@Kieth, I think Lobo was in Deathstroke. The only issue of Deathstroke I have is the one which crossed over with Hawkman, so I cannot confirm that.

Well, I’m not one of those people who was rallying against Hawkman. I just can’t stand Liefeld’s art, and seeing it on the cover was enough to make me put the book back. (PS Which book was it that he drew that horrible looking Lobo? I was thinking it was Hawkman before hand, so that might be another reason I put it back on the shelf.)

I’ve been wanting to read Hawkman for a while now, so on your word, Luke, I just added it to the pull list.

I get where you are coming from, Dave, but a full 50% of your list of ice guys are Alpha-type personalities. Mr. Freeze? Captain Cold? Not really pack mentality guys. Blizzard I will grant you, but only the second one. The original one was a loner who struck out on his own to get revenge on Tony Stark. He was nobody’s lackey. (Loser is subjective especially for Iron Man villains.)

And of course who can forget the greatest named ice villain ever — the Wonder Woman foe MINISTER BLIZZARD! 😀

The problem with Killer Frost here is that she looks utterly generic. There are a lot of ‘ice’ villains out there in comics – Blizzard, Mr Freeze, Icicle, Captain Cold, and they all peddle the same motif. But more than that they are nearly all just losers and lackeys, that’s what happened to Killer Frost in the 90s.
I don’t think it’s just false nostalgia to say the original Killer Frost has never been bettered, a distinctive visual look was matched by an Alpha personality – here was somebody who led, never followed.

I agree with Boosterrific, im not that sure I like the black on Killer Frost’s costume. But its hard to make a judgement call based on just this cover.
Looking forward to reading this issue in the future!

With Jurgens writing and pencilling, I can see this title making it into the top 20 and eventually top 10!

I really like Killer Frost, but I’m not nuts about that look of this new Killer Frost either. There’s just way too much black in the DCnU these days. It’s not a shade that I associate with ice. While I always thought Killer Frost should have no pupils, I don’t think black fills are the solution.

(I have to concede that this distaste of black is probably based on years of reading 4-color comics with an inability to effectively render shades of gray. Superman’s hair, Batman’s cape, Spider-Man’s costume, Moon Knight’s costume… all black but not.)

I should correct myself — “DC Comics marks” moreso tha just straight comic book marks. A lot of Marvel readers love their B- and C-list titles; it’s Marvel who doesn’t like those books and cancels them as soon as they can.

Liefeld NEVER did interior art on Hawkman. He did covers only (as far as art). The interior art has been by Joe Bennett and Art Thibert since issue #9 after Philip Tan left. And it has been pretty damn amazing over that period.

I have said this so many times that I feel like a broken record. Or, if you prefer, a scratched CD.

To answer your question Sean, yes, Rob Liefeld has not been the writer of Savage Hawkman for a couple of issues now. Frank Tieri is finishing up the “Hawkman: Wanted” storyline and then Tom DeFalco comes in for the next story. The art team is staying the same.

It’s really amazing to me the number of people onlin who are railing against The Savage Hawkman and have never even cracked it’s spine. Or actively campaign to have it fail. It really is. DC puts out a pile of craptacular books every month which I don’t read, do I complain about them? No. If other people like them then more power to them.

Comic book marks complain endlessly about how they want diversity and want new characters to take the spotlight, then they crap all over any book which has a B- or C-lister as the star and then shovel another Batman title down their gullets. It’s beyond ridiculous.

(Whoops I guess I talked about Hawkman some more after all, sorry Shag.)

I was gonna start reading Hawkman. Unfortunately, the month I went to pick it up, I saw Liefeld art. Dropped the book back on the shelf.

I like the design. Certainly fits in with the motif of the New 52 witout being too extreme, either. The original Killer Frost was a great character and foil for Ronnie. And the concept of a “cold” character whose powers are endothermic rather than strictly cold-generation has always been novel.

Always thought it would have been cool to see Johnny Storm and Killer Frost tangle in a Marvel vs DC crossover, heh heh.

@Charlemagne, I think you may be onto something about the Secret Society, as that thread is running through a lot of the books this month. I myself am wondering which member of the Society is strong enough to take out Hawkman… the giant hand we can glimpse on the cover makes me think of Blockbuster for some reason.
