I dont like it. Plain and simple. Firestorm is a struggling book. You dont bring in one of the worst new 52 redesigns to help prop it up. Atoms book got cancelled because it was such a mess and now Jurgens wants him on the cover of Firestorm? No wonder so many writers and artists are jumping ship. DC has no clue apparently. Another chance of putting a classic rogue on the cover to attract longtime fans missed!

Cool cover! Firestorm vs. Typhoon! Classic match-up! … No, wait, that’s Captain Atom?? Oh man, that doesn’t look good. Firestorm looks good, but if that’s Captain Atom, I bet his series isn’t going well… wait, it’s been cancelled?… errr… Well, maybe next time… (I agree with Charlemagne… this doesn’t look good, sigh…).

I am really looking forward to Jurgens’ take on Firestorm, especially with the “back to square one” approach that it seems to be taking. That being said, a fight with Captain Atom is pretty yawn-worthy in my opinion. Firestorm has a decent rogue gallery, let’s see one of the classics already! By the time this comes out it will have been 16 months of a Firestorm book and no Killer Frost, Typhoon, Multiplex, Hyena…hell at this point I’d even take Plastique or, all joking aside, Slipknot. Something to connect us back to the “good ol days” when Firestorm was fun.

Unless Captain Atom and Firestorm are fighting over who took the last slice of pizza, I’m not sure I’m all that interested.

Full disclosure though, it could be 22 pages of a drawing of the inside of a NYC phone book and I’d buy it, as long as it had Firestorm on the cover.

I certainly wouldn’t mind a good Tokamak or Killer Frost story — but I’m not put off at this on first blush. It may flow naturally out of however Jurgens re-establishes the Ronnie/Jason fusion, especially if this incarnation’s tie to the quantum field (instead of just being nuclear based) is kept. It might even bring back the whole end-of-Brightest Day quantum field instability (Professor Stein did seem adamant that Ron somehow had a unique tie to the field and Pozhar seemed to agree near the end…). If the re-fusion of Ronnie and Jason somehow brings back that type of instability, it make sense to me that Captain Manh-atom would sense it and be drawn to check it out. The whole “fight” could be over trying to force them to “de-fuse” the situation.

Yeah, could really be weak — but Jurgens pulled off some interesting stuff with Booster Gold, so I’m willing to think he could write this well. After he re-establishes the character and deals with the fallout of that hopefully he can get back to a few of the classic rogues.

Slipknot, however, can fill in for Mindboggler’s classic role [demise] over in Suicide Squad. (I *liked* MB as a character, darn it Ostrander!)

As a side rant since Captain Atom is topical — can someone please tell artists to do a basic fact check and *not* have Air Force Captains (I checked the bio/summary at the end of #0, it clearly says Air Force still) flying F-14 Tomcats over an *aircraft carrier* no less! Usually they just screw up and have the Tomcat mysteriously in the Air Force arsenal… but Captain Adams was pretty clearly part of a carrier battle group squadron here… which was then fighting home grown Zentraedi Battle Pods… one really wonders what the artist was thinking, or if I missed one heck of an in-joke!

Hey gang! Thanks for all the comments. I hear what you are saying about Captain Atom. Since his book got cancelled, he might not be the ideal character to help boost sales on the book. However, I trust Dan Jurgens’ writing and I’m sure it will be a fantastic story.

Looking forward to future issues of this book!
