Really guys. You’re hanging on with the Mariachi dubstep mashup? Really?
Beyond that though, great episode. I really liked both Justice League of America #1 and Vibe #1.
(For JLA, I got the South Carolina flag cover. Of course the SC flag is the absolute best of all of the state flags, so there. I think New Jersey’s state flag has an image of a toolbooth on it.)
Vibe being able to detect when people move from dimension to dimension is a simple breakthrough of concept which makes perfect sense, and is one of those head-slapper moments where you say “why didn’ I think of that?”
As far as what is going on with Hawkman, the mystery of why he is acting so cold is somthing we have been discussing over on Being Carter Hall. It’s very different from how he has behaved in his own book, so I am wondering what Johns is up to. Hawkman versus Aquaman would be one heck of a throwdown here in the New 52. I’m with rob on that one, I’m not big on heroes fighting but those two would a showdown for the ages.
And of course you didn’t give Katana a chance, it’s part of you guys’s larger anti-Outsiders, pro-Justice League Detroit agenda which you two have been pushing for months. Nevermind the pile of empirical evidence clearly demonstrating the fact that Outsiders was the superior title in all repsects. So typical, you can’t see the forest for the trees. And OF COURSE no mention of the fact that Katana also got her own ongoing solo book. OF COURSE!
I was pleasantly surprised with Vibe. I never thought I would buy a Vibe book but the ‘detector of incursions’ hook sounded interesting and Supergirl scribe Sterling Gates takes over with issue #3.
I also loved seeing Pariah in the holding cells. The ‘forman’ is actually a Scissorman from the Orqwith world from Grant Morrisson’s first arc on Doom Patrol.
Great podcast.

it’s part of you guys’s larger anti-Outsiders, pro-Justice League Detroit agenda which you two have been pushing for months.
This is news to me. I loved BATO and the later Outsiders book growing up; they were some of my favorite comics. So I can’t imagine what I said that indicates I don’t like those books/characters. If I did it was unintentional!
@Keith G. Jaconetti – Look here pal, you’ve been on our case about this Pro/Anti-Outsiders kick for months. You and I both know you are dancing around the elephant in the room. You are still ticked off that we snubbed Steel in our previous episode covering “Dale Gunn and the Heywood Clan”. I realize you use the corpse of Steel as part of your blog logo, however, that doesn’t make him a good character.
And Katana vs Vibe? Really? No contest! We all know that Katana will fold within 12 issues, whereas Vibe has already been pre-approved for over 100+ issues by Dan DiDio himself!
Keep shakin’!
Shag
@Shag, WELL EXCUSE ME but you left out ONE THIRD of the “Heywood Clan” in your episode about the Heywood Clan! That’s just plain lazy! I’m sorry but the excuse of “My cat used my copy of Justice League of America #260 to exercise her claws” is utter BULLFLOP, because 1) everyone (EVERYONE) knows that cats naturally prefer Baxter Paper when exercising their claws and b) your cat is declawed to begin with!
I’d also like to point out that you (yes, specifically YOU) singled out Black Lightning in the Breakdancing episode, calling him (and I quote), a superhero “with absolutely no rythym who is clearly an embarassment to his community” and then implied that the fact that he couldn’t dance is why he wore a mask in the first place!
Besides betraying your complete lack of understanding of the history of breakdancing (Jefferson was created in 1977 for crying out loud; The seminal breakdance movie Breakin’ wasn’t released until 1984!), it’s just further evidence of your frothing, blind hatred of the Outsiders. Admitting you have a problem is the first step, Shag!
Of all the Fire & Water Podcast’s Vibe-centric April Fool’s Day episodes, I think this was the most disappointing. Sorry guys, but this felt like so much filler, or like a clip show of your previous Vibe episodes. I hope you bring your A-game again next week when you review every single one of the WTF gatefold cover issues.
i really enjoyed epiosde #31 where you guys reviewed each issue of the “All Star Vibe” 12 issuer series written by Alan Moore and drawn by Brian Bolland.
can’t wait for D.C. to put them all in 1 big hardcover this christmas!!!
LOL!!!!!! You guys rock! Love the comments!!!!
Just in case any of you folks didn’t figure it out, yes, this was a complete April Fools Day prank. I enjoy the character of Vibe, but no one could be that excited. Hope everyone enjoyed and stayed for the Listener Feedback!
And thanks to Daniel Cynical Adams and Ryan Willard for the awesome musical themes!!!
Shag
So you’re NOT going to keep doing F&W Vibe episodes? And have I just been Amalgamated with Frank? IS there an Amalgam episode of F&W by the way?
Now, I’m going to take your reviews as given despite the date they aired on and say that I’m far less forgiving of JLofA than you are. I truly dislike Finch’s art, and the first issue was just a terrible string of conversations as Johns brings the same narrative strategy to this book he used in Justice League, i.e. tell but don’t show. Plus, I dislike the trend of making super-teams subservient to the government. The only redeeming feature, I found, was Vibe. And that speaks volumes.
So yes, Vibe is the better book. I like it when Johns gets aspirational (I loved his Superboy stories in Adventure Comics, for example) and on that basis, there’s some chance of Vibe becoming the new Fury of Firestorm in tone and purpose. It connects to JLofA rather tightly, but still retains an innocent spirit. Not sure how solid its premise is (Vibe’s powers are pretty nebulous, for example), but I’m sticking with it for now. I dropped Katana after 2 issues though, it’s just not doing it for me, and I tried, I really tried.
I didn’t care for Vibe #1. Nothing about it bothered me or disappointed me–lack of expectations helped there–but nothing about it really surprised me or showed me something that I would want to spend money on every month. I am curious to see how Sterling Gates approaches the character when he takes over; I’ll pay close attention to the reviews in the coming months and if Gates’ first issue gets solid praise I’ll check it out.
I got to say I love the theme song.
Thanks for calling us “:Vibe-Heads” and not anything naughty.
So Vibe is Access now?
(I know I’m alone, but I wish they would bring Access back. I have dreams of DC and Marvel doing something completely unheard of and switching characters for a few months. Meaning Superman would go over to the MU for a few months and star in Spider-Man’s book, and be published by Marvel, while Spider-Man would go over to the DCU and star in Superman’s book, which would be published by DC. And Access would be there in both their titles, trying to figure out how to get them back where they belong. Never happen, but it would be fun).
Episode was great. i figured out it was an April Fool’s prank as soon as I heard the opening theme, but still a great episode anyway.
This was a fantastic episode! Well done guys! Vibe 4 Life!
I had a real “What The…” moment when I first put the episode on to listen. But thanks to all the other April Fools stuff onthe internets, I quickley clicked on to what was happening… who says New Zealanders are stoopid?
I liked Vibe #1&2 also. JLA (Justice League Amanda) was kool, but not sure why Hawkman is acting like Wolverine now? But I guess they needed to do something with him, to get the Liefeld smell off of him. And surprise, surprise, Geoff Johns put Star Girl on the team… Never would have guessed that happening…
I loved the Andy Diggle, Action Comics remark Robb made, made me laugh! Also got the Madea joke… Though I would say that pre new 52, Amanda Waller was more a Yvette Nicole Brown (from Community) and the new 52 version is now Halle Berry!
Very funny episode guys. Looking forward to next years episode already!
No numbered/lettered/bulletted list from Frank?
Has someone checked to see if he’s still alive?
