x hero can beat up Superman because of x explanation is really the ultimate in over compensating.

Besides, heroes fighting each other is just dumb. Why would Firestorm want or need to do that to Superman in the first place? Why does anyone need to validate their favorite hero by being certain he/she can beat up another hero?

I got a better idea. How about Superman and Firestorm team up in a story that showcases what’s awesome about both of them?

Abso-freakin-lutely. No contest. In fact, Batman wouldn’t even need that Kryptonite ring he keeps around in case Superman gets out of hand. He would only need to call Firestorm to take care of business.

I must say though, the stuff seems to be so rare that in the new 52 at least, where Ronnie and Jason seem to be required to understand the molecular composition to transform something, their knowledge around the requirements to create kryptonite might be limited.
