A few quick thoughts on an initial read:

And…. once again, Ron’s a jerk. *sigh* Is it really too much to ask that Firestorm not be composed of annoying stereotypes these days? Yeah, yeah … personal growth and all (though one would think 5 years would be better to grow in a position of severe responsibility instead of backsliding — New 52 Ron at least used to care about people more than just getting with the ladies).

Have to wonder just what Jason’s been up to — they seem to leave that out here. If he’s still adamant that Ron (and Firestorm by proxy) shouldn’t have dropped out of the superhero scene… was there any attempt to get his solo powers working (if he can transmute in a lab before fusing with Ron, one would think there’s still a spark possible for solo action)? Could he find another Matrix partner like pre-New52? Just what has Stein been up to, as well? (Read On For More).

And on that note… did this seem rather short to anyone else? It wasn’t quite as bad as a $0.99 digital-only, but it felt a lot like “That’s it?” at the end to me. And not exactly in a “leave them wanting more” way.

Off topic for a minute — but thinking of times when Ron had a little more respect, I sat down and re-read the Jolley issues of Jason’s start the other day. Frankly, I didn’t remember how good that writing was — probably a little biased by the shock of change from Ron to Jason. Yet another bit of Firestorm that really could use collecting (or something worth finding in the backstop bins, folks).

Firestorm has been a member of the Justice League, and was among the tentpoles of BRIGHTEST DAY and the FOREVER EVIL storylines, and has had his own title pre- and post- both CRISIS and FLASHPOINT. My friends who have never read a comic book recognize Firestorm from appearances on SUPER FRIENDS And BRAVE AND THE BOLD. (He’s even featured in a regular podcast about Aquaman, and everybody knows Aquaman!) What I’m saying here is Firestorm has reached as deep as he’s going to get into the pop consciousness until such time as he appears in live action, flaming head and all (puffy sleeves optional).

Yet you still describe FUTURES END as a potential “big break” for the character. Do you have a Firestorm persecution complex, Shag?
