But here Ronnie is just average academically. Surely with Ronnie as a star quarterback has other qualities which could be useful in a tactical sense if he’s in the back seat. While he couldn’t over scientific advice he sure could suggest tactics since he must have some of that to be a star quarterback.So let ’em switch and Jurgens can explore how the dynamic changes according to who drives as tehy are two very different personalities.

@Martin Stein RIP – The problem I see with letting Jason “drive” the Firestorm is that he’s the brains of the pair, and if he’s the brains AND the body, then Ronnie doesn’t contribute anything but color commentary. They did that in the BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD cartoon, with the brainy Jason in charge of Firestorm, and Ronnie as this dumb gym teacher who just rambles in his head. It was funny for a minute, but then it got kind of pointless.

I liked it. I sort of hope Jason will get to “drive” at some point, but for the time being I get why they’re doing it this way. I do like the change in tone as well. Definitely much closer to the spirit of the original Gerry Conway concept. I’m not sure I’m up for the inevitable love triangle with Tonya. Does Alvin have two arms now?

The issue noted that the idea of two guys merging into one being had an “ick” factor to it. It has been my longstanding theory that Firestorm never became popular in the 1980s because fanboys saw the Ronnie and Martin relationship as a gay subtext.

All in all, a good solid start, I thought.

I still wish that we could see where the previous storyline was going as I was super interested in it. However, I am totally happy with Jurgens’ first issue and know he’ll do it right.

Issue 13 is out…and there was much rejoicing!

I second the previous comments here, this issue was a LOT of fun. No offense to the previous plethora of creators on the first 12 issues, but this is the first issue where I really thought “That’s my Firestorm!” The big smile on Firestorm’s face in the first panel he’s in just lets you know that you’re in for a fun ride. Which is exactly what this title needed. Dark and gloomy just doesn’t work for this character, and while I respect EVS for trying something new, it’s clear that Firestorm just needs to be more of the fun, carefree, happy-go-lucky sort of hero.

I have seen a lot of good tweets, posts and reviews of this book spring up today so I am really, really hoping there’s an uptick of sales as word of mouth spreads about the new direction. It isn’t a perfect book, but it’s definitely heading in the right direction, which is something I’m not sure I could have said about Firestorm the last 6 months or so.

I would like to congratulate Shag, as I assume the “I dunno, but she’s hot” panel was dedicated to him.

Just finished it, and I must say it makes me happy. Really solid characterisations for everyone, no animosity for the sake of it between Ronnie and Jason, and several interesting plot lines to boot (anyone else reminded of the 2000 Committee by the mysterious bad guys?). It’s great that Dan took immediate steps to give Firestorm his own world and supporting cast, and to make the characters more than just stereotypes. I felt the previous run was too event driven with no reason to actually care about the characters, but that’s not the case here.

Finally, I freaking LOVE that the first shot of Firestorm has him smiling. Firestorm should be fun, dammit.

I enjoyed this issue. I bought 2 copies just like I said I would. I want this book to fly off the shelves and make it hard to acquire. And my favorite part of the book? COACH CONWAY! Nice nod by Jurgens, but I saw no Asst. Coach Milgrom…maybe next issue.

i loved this issue its my favorite of the new 52 so far. its the firestorm book i wanted though im sure joe and yildiray could of done just as good a job after last months showing. im glad jurgens first and their last feel like the same series. his work feels like a continuation as much as a new beginning i look forward to what will come. fan the flame.

I bought six comics on ComiXology today and FIRESTORM #13 was the first I read. I don’t think that’s ever happened before, but I was really excited to see how Jurgens would handle Ronnie and Jason. I’ve said before–often–that I love a lot of the ideas and themes that Simone/Van Sciver/Cinar/Harris introduced during the first year of this book, but the execution failed in a lot of ways.

This issue, I think, goes a long way toward righting the ship. As he said in the recent interview featured on the Fire & Water Podcast, there’s a new sense of “fun” in this title, something it really needs. We get a lot of new villains in this first issue, and while the big mech-warrior featured on the cover didn’t really intrigue me, the three who raid S.T.A.R. Labs at the end are a lot more intriguing, as is the mysterious organization and its even more mysterious leader.

I’m really curious to hear what Shag and others think about this issue, but I’ll say the highlight for me is the interpersonal relationships. Ronnie and Jason don’t act like lifelong sworn enemies and yell at each other over nothing like they did back in issue #1. Despite their different interests, they have a shared history and a shared mission, and they can speak genially. At the same time, Jurgens has introduced a simple but reasonable conflict for them: a possible love triangle with Tonya.
