Firestorm on The Flash Post-Game Report — No Spoilers

Firestorm! FIRESTORM! F-I-R-E-S-T-O-R-M!! Just in case someone hasn’t watched last night’s episode of The Flash yet, I’m posting this without spoilers. Since I’m not discussing, we’ll just say the parts you’d expect me to freak out, I did freak out.

Robbie Amell as Firestorn on The Flash mid-season finale

This was such a great episode! The developing plot with the Reverse Flash is gripping. It’s still hard to believe, but Ronnie Raymond (played by Robbie Amell) appeared tonight on The Flash and declared himself, “Firestorm”! (I don’t consider that a spoiler since it was featured in the preview.)  A really powerful mid-season finale!

I thought Robbie Amell did a fantastic job! I really felt bad for Ronnie and the confusion he’s experiencing. Well done, Mr. Amell! Be sure to follow Robbie Amell on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook!

I mentioned this last week, but watching Ronnie Raymond on The Flash has been a somewhat surreal experience for me. I’ve been following Firestorm’s adventures for 30 years, regularly blogging about him for nearly 6 years, and podcasting about him for 3 years. I’ve read the character on the page, watched him in animated form, and held molded plastic versions of the character. However, none of that prepares you for seeing the character in live action. Just, wow.

This version seems significantly different from the comic book version, but I’m okay with the differences. In the comics, Firestorm has had numerous incarnations; the only constant being a state of change. I’m excited to see where this story is leading our favorite Nuclear Man!

Like you, I’ve been following Firestorm since I was a kid – back when he had the short stories in the back of The Flash comics (so I find he inclusion on the current show sort of amusing and well-fit). I don’t really read comics these days, but I still have a soft spot for the character, and let’s just say last night’s episode got me really excited. You’re right, this isn’t exactly the same incarnation …yet. Who knows how the character will evolve on the show!

The first two comic books I ever read were The Flash #347 and Fury of Firestorm #38 so seeing the two characters together on screen is awesome. The best part of the episode though had to be seeing Ronnie flying. That was so cool.

I especially like how this episode took the meaning of “Firestorm back-up on THE FLASH” to a whole new level…

  4. The CW shows make alterations to the characters–some substantive and some superficial–and those changes can be deal-breakers for a lot of fans of the characters. Initially, I hated the version of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow that debuted in ARROW because I didn’t think the changes were necessary or additive. But over time I accepted that CW’s Green Arrow is not DC Comics’ Green Arrow. Beyond that, the changes the shows made for the characters make sense within the context of the television world.

Firestorm is going to be different than what Conway and Milgrom envisioned. That might include different powers–more flame-based and less transmutation, perhaps? That might include a different look; we’ll see if Cisco builds a suit for him that refines the flames around his face. That might include the plurality of his identity, too, although we know CW has cast both Professor Martin Stein and Jason Rusch. I can’t imagine why they’d introduce those characters if they weren’t going to be part of Firestorm’s story going forward. In all likelihood, some of these changes will annoy fans who didn’t feel there was anything wrong or lacking with the character. But if fans can take a breath and roll with the changes, I think they’ll discover that THIS Firestorm works in the context of the CW Universe and is a lot of fun.

I went through this process to various degrees with Green Arrow, Arsenal, and Black Canary. I’m now looking forward to seeing how these shows differentiate Firestorm, the Atom, Wildcat, and Katana.

I loved seeing Firestorm. Right after he showed up, it went to commercial. Instead of fast forwarding through the commercial, I had to immediately rewind it and watch that scene again.

    It was AWESOMESAUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can’t wait for him to show up again… and hopefully his own spin off show….

    *giggle giggle*

How cool is it that Firestorm is part of Flash’s first Christmas episode?

Robbie. Amell posted a pic on instagram of his Firestorm costume. It’s far away, but you can see some familiar circles. instagramhttp://instagram.com/p/we6W39nsv5/

  8. I just got to watch this week’s episode. Man, that was worthy of a SEASON finale, not just mid-season! This show is firing (no pun intended) on all cylinders. Robbie saving the day was the icing on the cake. The whole family loved it!

Loved it. That’s all. Just loved it.
