Leaving Stein “dead” still allows for one more “classic” character shake-up. Could be in six months could be six years. If sales still lag behind the rest of the pack DC editorial could play the Stein card in one final attempt to save the book by bringing back the original Ronnie and Professor dynamic.

So far as I can tell, DC is adamant about Stein being dead because “he’s old.” This explanation of theirs tells me that they have never understood who Stein was, and what he was all about, and why those were important elements to the character of Firestorm.

Still, this looks like a step back in the right direction.

i agree too….i wish we knew why DC was so adamant about the professor being dead…..his death had its place in the Brightest Day series…but the reboot made that null’n void

I am trying to decide whether to pick this up or not. I am excited about the new direction and Jurgens coming on board, but not sure if I will get much out of this as it is the last hurrah for a creative team whom I did not read much of.

Just read it. I… don’t know. I’m happy about the new direction. But I feel a little ‘meh’. I think the main thing is that I don’t think I can take much more of the contrived antagonism between Jason and Ronnie. I mean, they went through a unique experience together. I would think that would transcend the little petty high school cliquey thing and would bring them closer together as people. The ‘still at odds with each other’ thing just rings hollow to me. But then, maybe it’s because I miss the unlikely rapport between Ronnie and the Professor.

About the zero issue, I liked it just because it looks like the bridge back to the Firestorm I was hoping we were getting last year. I don’t fault Ethan at all with trying out a new direction, and maybe with some better execution and a little more stability with the creative team it could have worked. But since it obviously wasn’t working out, I give DC credit for not just bailing on the book and giving Jurgens a shot at resurrecting it. I certainly hope he succeeds, I know I am looking forward to his run.

I’m trying to stay optimistic because though the storyline has been dense and without many answers an entire year in, it has been a good read compared to some other titles I’ve picked up. I struggle a bit with the fact that the changes have led to 180 degree turns in storytelling. Fury was brought in at first and seemed to have a big role to play, changes were made in the control booth and Fury seems now to be discarded as some aberrant mutant.
The Firestorm protocols got to be too complicated and international and couldn’t be wrapped up quickly so the new writers decided to start killing off all the Firestorms so that we’re back with a more manageable lot again.
Some consistency in direction would be nice. Maybe now that the boys are back at home and in high school, we’ll get that.

I believe he’s meaning Joe Harris and Yildiray Cinar….next month….Jurgens takes over the series…(but please note…the numbers on this book aren’t great so this series is teetering on cancellation…but note the change in direction starting w/ 0 to improve those numbers)
