Joe Harris, former writer of DC’s New 52 title The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men, just last week shared his unrealized plans for the series if he had continued as writer for another year! Joe stepped in to help Ethan Van Sciver with the “Firestorm Protocols” story when Gail Simone left the book. Ethan eventually left the series as well, which left Joe the sole writer on the book. Last week Joe posted what he calls, “The Lost Firestorm ‘Year Two’ Story Notes Mindmap.” This “mindmap” is a flowchart-looking image which he often makes using his iPad when plotting out stories and outlining.

In his blog post, Joe explained:

… [the mindmap] is based off of the original plans through issue #12… in which Ronnie and Jason, the two disagreeable Firestorms, would have taken on Pozhar, who’d sought to control Ronnie and gain access to the Quantum Field via the young man’s special connection which he coveted. Following this showdown, Ronnie and Jason, along with those Firestorms who survived, were to head into the mountains of northern Pakistan in search of a new villain named “Ashra Khan,” whom we were going to reveal was behind the “Rogue” Firestorms, a kind of Colonel Kurtz leading broken warriors fighting a war outside the war. And the conclusion of that story arc would have propelled us toward what’s being worked toward in this document.

For all the details and a better look at this mindmap, be sure to head over to Joe’s blog by clicking here.

Wow! There are some really interesting concepts put forth in there! It would have been fascinating to have seen this journey unfold. During a discussion on Facebook, Joe also shared this:

I always wanted to take the series toward a real epic, ‘cosmic level’ event. When you start dealing with the nuclear forces of stars, you start considering the notions of black holes, supernovae and, potentially, wormholes… which is where this all comes from. It would have been fun, but alas…

We may not have seen Joe’s vision unfold in the pages of Firestorm, but you can still support his work! Check out his current project, Great Pacific from Image Comics!

Well, I guess it’s time to say goodbye…

The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men #0 was released yesterday; the final issue for the creative team of writer Joe Harris, penciller Yildiray Cinar, and inker Marlo Alquiza. I’m very sad to see these guys go. New writer/penciller Dan Jurgens debuts on Firestorm next month and will undoubtedly produce excellent comics, but I’ll still miss Joe, Yildiray, and Marlo. I really enjoyed their issues of The Fury of Firestorm! Yildiray has been with the book since the first issue, penciling 11 of the 13 issues; Joe has written seven of the issues, initially co-plotting with Ethan Van Sciver; and Marlo has been brilliantly inking the book for five issues. Each of these creators have brought their own unique style and voice, enriching the Firestorm cast of characters and mythology.

Not only are these guys amazingly talented, but they are also incredibly nice and have been very supportive of FIRESTORM FAN. Please continue to follow these fantastic creators on their next projects! You can support Joe Harris by purchasing his new creator-owned series debuting in November, Great Pacific coming from Image Comics. Keep an eye on Joe Harris’ website for future updates. Support Yildiray Cinar by pre-ordering Earth-2 #7 & #8 as it was just announced that Yildiray will be drawing those two issues. Watch Yildiray Cinar on Twitter for the most up-to-date information. Marlo Alquiza is currently recuperating from an injury, but helped out on a few pages of the upcoming Team 7 #1. Check Marlo Alquiza’s Facebook page to keep up with his activities. As more information becomes available about upcoming projects from these creators, we’ll be sure to share the news. By supporting their upcoming projects, you are supporting the creators. Then it’s not really “goodbye”, it’s “see you soon!”

I’m focusing on these three creators today because they’ve just finished their tenure on the book. However, I should take a moment to recognize some of the other talented folks that have contributed to this great run of Firestorm: Ethan Van Sciver, Gail Simone, Norm Rapmund, Travis Lanham, Steve Buccellato, Hi-Fi Color, Daniel HDR, Walden Wong, Rachel Gluckstern, and Rickey Purdin.

THANK YOU from us Match-heads to all the creators involved in making the last 13 issues of The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men! Good luck in all your future endeavors!

Many folks are excited for the adventures of the newly-merged Ronnie & Jason Firestorm! If you can’t wait until tomorrow, check out the five page preview over on IGN right now! Click here to check it out!

This issue is written by Joe Harris, penciled by Yildiray Cinar, inked by Marlo Alquiza, colored by Hi-Fi, and lettered by Travis Lanham! Sadly this will be the final issue of this creative team. However, they’ve given us a fantastic run of Firestorm comics and it looks like they are going out with a bang!

This issue is entitled, “Covalence”. If you’re unfamiliar with the word, below are some definitions to help explain. Since this issue is about Ronnie and Jason merging to become a singular Firestorm, the definitions below begin to make sense.

Covalence: the formation and nature of covalent bonds

Covalent bonds: a type of chemical bond involving the sharing of electrons between atoms in a molecule, especially the sharing of a pair of electrons by two adjacent atoms

Below are a few of the pages from the preview. Be sure to visit IGN to see all five preview pages!
