I have to admit that I was conflicted by the first issue. The torture/murder scene was a bit unsettling and felt more like something out of the Punisher. The malicious characterization in the scene and the following vile exchange between the villains immediately after seems excessive since these characters can pose no real threat to our hero. It comes across as even more over the top silly when we find their motivations are – corporate interests.

I know I haven’t read the whole story and that Firestorm is no stranger to some of the themes in this issue but as much as I was looking forward to this series I can’t feel good about my favorite character written like this (I’m not talking about situation… I mean the tone). I know Gail Simone and Ethan Van Scver are talented and I wish them all the luck.

Reserving my views on this reboot for now. I will say 2 things: 1) It was a good first issue of a comic and 2) Did we catch a glimpse of the new Killer Frost (her arm, at least)?

Also, Re: The Fires & Water Podcast:
I finally caught up on them (at least the 1st 3). You guys are doing an excellent job on it and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. One thing, though. I’m not sure how I feel yet about having Match Heads team up with the Fishy Followers. Wasn’t pompous “King Arthur” the one who ended the Satellite Era and kicked Firestorm out of the Justice League in that 1984 JLofA Annual #2? I don’t think the 12-year old in me has ever forgiven him for that.

    Keep up the good work!

@Keith and Luke – Thanks for the feedback! Glad you are enjoying the show!

@Keith – You are TOTALLY right about Aquaman being responsible for Firestorm leaving the JLA! I’ll have to mention that to Rob. :)
