What I particularly liked about Dick Giordano’s depiction of Kara in this story was that he incorporated the Superman spit curl into her hair style, which didn’t click for me until the final page reveal…

I remember getting to the end of this story and thinking, “Wow, the long coat really concealed Power Girl’s giant breasts!” 😉

Wonderful story and a wonderful episode, although I must say, after Shagg’s numerous complaints that the Secret Origins Podcast poached Fire & Water’s audience, it seems like the payback is Rob stealing my guests.

Great episode, lovely to have Anj on there. I do disagree with Rob, though, that Supergirl didn’t have a distinctive face that could be recognised in Dick Giordano’s drawing. I remember seeing her and thinking: ‘KARA… it can’t be … BUT IT IS!’ (Yes, I got all my dialogue from comic books.) The red earrings were the clincher – even though I can’t find an image of her ever wearing them, I see them in my head.

I love this story. I picked this one off of the shelves too, and man, was I gobsmacked by that ending. The notion that the souls of the Pre-Crisis versions of the characters still existed…somewhere…that was amazing.

When you guys were talking about where did Kara go when she rounded that corner, I thought of The Kingdom: Planet Krypton one-shot, written by Mark Waid. Clearly Waid still had the ghosts of past continuities on his mind, almost a decade later. The Kingdom is a flawed event, but that one-shot is fantastic, with Batman encountering spirits of characters that should not exist. The instance where he recognizes the Earth-One Batwoman is just as heart-wrenching as Kara’s reveal here. Well, almost.

Of course, at the end of that event, Waid revealed the existence of Hypertime, but later DC Powers-That-Were eventually said that concept was verboten. Sigh.

Great to hear Anj on the show, and I really enjoyed hearing why he picked Supergirl as a particular favorite. It’s something DC probably didn’t consider when they axed her: Supergirl is the accessible member of the Superman Family. Especially in the Silver Age, where Superman was more alien in nature, and more stoic and unflappable. Very nice discussion.

Great to hear a bit of the Brennert interview at the end. Also fantastic that it is in print in Back Issue. I’m not trying to get a raise on my Power Records salary when I say it’s one of the best interviews ever run in BI, which has no shortage of great interviews!
