guess the biggest news about Firestorm this week is my own.  Gerry Conway, co-creator of Firestorm and writer of the character for nine years, was kind enough to grant an interview for FIRESTORM FAN! He was super nice and extraordinarily generous with his time. Even though Mr. Conway has had an amazing and prolific career, we focused almost exclusively on Firestorm for the interview.  Once I get the audio edited and cleaned-up (read as: edit out tons of my fanboy awestruck ramblings), it should come out to about an hour.  The interview will be posted as an audio file, as it would literally take me months to transcribe the interview.  Watch for this interview in the first part of January to commemorate the one year anniversary of the FIRESTORM FAN blog.
• I want to send a huge THANKS to Tommy from the Bat-Blog, a fantastic blog dedicated to all-things Batman! He was kind enough to give FIRESTORM FAN a shout-out last week. That was super-cool of him! Thanks Tommy!
• While Firestorm doesn’t appear in Justice League of America #39, he is mentioned several times.  Additionally, there is a very creepy scene of Black Lantern Doctor Light licking Gehenna’s transformed head from Blackest Night.  Yuck!

• Over at the Favorite Fiction blog, Marcus McElhaney postulates what would happen if Marvel Comic’s The Sentry fought Firestorm.  He even uses video from the customized Capcom fighting game to make his point.  While I’m not thrilled with the outcome of the fight, it’s still really cool to see it. Watch for Ronnie transforming into Firestorm and listen for sounds from the Super Friends cartoon. • Over at The Fwoosh, The Knights Round Table created several Green Lantern custom Mego action figures for Custom Con 24.  The Knights Round Table is a customizing community for the 8inch and 9inch cloth scale action figure format.  Here is their Mego scale Black Lantern Firestorm.

• I stumbled across the comic strip below by Fred Hembeck on The Hembeck Files!  It appears it was originally drawn back in 1978, prior to Firestorm vol I getting canceled.

• Finally, a cute Firestorm drawing by Matt Kaufenberg.  Given the hair on Firestorm, I gotta wonder if this was based upon early pictures of the Firestorm Blammoid.  My thanks to BDog for sending this my way.

Firestorm Ignites The Brave and the Bold

Batman: The Brave and the Bold may be aimed at kids, but the Cartoon Network series has given fanboys (and girls) plenty to geek out about. With appearances by heroes both iconic (Green Arrow) and obscure (B’wana Beast, anyone?!), the show has tapped into DC Comics’ rich archives for a colorful cast of friends and foes for the Caped Crusader.

The series returns with new episodes on January 1, bringing Batman a new batch of super friends. Among this winter’s guests stars is Firestorm, a longtime second-tier character with a strong cult following who uses nuclear energy to change the atomic structure of inorganic objects. These powers were gained when two men were caught in the middle of a nuclear accident, which merged them into one flame-haired crimefighter.

Everybody Hates Chris star Tyler James Williams provides the voice for Jason Rusch, who hosts the dual personality in his body, while SpongeBob SquarePants’ Bill Fagerbakke plays ex-jock Ronnie Raymond, whose consciousness is along for the ride. (In the comics, Ronnie was the original Firestorm, paired with brainy physicist Martin Stein.) “When they combine it’s basically the smart kid has the body and he’s got this dumb guy in his head telling him stuff,” says producer James Tucker. “It’s like the flip side of mentoring. Usually you have the rebellious kid and the older stable guy trying to tell him what to do. This time the kid is stable and the older guy is telling him to lighten up.”

The episode’s main villain is Doctor Double X, a little known character who first appeared in the 1950s, and Tucker advises to “look for lots of cameos of obscure Batman villains. This is definitely a fanboy’s freeze-frame episode. “

• Blackest Night #4 came out back on October 28.  If you haven’t picked it up yet, be sure to get a copy.  It’s a good issue and has one really good Firestorm moment.
• Still no word on an air date for the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode featuring Firestorm.  However, I did stumble across some sketches that are supposedly of Firestorm from the Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon (see below).  I found this image on Toonzone ’s DC Animation forum.

Just as a reminder, below is the corresponding action figure shown at the San Diego Comic Con this year.  The costume designs don’t match up exactly, so I gotta wonder if the picture above is legitimate and/or if the design was changed some during production.

• Firestorm will get his own spotlight issue of DC Comics Super Hero Collection magazine in April 2010! This is the magazine that highlights a different comic character each issue and includes a small metal figure of the character.  Your local comic shop should be able to order you a copy if you are interested.

• Jon over at the Fizzit blog got some amazing sketches done recently.  Check out his site to see Firestorm sketches by Matthew Clark (Doom Patrol) and Bill Sienkiewicz (just about everything cool).
• I stumbled across an unusual Firestorm custom action figure created by “Doombot”.  The custom below was found on Raving Toy Maniac.  It was done in the style of the late 1990’s DC Super Heroes Silver Age Collection (which were done in the style of the classic Mego action figures).

• Finally, I happened upon soyboy7’s photostream on Flickr.  They’ve taken some really interesting action figure pictures, including this one below of Jason.  Neat stuff, check out their pics!
